Mariners' Park: A Connection to History Between the Sea, Gardens, and Monuments [eng/esp]

PORTADA.jpg

Hello, fellow travel lovers!
This morning I decided to indulge in one of my favorite routines: a walk along Avenida del Puerto, specifically around the Castillo de la Fuerza, one of the fortresses that guard our bay.

I enjoyed the always impressive view of Havana Bay, with the Castillo del Morro standing watch in front of me and the Castillo de la Fuerza at my side, with its beautiful gardens and its colossal centuries-old stone structure.

Right at the intersection of Avenida del Puerto and O'Reilly Street, while I was delighting in such beauty, I came across Mariners' Park. Although I had seen it before, today it invited me to stop and observe it with real attention.

I looked around it carefully and suddenly my gaze fell on an impressive monument: a three-meter-high obelisk erected in memory of the Cuban sailors who died during World War II.
The monument is surrounded by an iron fence and a garden with ornamental plants.

I stood there in front of it, deeply curious to know the history it held. Why a monument to Cuban sailors during a world war? What was their story? At that moment, my curiosity led me to carefully read the plaque and search the internet, thanks to this tool for knowledge.

Despite its simplicity, the monument never ceases to impress. It is a stone obelisk with a bronze sculpture depicting a sailor steering a ship, with the bodies of two young men lying lifeless at his feet in the raging waves.

On the back of the obelisk is a bronze figure with a sad, feminine face. I think it represents the motherland with a pair of wings to protect them in eternity.

The inscription reads the names of the 77 sailors who died at different times between 1942 and 1944, when their ships were sunk by submarines during World War II.

I began to think that these men died protecting the waters of the Caribbean. Therefore, reading each name, one by one, is a silent and powerful exercise, an act of remembrance, gratitude, and respect.

I confess that it moved me deeply. In our daily lives, surrounded by worries and chores, it is easy to overlook these reminders of history. But today, this monument spoke to me.

An obelisk always draws attention because of its symbolism: it is a stone planted in the present so as not to forget the past. This is not just a piece of stone; it is a guardian of memory. A place that forces us to reflect on the true cost of the peace and freedom we enjoy today.

I continued my walk around the fortress, but with a different perspective. I was no longer just seeing the beautiful view of the bay and the gardens that surrounded me; I felt I knew a little more about the history this wonderful city holds.
