El parque El Carmelo nos revela su historia.

Estimados amigos, hoy quiero hablarles sobre un parque que suelo visitar con frecuencia, aunque siempre paso de prisa, disfruto de su paisaje y sus obras.
El parque El Carmelo está situado en las calles 14, 15, 16 y 17 del barrio El Carmelo, conocido como El Vedado habanero. Aquí podemos disfrutar de abundante sombra que nos proporciona la naturaleza a través de árboles centenarios que poseen vistosas raíces adventicias, esas que vienen desde las ramas y se anclan al suelo para afianzarse fuertemente a la tierra y seguir engrosando su tronco para resistir cientos de años más, es un espectáculo digno de admirar. Además, corre una brisa fresca que viene del mar que está a pocos metros de ahí.

Carmelo Park reveals its history.

Dear friends, today I want to tell you about a park that I often visit, although I always pass by in a hurry, but I always enjoy its landscape and its works.
El Carmelo Park is located on 14th, 15th, 15th, 16th and 17th streets in El Carmelo neighborhood and is known as El Vedado in Havana. Here we can enjoy the abundant shade provided by nature through centenary trees that have showy adventitious roots, those that come from the branches and anchor themselves to the ground to hold strongly to the earth and continue thickening their trunk to resist hundreds of years more, it is a spectacle worth admiring. In addition, there is a fresh breeze coming from the sea, which is just a few meters away.

En 1953 se nombró este parque como Parque del Padre Reginaldo en honor al fraile dominico español Reginaldo Sánchez Pastor y Herrera (1889-1952) quien vivió en Cuba desde 1907 y participó en la construcción de la iglesia de estilo gótico que se encuentra justo al frente por la calle 16. Los vecinos del lugar desearon que le dedicaran al fraile este parque construyendo un monumento en su honor. En 1953 fue inaugurado y el rostro del fraile Reginaldo queda en posición mirando a su iglesia.

In 1953 this park was named as Father Reginaldo Park in honor of the Spanish Dominican friar Reginaldo Sánchez Pastor y Herrera (1889-1952) who lived in Cuba since 1907 and participated in the construction of the gothic style church that is located just across 16th Street. The neighbors of the place wished to dedicate this park to the friar by building a monument in his honor. In 1953 it was inaugurated and the face of Friar Reginaldo was placed facing his church.

En el año 2009, se decide colocar también un monumento dedicado al pintor cubano Wilfredo Lam (1902-1982). Su escultor Alberto Lescay realizó esta obra en bronce de 7 m por 6 m de ancho y la denominó Vuelo Lam. Simula un gran pájaro con figura humana y una de sus alas está tocando la tierra. En el suelo se encuentra la tarja de su descripción donde se puede leer una frase de Lam “el pájaro que me ha hecho y me ha animado y que soy yo mismo que corre detrás de algo a encontrar” en la cual se inspiró el autor para realizar la obra. En la tarja se puede ver todo lo relacionado con la obra, nos dice además que la obra fue realizada gracias a la contribución de su autor y de 63 artistas de la plástica.

In 2009, it was also decided to place a monument dedicated to the Cuban painter Wilfredo Lam (1902-1982). His sculptor Alberto Lescay made this work in bronze of 7 m by 6 m wide and called it Vuelo Lam (Lam Flight). It simulates a large bird with a human figure and one of its wings is touching the ground. On the floor there is the tray of his description where you can read a phrase of Lam "the bird that has made me and has encouraged me and that I am myself who runs after something to find" in which the author was inspired to make the work. On the plaque you can see everything related to the work, it also tells us that the work was made thanks to the contribution of its author and 63 artists of the plastic arts.

Es una obra muy hermosa que al observarla me transmite la fortaleza de su carácter ligada con su amor por la libertad para buscar y realizar sus sueños, que me inspiran por sus alas poderosas, una de ellas anclada en la tierra, porque fue su deseo de que al morir en otras tierras lejanas su cuerpo regresara a la tierra que lo vio nacer. Esta es una interpretación muy personal. Algo que me llamo la atención es que esta obra está situada en el mismo centro del parque y quedó interrumpiendo la vista del padre Reginaldo a su iglesia. Me resultó curioso que dos obras muy diferentes estuvieran tan cerca, creo que estéticamente no se ve bien el conjunto. Al colocar El Vuelo Lam queda minimizado el anterior monumento y comienzan a llamar a este lugar como Parque Lam.

It is a very beautiful work that when observing it transmits me the strength of his character linked with his love for freedom to seek and realize his dreams, which inspire me by his powerful wings, one of them anchored in the earth, because it was his desire that when he died in other distant lands his body would return to the land where he was born. This is a very personal interpretation. Something that caught my attention is that this work is located in the very center of the park and was interrupting the view of Father Reginaldo's church. I found it curious that two very different works were so close, I think that aesthetically it does not look good as a whole. By placing El Vuelo Lam the previous monument is minimized and they begin to call this place as Lam Park.

Les confieso que lo que me incitó a escribir sobre este parque fue la presencia del Vuelo Lam porque es de una poderosa belleza, además que está dedicada al más universal de los pintores cubanos. Pero al tropezarme con la escultura del Padre Reginaldo, me dio curiosidad y me puse a investigar en la historia que acabo de compartirles.

Mi opinión muy personal es que debieron buscar otro sitio para colocar El Vuelo Lam, donde solo estuviera él, incluso se le pueden añadir otras obras en su honor. Nuestro pintor Wilfredo Lam merece un sitio amplio dedicado solamente para honrar su memoria.
De esta forma se respetaría la concepción del monumento donde el padre visualiza la iglesia que ayudó a construir con todo su amor a pesar de no ser cubano.

Es mi deseo que les haya gustado conocer las historia de este parque, aunque su diseño conceptual podria ser mejor, disfrutamos de la belleza del mismo y de sus monumentos.

I confess that what prompted me to write about this park was the presence of the Lam Flight because it is of a powerful beauty, besides it is dedicated to the most universal of Cuban painters. But when I stumbled upon the sculpture of Father Reginaldo, I got curious and began to investigate the story I have just shared with you.

My very personal opinion is that they should have looked for another place to place El Vuelo Lam, where only he would be, even other works in his honor can be added. Our painter Wilfredo Lam deserves a large site dedicated only to honor his memory.
This would respect the conception of the monument where the father visualizes the church he helped build with all his love even though he was not Cuban.

I hope you enjoyed learning about the history of this park, although its conceptual design could be better, we enjoyed the beauty of the park and its monuments.

Ese parque es bastante bonito , hay dos cosas que me encantan , la abuelos haciendo ejercicios por la mañana y la iglesia, que curiosamente solo es la parte de alante , por detrás está destruida pero el frente es majestuoso.

Me encantó el artículo, sobretodo porque muchas veces me he sentado ahí para descansar de mis clases en el policlínico de 15 y 18

That park is very beautiful, there are two things that I love, the grandparents doing exercises in the morning and the church, which curiously is only the front part, behind it is destroyed but the front is majestic. I loved the article, especially because many times I have sat there to rest from my classes at the polyclinic of 15 and 18.
