Art and Emotions: Nelson Domínguez Gallery [eng/esp]

Hello, friends, once again I'm joining our friend @tattoodjay's challenge to share a very special visit I made during one of my walks through the cobblestone streets of Old Havana. I'm fascinated by contemplating the restored streets, facades, and squares, all their new splendor.

I decided to visit a place that, although I'd passed by countless times, I'd never stopped to explore. It's easy to miss, just imagine! It's located right in front of the imposing Minor Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi, a place that captures all eyes. But this time was different. I was determined to enter the Nelson Domínguez Gallery, on Oficios Street.

It was a very good decision. From the moment I crossed the threshold of the main hall, I was enveloped in a feeling of harmony and profound beauty. There was a collection of works by one of the most important Cuban painters of all time, an artist who continues to create and delight us with his art. Nelson Domínguez welcomed us into his space with magnificent works that tell their own story.

A group of visitors were waiting for the guided tour to begin, and we were extremely fortunate to have the gallery's leading specialist, who is also a painter and curator, accompany us. It wasn't just a talk; it was a luxury. With professionalism and great passion, he began to explain each work to us, unraveling not only the technique but also the soul behind each piece.

Nelson Domínguez's work is characterized by a very strong expressionism, a style that allows him to connect fully with profound yet earthly themes: popular religiosity, costumbrismo, eroticism, sensuality, and a touch of mysticism that makes you remain thoughtful in front of the canvas.

Domínguez is the National Prize Winner for Fine Arts (2009), and the guide shared a beautiful anecdote that captures the affection he feels. Days before the awards ceremony, a group of artist friends visited his studio and cunningly "stole" his work apron, stained with paint and a testament to his creative work. Later, Nelson searched everywhere for it without success. At the ceremony, when he was called up on stage, his surprise was immense: there it was, framed with the letters announcing his award, his beloved and long-awaited apron. He was moved to tears. It was the greatest recognition an artist can receive.

The gallery is diverse. There are paintings and wooden sculptures that interact with each other. Of the paintings, one series particularly moved me: the Exoduses. Through the figure of dogs, Domínguez heartbreakingly represents mass flight, the desperate search for a way out, for a future. It's a symbolic way of representing migration and hope, which is now a universal practice.

But if anything amazed me, it was his work with wood. The artist demonstrates, without a doubt, that genius lies in seeing beyond the obvious. Through an everyday object like the clothespin, he saw the silhouette of a man and a woman embracing in the same piece. From that simple idea, he created a highly ingenious collection: candlesticks, benches, chairs, windmills. It's proof that a true artist finds poetry in a simple object that is visible to everyone.

Among these works, a peculiar and beautiful chair stands out. Its legs and tall, slender backrest are shaped like ballet slippers, creating the silhouette of a ballerina on pointe. It's a tribute to Cuban ballet. The guide told us that this piece is now a historical gem because the only person to have ever sat in that chair was our great Alicia Alonso.

The gallery also has a corner dedicated to our National Hero, José Martí. There, among moving paintings, is a wooden sculpture in the shape of a horse's head. The story of this piece is magical. Nelson Domínguez himself found it on the seashore, near his home in Cojímar. The wood, worn by water and wind, already had that shape. His artist's eye recognized it, prepared it, and presented it for an exhibition dedicated to Martí, who died riding for Cuba's freedom. Only he could recognize this gift from the sea—what a moving story!

Another sculpture, also created from found tree trunks, pays tribute to Brindis de Salas, a prodigious 19th-century Cuban violinist known as "the black Paganini."

Suddenly, I turn around and find myself facing an imposing work dedicated to Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, the nun who rebelled against her time through writing. The strategically placed apple symbolizes the sin of forbidden knowledge, while a strong and powerful cross projects the nun's face onto the base. It's a piece full of symbolism and strength.

I left the Nelson Domínguez Gallery with renewed energy after connecting with something authentic and powerful. These works reflect our history, our passions, our searches, and our tributes, all transformed into art.

If you walk through Oficios, don't just be dazzled by the Basilica; visit this gallery. It's a wonderful experience, a glimpse into the soul of a genius who sees beauty where we all look, but don't always see.

Arte y sentimientos: Galería de Nelson Domínguez

Hola, amigos, una vez más me uno al reto de nuestro amigo @tattoodjay para compartirles una visita muy especial que realicé durante uno de mis paseos por las calles adoquinadas de La Habana Vieja. Me fascina contemplar las calles, las fachadas y las plazas restauradas luciendo un nuevo esplendor.

Decidí visitar un lugar que, aunque había pasado frente a él incontables veces, nunca me había detenido a explorar. Es fácil que pase desapercibido, ¡imagínense! Se encuentra justo frente a la imponente Basílica Menor de San Francisco de Asís, un lugar que acapara todas las miradas. Pero esta vez era distinto, iba con la decisión de entrar a la Galería de Nelson Domínguez, en la calle Oficios.

Fue muy acertada mi decisión. Desde el momento en que crucé el umbral de la sala principal, me envolvió una sensación de armonía y belleza profunda. Allí estaba un conjunto de obras de uno de los pintores cubanos más importantes de todos los tiempos, un artista que sigue creando y deleitándonos con su arte. Nelson Domínguez nos recibe en su espacio con magnificas obras que cuentan su propia historia.

Un grupo de visitantes esperábamos el inicio de la visita guiada, y tuvimos la enorme suerte de que fuera el principal especialista de la galería, quien también es pintor y curador, el que nos acompañara. No fue una simple charla; fue un lujo. Con profesionalidad y gran pasión comenzó a explicarnos cada obra, desentrañando no solo la técnica sino el alma detrás de cada pieza.

La obra de Nelson Domínguez se caracteriza por un expresionismo muy fuerte, un estilo que le permite conectar de lleno con temas profundos y terrenales a la vez: la religiosidad popular, el costumbrismo, el erotismo, la sensualidad y un toque de misticismo que te hace quedarte pensativo frente al lienzo.

Domínguez es Premio Nacional de Artes Plásticas (2009), y el guía nos compartió una anécdota preciosa que define el cariño que se le profesa. Días antes de la premiación, un grupo de artistas amigos lo visitaron en su estudio y, con astucia, le “sustrajeron” el delantal de trabajo, manchado de pintura testigo de su trabajo creativo. Más tarde, Nelson lo buscó por todos lados sin éxito. Ya en la ceremonia, al ser llamado al escenario, su sorpresa fue inmensa: allí estaba, enmarcado con las letras que anunciaban su premio, su querido y añorado delantal. Se emocionó hasta las lágrimas. Fue el mejor reconocimiento que puede tener un artista.

La galería es diversa. Hay pinturas y esculturas en madera que dialogan entre sí. De las pinturas, una serie me conmovió especialmente: los Éxodos. A través de la figura de perros, Domínguez representa de una manera desgarradora la fuga masiva, la búsqueda desesperada de una salida, de un futuro. Es una manera simbólica de representar la migración y la esperanza, que es ya una práctica universal.

Pero si algo me dejó asombrada fue su trabajo con la madera. El artista demuestra, sin lugar a dudas, que la genialidad reside en ver más allá de lo obvio. A través de un objeto cotidiano como es la pinza de tender ropa vio la silueta de un hombre y una mujer abrazados en una misma pieza. A partir de esa simple idea, creó una colección ingeniosísima: candeleros, bancos, sillas, molinos de viento. Es la prueba de que el verdadero artista encuentra la poesía en un simple objeto que está a la vista de todos.

Entre estas obras, destaca una silla peculiar y bellísima. Sus patas y su espaldar alto y esbelto tienen la forma de zapatillas de ballet, creando en conjunto la silueta de una bailarina en puntas. Es un homenaje al ballet cubano. El guía nos comentó que ahora esta pieza es una joya histórica porque la única persona que se ha sentado alguna vez en esa silla fue nuestra gran Alicia Alonso.

La galería también tiene un rincón dedicado a nuestro Héroe Nacional, José Martí. Allí, entre pinturas conmovedoras, hay una escultura de madera con forma de cabeza de caballo. La historia de esta pieza es mágica. El propio Nelson Domínguez la encontró en la orilla del mar, cerca de su casa en Cojímar. La madera, gastada por el agua y el viento, ya tenía esa forma. Su ojo de artista la reconoció, la preparó y la presentó para una exposición dedicada a Martí, quien murió cabalgando por la libertad de Cuba. Solo él pudo reconocer este obsequio del mar, ¡qué historia tan emocionante!

Otra escultura, también creada a partir de trozos de árboles encontrados, rinde homenaje a Brindis de Salas, violinista cubano prodigioso del siglo XIX conocido como “el Paganini negro”.

De pronto, doy la vuelta y me encuentro con una imponente obra dedicada a Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, la monja que se rebeló contra su tiempo a través de la escritura. La manzana, colocada estratégicamente, simboliza el pecado del conocimiento prohibido, mientras una cruz, fuerte y poderosa, proyecta sobre la base el rostro de la monja. Es una pieza cargada de simbolismo y fuerza.

Salí de la Galería de Nelson Domínguez con energías renovadas después de conectar con algo auténtico y poderoso. En estas obras está reflejada nuestra historia, nuestras pasiones, nuestras búsquedas y nuestros homenajes, todo transformado en arte.

Si caminan por Oficios, no se dejen deslumbrar solo por la Basílica, visiten esta galería. Es una experiencia maravillosa, es un acercamiento al alma de un genio que ve la belleza donde todos miramos, pero no siempre vemos.
