Lovers' Park, a garden born from the shadows [ENG/ESP]

ENGLISH VERSION

Hello my friends, today I'm pleased to share with you a place that was redesigned to fulfill a completely different public purpose, but without ceasing to tell the sad story that preceded it.

I invite you to tour the Lovers' Park, officially called as the Martyrs' Park. It's a beautiful park located at the entrance to Promenade of Prado and across from Castillo de la Punta on Havana Bay.

As I was walking through the park, a small building surrounded by iron bars caught my attention. As I got closer, I saw that it was a monument that housed the chapel of the old Havana prison, built in 1839.

Yes, friends, this was the site of the Royal Prison of Havana, the largest prison in the colonial era, where executions and cruel mistreatment took place.

I'll show you old photos where we can see the vast dimensions of the prison, of which only this small fragment remains.

In the 1931 photos, we see the streetlights, marble benches, and lions of Promenade of Prado, which are currently in the same place. We can see that the space formerly occupied by the prison is now Lovers' Park, although it is also called Prison Park for this reason.

Upon entering the chapel, we see signs explaining the details of the prison, and we can see the remains of the painting on the chapel's ceiling, which was restored by the muralist Domingo Ravenet.

Behind the chapel are two cells. We can see how cramped and lacking in comfort they were. Our great José Martí was imprisoned in one of these cells when he was only 16 years old. He was already considered a major enemy of the colony, and suffered cruel mistreatment there.

Numerous political figures were also imprisoned and sentenced to death. The worst crime was committed in 1871 when eight medical students were shot, innocent of the charges against them. In a corner of the park, a fragment of the firing squad remains, forming part of the beautiful monument erected in their honor.

A century later, in 1941, the prison was almost entirely demolished due to structural problems, but this small fragment of the chapel was left to tell its story. And from that moment on, a park was planned to honour the memory of so many Cubans who fought for independence from the colony and also those innocents who were executed.

It has large trees and benches scattered under their shade. There's a central fountain with a limestone sculpture by Cuban artist Rita Longa, created in 1947, composed of three human figures emerging from the water. The female figure could represent the homeland, with a somber face, embraced by men who also convey sadness.

There's another beautiful stone sculpture by the great sculptor Jilma Madera. We owe the great Christ of Havana to her. This sculpture represents a native aboriginal couple. This sculpture also conveys sadness and pain to me.

This, a place that once meant pain and death, has been transformed into a beautiful park filled with inviting vegetation where we can enjoy peace while gazing at the vast sea with its usual brilliant blue, listening to the sound of songbirds, and contemplating the sculptures and monuments that remind us of its sad past, while also feeling the happiness of living in a different present.

See you soon!

The place is a perfect blend of history and beauty. The transformation from a prison site marked by suffering to a peaceful park honoring the memory of those who fought for freedom is truly powerful.
