Walk through my favorite square in Old Havana [Eng/Esp]
I want to share my favorite square with you. Today I explored it and enjoyed every detail. This way, I'm participating in the challenge @tattoodjay proposes to share our Wednesday strolls.
I'm talking about Plaza de San Francisco de Asís in Old Havana. It's a very old square dating back to the 17th century, and its history is linked to the birth of the city. Located on the port avenue, it's one of the first squares created for commercial activities.
It owes its name to the Convent of San Francisco de Asís, located on one of its sides. This convent, built by the Franciscans, is in the Baroque style typical of its era, and its 42-meter tower was the tallest in the city for a long time.
I really like its predominant colonial style; it's completely cobbled and surrounded by imposing buildings with more than a century of history. One of them is the Lonja del Comercio (Commerce Exchange), built at the beginning of the 20th century. Others are hotels with a classic, colonial design to respect the architectural harmony of the square.
In the center of the square, the beautiful Fountain of the Lions catches our attention. It was carved from Carrara marble and placed on this site in 1836. Its four lions inspire strength and represent power, and they also provided the precious liquid to all who came to this place.
What I like most and what distinguishes it is the presence of the doves that accompany each visitor. They are accustomed to receiving food from the people who visit the place. That's why this square is known as the Plaza de las Palomas (Pigeon Square).
Something that also attracts the attention of all who visit is the beautiful sculpture "The Conversation" by French artist Etienne Pirot. It was placed in 2012. The most curious thing is that inside its marble base, they placed a box with French and Cuban coins and, in addition, a message for future generations. Impressive!
I really like this sculpture because it displays the bronze pieces well balanced on top of each other, depicting two friends sitting and talking without any electronic devices in between. It suggests the need for face-to-face conversation, a message very appropriate for these times.
And to add more beauty and cultural value to the square, since 2010 it has featured an elegant bronze sculpture of Frédéric Chopin sitting on a park bench on one side of the square. It's a work by the important Polish sculptor Adam Myjak and was donated to Cuba as a symbol of friendship between the two countries.
In addition, we can enjoy a lovely horse-drawn carriage ride, here they wait for us to take a tour of the Historic Center of Havana, do not miss it!
I hope you liked my tour today, I enjoyed it big, because I love to walk through Old Havana.
See you soon!
