Antonio Maceo Monument in Havana

Hello my dear friends of this prestigious community of Architecture and Design. Today I want to show you a monumental work of great beauty and admirable sculptural value that has great historical significance for Cubans, it is the monument to General Antonio Maceo, who was called the Bronze Titan because of his great virtues and courage, he was at the forefront of the main battles against Spanish colonialism in the nineteenth century.
This monument of impressive beauty inaugurated in 1916 was designed by the Italian sculptor Doménico Boni; it is actually a group of sculptures made of bronze and placed on a granite pedestal. It is located in a very wide square in front of Havana's Malecon, known as Maceo Park in the neighborhood of Centro Habana.

Hola mis queridos amigos de esta prestigiosa comunidad de Arquitetectura y Diseño. Hoy quiero mostrarles una obra monumental de gran belleza y admirable valor escultórico que tiene gran significado histórico para los cubanos, se trata del monumento al general Antonio Maceo, quien era llamado el Titán de Bronce debido a sus grandes virtudes y coraje, estuvo al frente de los principales combates contra el colonialismo español en el siglo XIX.
Este monumento de impresionante hermosura inaugurado en 1916 fue diseñado por el escultor italiano Doménico Boni; es en realidad un conjunto de esculturas hechas de bronce y dispuestas sobre pedestal de granito. Está situado en una plaza muy amplia frente al malecón habanero, conocido como el parque Maceo en el barrio de Centro Habana.
The monument has three staggered levels built of granite.
The sculpture of General Maceo is located at the top of the monument with his back to the sea and facing the city, on a horse that has its two front legs raised symbolizing that the titan died in combat. In his right hand he holds a machete in fighting position while he holds the horse with his left hand.
The sculptures at the base of the monument that represent the virtues of General Maceo, the sculptor wanted to represent the Thought, the Action, the Law and the Justice.
In the middle level we can observe passages of the history of the independence struggle where Maceo had an active participation.
In one of the ends there is a scene in bronze that represents the mother of the Maceos inciting her children to fight for the independence, according to the story she told her youngest son: Push yourself so that you also go to fight for your homeland; this way it is reflected in the work.
All the sculptures that conform the monument enjoy an admirable visual aesthetics, the sculptor achieved the facial expressions, gestures and the well outlined musculatures.
El monumento tiene tres niveles escalonados construidos de granito. La escultura del general Maceo se encuentra en lo más alto del monumento de espaldas al mar y de frente a la ciudad, sobre un caballo que tiene sus dos patas delanteras levantadas que simboliza que el titán murió en combate. En su mano derecha tiene el machete en posición de lucha mientras sostiene al caballo con la mano izquierda.
Llama mucho la atención las esculturas que se encuentran en la base del monumento que representan las virtudes del general Maceo, el escultor quiso representar el Pensamiento, la Acción, la Ley y la Justicia.
En el nivel medio podemos observar pasajes de la historia de la lucha independentista donde Maceo tuvo una participación activa.
En unos de los extremos se observa en bronce una escena que representa a la madre de los Maceos incitando a sus hijos a luchar por la independencia, según la historia ella le dijo a su más pequeño hijo: Empínate para que vayas a luchar también por tu patria; así se ve reflejado en la obra.
Todas las esculturas que conforman el monumento gozan de una estética visual admirable, el escultor logró las expresiones faciales, gestos y las musculaturas bien perfiladas.
It is a very busy park for both locals and people who are passing through. Children play here, the elderly exercise in the mornings while other people walk their dogs.
It is impossible to walk through the park without feeling the attraction of this great monument, which inspires strength and sensitivity at the same time. If we get to detail each sculpture we can appreciate how much beauty there is in each figure.
The vegetation of the park is poor, due to the aggressive climate caused by the salinity that comes from the sea, there are some plants typical of coastal areas. This area is exposed to constant flooding from the sea, so the plants that tolerate this saline environment are low growing.
Es un parque muy concurrido tanto por los lugareños como por las personas que están de paso. Aquí suelen jugar los niños, los mayores hacen ejercicios en las mañanas mientras otras personas pasean a sus perros.
Es imposible caminar por el parque sin sentir la atracción de este gran monumento, que inspira fuerza y sensibilidad al mismo tiempo. Si nos ponemos a detallar cada escultura podemos apreciar cuanta belleza hay en cada figura.
La vegetación del parque es pobre, debido al clima agresivo por la salinidad que viene del mar, hay algunas plantas típicas de las zonas costeras. Esta zona está expuesta a constantes inundaciones del mar por lo que las plantas que toleran este ambiente salino son de porte bajo.
The best time to sit and admire the monument is at sunset, when the sun is setting, so we can enjoy the breeze coming from the sea and also the beauty of the sunset.
It is easy to make out from the park the surrounding environment, it is a mixture of modern buildings typical of Cuban architecture, among them is observed the Hermanos Ameijeiras Hospital, that is located in front of the monument.
El mejor momento para sentarse a admirar el monumento es al atardecer, cuando el sol se está poniendo, así podemos disfrutar de la brisa que viene del mar y también de la belleza del atardecer.
Es fácil divisar desde el parque el entorno que le rodea, es una mezcla de edificios modernos típicos de la arquitectura cubana, entre ellos se observa el Hospital Hermanos Ameijeiras, que está situado al frente del monumento.
