Tour of the halls of the Capitol Building in Havana [eng/esp]

Hello friends, as promised, today I want to share with you the tour of different rooms of the National Capitol of Cuba, as a continuation of the post about the Hall of Lost Steps. During the tour, we were guided by a specialist who explained all the details of its design and history; so, I will share with you all the knowledge acquired on this visit.

I will begin by showing you the Hemicycle, the former Chamber of Representatives. It was built in the shape of a semicircle, inspired by the theaters of ancient Rome, to improve acoustics; the downward slope allows for better visibility for those sitting farther from the presiding officer.

The door we see behind the presiding officer is the one that connects to the office of the Speaker of the House, now called the Bolívar Room. The Speaker of the House was the only one permitted access through this door. The flag displayed there was the first flag of Cuba.

The president of the chamber sat in the presidential box along with the 6 representatives of the 6 provinces that existed at that time.

There are two balconies on either side that were intended for the President of the Republic when he wished to attend sessions, but he did not have the right to speak. The upper gallery was for the public and the press.

Something that surprised me is the absence of lamps and chandeliers to illuminate the hall. It was said that laws should be written under natural sunlight. Here, the light filters through the polychrome stained glass; hence the absence of artificial lamps. The intensity of the sun is so strong that it keeps it well-lit all day.

Now I'll show you the Bolívar Room, the office of the Speaker of the House of Representatives. It has the original furniture; it's a French-style room from the Napoleonic era. There are Greco-Roman elements laminated in gold on the walls and ceiling. The two mirrors were made in Venice and depict Medusa from Greek mythology.

With beautiful furniture, tables of Cuban red mahogany, black marble, and bronze covered with a layer of gold. Here we can appreciate an original antique telephone, very beautiful and well preserved.

The next, Baire Room, is the protocol and lounge of the Representatives. Here they met to socialize, always with coffee. The furniture is made of red mahogany. The curtains and upholstery are a deep red.

We can distinguish different types of marble throughout the room: green, pink, red, and yellow. Its large windows allow plenty of light and ventilation. The ceiling is Rococo style with beautiful bronze chandeliers.

What a pleasant surprise to find a room where the tableware and cutlery used in the Presidential Palace are on display: the Yara Room. All the tableware is porcelain decorated with gold and has the coat of arms of the Republic of Cuba engraved on each piece. The glasses are Baccarat crystal and the cutlery is silver. Notice the ceiling decoration; it's different and very beautiful in each room.

We arrived at a large room called the José Martí Room, where there is a marble bust of the national hero and a library decorated with the muses of knowledge on the walls and ceiling.

The library is decorated in the Italian Renaissance style. The furniture is made entirely of precious wood. What caught my attention the most was its ceiling, which has a large stained-glass window in the center to allow sunlight to enter, and it also has very beautiful bronze lamps.

As we walked along the wide hallway, we came across the striking and elegant staircase. The elevator has a wooden interior and is covered in bronze.

The main characteristic of this Capitol building, unlike others around the world, is the presence of interior courtyards. These were incorporated in the colonial style to allow air and sunlight to enter the interior.

In one of its interior courtyards stands a statue of the Rebel Angel, unique in the world, representing Lucifer's rebellion. It is depicted in a defiant and arrogant pose. It is a work by the Italian sculptor Salvatore Buemi.

Recorrido por los salones del Capitolio de la Habana

Hola amigos, como lo prometido es deuda, hoy quiero compartir con ustedes el recorrido por diferentes salones del Capitolio Nacional de Cuba, como continuidad al post sobre el Salón de los Pasos Perdidos. Durante el recorrido fuimos guiados por un especialista que nos explicaba todos los detalles de su diseño y su historia; así pues, les compartiré todos los conocimientos adquiridos en esta visita.
Comenzaré mostrándoles el Hemiciclo, antigua cámara de representantes. Se construyó en forma de semicírculo, inspirado en los teatros de la antigua Roma, para favorecer la acústica; la inclinación hacia abajo permite mayor visibilidad de los que se sientan más alejados de la presidencia.
La puerta que vemos detrás de la presidencia es la que comunica con la oficina del presidente de la cámara, ahora se llama Salón Bolívar. El presidente de la cámara era el único que tenía el acceso permitido a través de esta puerta. La bandera que está colocada fue la primera bandera que tuvo Cuba.
En la tribuna presidencial se sentaban el presidente de la cámara junto a los 6 representantes de las 6 provincias existentes en esa época. Hay dos balcones a los lados que estaban destinados para el presidente de la República, cuando quería asistir en las sesiones, pero no tenía derecho a hablar. La galería superior era para el público y la prensa.
Algo que me sorprendió es la ausencia de lámparas y candelabros para iluminar el salón. Según se decía: las leyes deben ser escritas bajo la luz natural del sol. Aquí la luz se filtra a través de los cristales policromados; por eso la ausencia de lámparas artificiales, la intensidad del sol es tan fuerte que lo mantiene bien iluminado todo el día.
Ahora les muestro el Salón Bolívar, oficina del presidente de la Cámara de representantes. Tiene el mobiliario original, es un ambiente francés de la época de Napoleón, hay elementos grecorromanos laminados en oro en las paredes y techo. Los dos espejos fueron hechos en Venecia y tienen una representación de las medusas de la mitología griega.
Con bella mueblería, mesas de caoba roja cubana, mármol negro y bronce cubierto de una capa de oro. Aquí podemos apreciar un teléfono original antiguo, muy hermoso y bien conservado.
El siguiente Salón Baire es el salón de protocolo y descanso de la Cámara de Representantes. Aquí se reunían para socializar, siempre con café. La mueblería es hecha con madera de caoba roja. Las cortinas y el tapizado de los muebles son de un color rojo intenso. Podemos distinguir por todo el salón los diferentes tipos de mármol: verde, rosa, rojo y amarillo. Por sus grandes ventanales entra mucha claridad y ventilación. El techo es de estilo Rococó con hermosos candelabros de bronce.
Que grata sorpresa encontrar un salón donde están expuestas la vajilla y cubertería que se utilizaba en el Palacio presidencial, es el Salón Yara. Toda la vajilla es de porcelana decorada con oro y tiene grabado el escudo de la República de Cuba en cada pieza. Las copas son de cristal de bacarat y la Cubertería es de plata. Observen la decoración del techo, en cada salón es diferente y muy hermoso.
Llegamos a un gran salón llamado Salón José Martí, donde se haya un busto de mármol del prócer y una biblioteca decorada con las musas del conocimiento en las paredes y el techo. La biblioteca es decorada con estilo renacentista italiano. El mobiliario es completamente de madera preciosa. Lo que más me llamó la atención es su techo, que en la parte central tiene un gran vitral para permitir la entrada de la luz solar, además tiene las lámparas de bronce muy bonitas.
Mientras caminamos por el amplio pasillo nos encontramos con las escaleras bien vistosas y elegantes. El ascensor es de madera en su interior y cubierto de bronce.
La principal característica de este Capitolio a diferencia de los restantes del mundo es la presencia de patios interiores, que se incorporaron siguiendo el estilo colonial para permitir la entrada de aire y la luz solar a su interior.
En uno de sus patios interiores hay una estatua del Ángel Rebelde, única en el mundo, que representa la rebelión de Lucifer, se muestra en actitud desafiante y prepotente. Es una obra del escultor italiano Salvatore Buemi.
