Holy Spirit Parish: the oldest in Havana [eng/esp]
Hello, my fellow travelers!
Today I want to share with you an experience that blends history, spirituality, and that unique magic that only Old Havana can offer. A few days ago, I decided to walk the streets of Old Havana's historic center, one of those places where time seems to have stopped amidst cobblestones, colonial facades, and centuries-old stories.
As I walked among colorful buildings, I let myself be carried away by its vibrant atmosphere: street vendors and locals shopping and strolling peacefully down the street.
As I reached the intersection with Acosta Street, I came across a parish church, its simplicity and elegance stood out. It is the Parish Church of the Holy Spirit, the oldest functioning church in Havana, built in 1640 at the request of Bishop Jerónimo Valdés. The bell tower was once the second highest point in Havana.
Its simple façade doesn't say much from the outside, but as I walked through the doors, I was amazed by the beauty of its interior.
The church is an example of a blend of styles: from Arabic influences to Gothic and Neoclassical. Upon entering, the first thing I noticed was the simplicity of its single nave with side chapels. The wooden ceiling decorated with geometric shapes is very well preserved.
The main altar dedicated to the Holy Spirit is covered by a ribbed vault made in the style of the early decades of the 18th century.
I love its large, beautifully colored stained-glass windows that lend a natural clarity to the entire church. At the top of the nave, we can see the organ—how I wish I could hear it! The organ music is truly beautiful.
I've been researching its history, and it's fascinating. It began as a humble hermitage in 1638, thanks to the devotion of freed Black and mulatto slaves to the Holy Spirit, and later became a parish in 1661.
During the colonial era, it served as a refuge for those fleeing justice, thanks to the right to serve as asylum in 1773. Imagine the stories that must have lived within these walls!
Another curious fact I found is related to the surname Valdés in our country. The bishop I mentioned earlier founded a charity house in 1695, and all those sheltered under its roof were given the surname Valdés.
This small church has another treasure: its funerary crypts, an underground space where the remains of Cuban priests are still preserved. Bishop Valdés's tomb was discovered here in 1936. I would have liked to see the crypts, but the public was not allowed to enter.
Sitting on one of the wooden benches, I breathed in the scent of old wood as the light softly streamed through the stained-glass windows. I thought about how this place has witnessed baptisms, masses, and refuges for centuries. It's a peaceful space amidst the bustle of Havana.
If you visit Havana, don't miss this place. The Church of the Holy Spirit is more than a monument; it's a living piece of history. Afterward, you can walk down Cuba Street to reach Cathedral Square or enjoy a coffee in a nearby patio.
See you soon!
