A promise was made… Having an American IPA for today’s post.
Last week it was a sour… and I promised that this week it was gonna be an IPA. So I opened the refrigerator and the forst thing to see was this exact beer.
It is named Tetrapod Wavebreaker Amerocan IPA and os brewed by the Metalhead brewery. I know this brewery since the day it launched and I was a bit surprised by the styling and label of this can, because they tend to use different style drawings, mostly using different fictional characters. But this one… it only has a tetrapod that usually breaks ocean waves. But will it break something else?!? My expectations, my heart… my soul? 😄
I don’t remember the time when I last had an American IPA. Maybe it was way too long ago. I remember recently having NEIPAs only… so this will gonna be relatively new taste for me. I remember that my best memories are connected with a West Coast IPA brewed by Stone brewery. But… this one is from Bulgaria, so let’s see what it can pffer.
The color is quite dark for an IPA, I even was worried if it was oxidated, but when checking it in better light I think it is only too dark. I know the boys from Metalhead have a high tech bottling and brewing lines, so oxidation is not plausible at all.
Carbonation is on good, high levels and I can already smell the heavenly aromas of the heavy hopping. Nice citrus vibes are released in the air. And now let’s see how it will feel in mouth.
Initially there is a good amount of freshness, again citrus forward and then comes some solid bitterness. There is something harsh in it though. Some thoughts of oxidation come again, bit there isn’t the characteristic cardboard aftertaste. It can be in my mind only… again. Maybe it is just the darker comor that leads such thoughts in my head.
The beer is truly good, but there is something little bit odd, and I cannot decide what this can be. A good brew, but not perfect.
Head preserves quite well and I reach the end of the can relatively fast, but something makes me conservative and I don’t want another one. There are these beers that you want another one after the first one ends but this is not the case now.
So… this is for today. Maybe next week I will have something better. Just hope not to be worse than this, because it will be too much for me 😁
See you soon, fellows. Have a nice day.
Cheers and bye! 🍻
A month ago I was in Bansko where I had the opportunity to taste the beers of two Bulgarian breweries, Meltum and Artizan.
Those beers were good, I liked them and now I'm in a problem 🙂 I want to drink them again, but I have nowhere to buy them.
I know the guy that runs the Artizan brewery. I used to judge next to him in a home brewer’s competition. He has solid knowledge about brewing and of course has numerous prizes in various competitions. Both breweries that you tried are perfect choices from the Bulgarian craft beer stage.
Cheers!
Drinking beer with someone who owns and produces beer is a fantastic experience.
Just an hour and two or three glasses of beer, while talking about those beers with the one who made it is priceless 🙂
I would often go to his place for a tasting 🙂
