Today I'm happy to share something with you that fills my soul. As many of you know, December in Havana has a special aroma, a unique atmosphere that comes with the International Festival of New Latin American Cinema, an event that, for 46 years, has transformed the city into a giant movie theater.

For me, this festival isn't just a cultural event; it's a rendezvous with a very beautiful part of my history. It all began during my university years. I remember those times with nostalgia: leaving the classrooms and, with my classmates, embarking on the adventure of seeing some of the films during the 15 days of the festival. The cinema became an extension of the classroom, but full of emotions and debates that we continued outside.

Then came working life, and as happens to many, time shrinks, responsibilities increase, and luxuries, like dedicating hours to the cinema, diminish. For years, I could only escape for a few weekends, savoring the festival's offerings bit by bit. I was always left with the bittersweet feeling of wanting to see more.

But this year… this year has been different and wonderful! Retirement has been the key to fully reopening this door. I decided that, finally, I would dedicate myself to enjoying the festival as I had always dreamed. And to make it even more special, I joined a group of friends, all with the same passion. We became a very unique "selection committee." With the program and synopses, we would venture to see a film based solely on the intrigue generated by its brief description. We were lucky! We were able to see good stories, well told, which encouraged us to discuss the various themes.

However, what truly characterizes and makes this festival magical is something that goes beyond the screen: it's the warmth of human connection. At the beginning of many screenings, especially the first showings, the cast and director of the film take to the stage. Seeing them there, in the flesh, nervous and excited, presenting their work, is a moment of immediate connection. But the best part comes afterward.

When the screening ends, the experience doesn't end. Everyone—audience members, actors, filmmakers—converges in the cinema lobby. A friendly buzz forms, with people chatting, asking questions, and offering congratulations. And there lies the wonderful opportunity to approach them, talk to them, and express your admiration.

This year I was able to speak with actors whose talent I deeply admire. The emotion of being able to tell them face to face, "Thank you for your art, thank you for this story that moved me," is indescribable. Seeing their eyes light up as they receive the audience's affection is a mutual gift. Taking a photo with them isn't just a selfie; it's the confirmation of a genuine moment of connection.

The festival unfolds across several cinemas in Havana's Vedado district, but there's an epicenter where the cinephile spirit is felt most strongly: the corner of 23rd and 12th streets. There, the film festival expands. There are two cinemas, and as if that weren't enough, they close off 23rd Avenue to set up a giant outdoor screen. Sitting on the street watching a free film, surrounded by hundreds of people who share your interest, is a delightful experience.

And to top it all off, after the evening screenings, that same street transforms into a stage for concerts by renowned Cuban artists. It's the perfect combination: after nourishing your mind and heart with great cinema, the music invites you to stay, to share, to keep feeling.

In short, this festival has been a reunion for me with my inner film buff, with the time to enjoy what I'm passionate about, with my friends, and above all, with the living essence of Latin American cinema: one that speaks to us in our language, that reflects our realities and dreams, and that, most importantly, allows us to connect, even if only for a moment, with the people who make it possible.

Visita y vive La Habana en Festival

¡Hola mis amigos!

Hoy me complace compartir con ustedes algo que me llena el alma. Como muchos sabrán, diciembre en La Habana tiene un aroma especial, un ambiente único que se respira con el Festival Internacional del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano, un evento que, desde hace 46 años, transforma la ciudad en un gran cine.
Para mí, este festival no es solo un evento cultural; es una cita con una parte muy bonita de mi historia. Todo comenzó en mis años de universidad. Recuerdo esas épocas con nostalgia: salir de las aulas y, en grupo con mis compañeros, emprender la aventura de ver alguna de las películas durante los 15 días que duraba el festival. El cine se convertía en una extensión de las aulas, pero llena de emociones y debates que continuábamos en la calle.
Después llegó la vida laboral y como les pasa a muchos, el tiempo se contrae, las responsabilidades aumentan y los lujos, como dedicarle horas al cine, se reducen. Durante años, solo podía escaparme algunos fines de semana, saboreando a cuentagotas las propuestas del festival. Siempre me quedaba con la sensación dulce-amarga de querer ver más.
Pero este año… ¡este año ha sido diferente y maravilloso! La jubilación, ha sido la llave para abrir esta puerta de nuevo por completo. Decidí que, por fin, me dedicaría a disfrutar el festival como siempre soñé. Y para hacerlo aún más especial, me uní a un grupo de amigas, todas con la misma pasión. Nos convertimos en un "comité de selección" muy particular. Con la cartelera y las sinopsis nos aventurábamos a ver una película solo por la intriga que generaba su breve descripción. ¡tuvimos suerte! Pudimos ver buenas historias bien contadas, que nos animaba a debatir los diversos temas.
Sin embargo, lo que realmente caracteriza y hace mágico a este festival es algo que va más allá de la pantalla: es la calidez del contacto humano. Al inicio de muchas funciones, especialmente las primeras presentaciones, se sube al escenario el elenco y el director de la película. Verlos allí, de carne y hueso, nerviosos y emocionados, presentando su obra, es un momento de una conexión inmediata. Pero lo mejor viene después.
Al terminar la función, la experiencia no se acaba. Todo el mundo: espectadores, actores, realizadores, confluye en el vestíbulo del cine. Se forma un bullicio amable, de gente comentando, preguntando, felicitando. Y ahí está la oportunidad maravillosa de acercarte, conversar, expresarles tu admiración. Este año pude hablar con actores a los que admiro profundamente por su talento. Es indescriptible la emoción de poder decirles cara a cara: "Gracias por su arte, gracias por esta historia que me conmovió". Ver cómo les brillan los ojos al recibir el cariño del público es un regalo mutuo. Tomarse una foto con ellos no es un mero selfie; es la constatación de un momento de genuino encuentro.
El festival se despliega por varios cines del Vedado habanero, pero hay un epicentro, donde el espíritu cinéfilo se siente con más fuerza: la esquina de 23 y 12. Allí, la cinemateca se multiplica. Hay dos salas de cine y, como si fuera poco, cierran la avenida 23 para instalar una pantalla gigante al aire libre. Sentarte en la calle a ver una película gratuita, rodeado de cientos de personas que comparten tu interés, es una grata experiencia. Y para cerrar con broche de oro, al finalizar las proyecciones nocturnas, esa misma calle se convierte en un escenario para conciertos de artistas cubanos reconocidos. Es la combinación perfecta: después de alimentar la mente y el corazón con buen cine, la música te invita a quedarte, a compartir, a seguir sintiendo.
En resumen, este festival ha sido para mí un rencuentro con mi yo más cinéfilo, con el tiempo para disfrutar lo que me apasiona, con mis amigas, y sobre todo, con la esencia viva del cine latinoamericano: una que nos habla en nuestro idioma, que refleja nuestras realidades y sueños, y que, más importante aún, nos permite acercarnos, aunque sea por un instante, a las personas que la hacen posible.
