A walk in black and white through the Brincadeira de Bouzas

Something that makes living in this country special is its traditional medieval festivals.

I don't know how many festivals of this style there are in Spain but here in Galicia I have already met three and they all have in common the choripan and period costumes.

Last weekend was celebrated in the neighborhood of Bouzas here in Vigo the Fiesta de La Brincadeira. It is a long awaited celebration for both the inhabitants of Bouzas and Vigo, in this festive day that lasts about three days, there is a typical food market where the most famous is the choripan (bread stuffed with sausage), it is also a great opportunity for artisans to bring their works and crafts for sale.

Then there are the dances, oh, the dances! Those traditional costumes that in color are a marvel, in black and white have another charm. The movements stand out, the glances between the dancers, the rhythm that can be guessed in the spinning skirts. The pipers, with their serious but dedicated demeanor, seem to have stepped out of another era. And in the middle of the crowd, we were trying to follow the steps but I think we will have to take a course for the next party, 🤣 and although we could not keep the rhythm we still enjoyed it.

The Brincadeira is characterized for being a party that mixes tradition, humor, street theater and a touch of satire very local (which we could not understand no matter how much attention we paid). Bouzas is a seaside neighborhood of Vigo with its own soul, so if the party is not your thing, walking through the streets of the neighborhood is very charming, it also has a promenade that walking it is like the breeze is carrying you.

Here at La Brincadeira even the children have their traditional costumes.

I love to enjoy these festivities whenever there is one I try to attend at least one day, I think I will have to buy my typical costume for the next festivity! 😁
