Toasting with Cold Chocolate for the Love of Havana [eng/esp]

PORTADA.jpg

Hello dear friends, today I'm joining our friend @tattoodjay's challenge to share my walks with a group of friends through the streets of Old Havana and the enjoyment of a delicious cold chocolate.

It all began with the wonderful Routes and Walks Program of the City Historian's Office. Do you know it? For those who aren't from Havana or haven't been fortunate enough to participate, let me tell you that it's one of those gems bequeathed to us by the immense Eusebio Leal. Although he's no longer physically with us, his wanderlust and his love for this city are felt in every corner this project touches.

During the months of July and August, Havana becomes a giant classroom, an open book where we, children and adults alike, are the curious students.

During these morning walks, through architectural routes, stories of entrepreneurs, visits to fortresses, and art galleries, our group of friends was forged.

We share a love of discovering the secrets of our city, of listening to the anecdotes that lie dormant in centuries-old stones. Thus, Havana wove friendship with its magic.

Today, after an intense day of walking, learning, and laughing under the Havana sun, we wanted to do something special to close out this season with a flourish.

What better plan than to celebrate with what we love most: chocolate. And where better than at the Chocolate Museum! Located in the heart of Old Havana, at the intersection of Mercaderes and Amargura streets, a place that exudes an aroma that can make anyone fall in love.

Upon entering, the intense, sweet smell of freshly made cacao is a welcome embrace. The place has a contagious energy. We sat down and placed our order.

While we waited, I admired the display cases of beautiful porcelain cups and learned a little more about the cocoa process through the posters posted on the walls.

Soon after, they brought us chocolates and a cold chocolate drink, undoubtedly a lifeline from the Havana heat. Each sip was a relief and a pleasure at the same time. And to wash it down, some sweets complemented it perfectly.

While we savored these delicacies, we chatted animatedly and planned to repeat this wonderful experience next year.

That snack at the Casa del Chocolate was more than just sweets and cocoa. It was the celebration of a friendship forged on the street, among stories and stones. It was our small tribute to ourselves, as curious explorers, and to Eusebio's legacy that invites us to never stop walking, learning, and savoring Havana, in all its delicious forms.

See you soon!

Stopping to read the cocoa process posters and admire those porcelain cups sounds like the perfect calm before that cold chocolate rescue. I love how a spot can teach and treat at the same time. Next time I’m in Old Havana, I’m heading straight to Mercaderes with Amargura and ordering the cold one first, no heroics in that heat. Any must-try flavor or pastry there you’d pick again?

Sold, cold chocolate with chocolates it is. Any must-try bonbon there, maybe dark with rum or orange, or a simple truffle. Thanks for the invite, Casa del Chocolate is now on my Old Havana list.
