Saint Catherine of Siena Church in Havana [eng/esp]

Hello my friends who love our Wednesday walks! Today I'm joining our friend @tattoodjay's challenge once again to share the discovery of a place full of peace and beauty amidst the hustle and bustle of Havana: the imposing Saint Catherine of Siena Church.
As I strolled along the beautiful Paseo Avenue in the heart of Vedado, I enjoyed the shade of the trees lining the central median.
From afar, a grand building at the intersection with 25th Street caught my eye, inviting me to approach and admire every detail of its architecture, which I enjoyed while taking photos. My curiosity, as always, led me to decide to explore its interior.

This church is dedicated to Catherine Benincasa, born in Siena in 1347. She was a woman of her time who dedicated her entire life to service, helping the poor and caring for the sick.
This place has a rich history. Its construction dates back to 1917, and it's fascinating to see how the styles blend together here. Gothic predominates, with its aspiration to reach for the heavens, but the modernism of Havana's architecture of the time is also evident.
The two domed towers are its unmistakable hallmark from the outside, a unique mix. I was struck by the fact that it doesn't have a traditional bell tower; its voice must be different, more internal.
Upon crossing the threshold, I was greeted by a respectful silence. My gaze went directly forward, to the altar of Saint Catherine. It is simple, yet of great beauty.
The natural light that enters through the tall windows is a gift of nature, tropical light, so abundant on our island.

As I walked through the side aisles, I discovered other marble altars, each dedicated to a specific devotion. And I can't fail to mention the beautiful stained-glass windows and the exquisite arched ceilings.
I wanted to explore further. On one side, a half-open door offered me a glimpse of the convent's inner courtyard. A large garden, a tranquil green oasis. I would have loved to sit there for a while.

I left the Church of Saint Catherine of Siena with a renewed spirit. It was an unexpected visit that turned into a gift wrapped in history and faith.
See you soon!
