A Visit to the Holy Christ of the Good Journey in Old Havana [eng/esp]
Hello friends of this beautiful community. Today I want to share with you a visit I've been looking forward to for a long time. A visit to a parish with a very important history, linked to popular religion for several centuries. I'm referring to the Church of the Holy Christ of the Good Journey, located in the heart of Old Havana.
If we walk down Brasil Street, popularly known as Teniente Rey Street, just one block from the National Capitol, we come across Cristo Park, which is adjacent to this parish church.
It's the second oldest church in Havana still standing and functioning. It began as a humble hermitage back in 1604. Imagine, this area must have been very different back then.
That small hermitage was the final point of a deeply felt ceremony: the Stations of the Cross, a pilgrimage made by the faithful in remembrance of Jesus' martyrdom on the cross. The procession departed from the Convent of San Francisco and, with deep devotion, walked down Amargura Street to reach this site. This pilgrimage still takes place every Friday afternoon during Lent during Holy Week. It's very beautiful to keep traditions alive, which is why I wanted to get to know it up close.
I enjoyed learning about the history of its construction, and I'm sharing it with you. It's a simple parish church that, when rebuilt in 1755, adopted the facade structure we see today, with its two octagonal bell towers. The balcony on the facade caught my attention; this type of design is unusual in our churches. Later, in 1932, two side aisles were added, one on each side of the existing one, along with the large columns we see today.
As you cross the threshold, you sense peace, shutting out the bustle of Havana. It's small but welcoming. Its ornamentation is simple; the first thing that catches my eye are its colorful stained-glass windows with religious scenes. I marvel at the thought that they've been there, letting in light and coloring the interior of the church, for more than 200 years. They've survived hurricanes, heat, humidity, and the simple passage of time.
The main altar is very simple, and among the various altars is one that cannot be missing in our Catholic churches: our patron saint of La Caridad del Cobre.
Its ceiling is another gem. The original precious wood ceiling in the central nave is preserved, a miraculous witness to the passage of time. In the side aisles, the ceiling is decorated with religious motifs that add a touch of color and solemnity to the complex.
The name "Church of the Holy Christ of the Good Voyage" was derived from the popularity this church acquired among travelers and sailors during the colonial era, at a time when travel was highly risky. Travelers, especially sailors, would come here before setting sail to pray to Christ for luck, and after arriving on land to thank him.
I really enjoyed visiting this parish. I had the feeling of having been in a special place, a haven of peace that has, for centuries, protected its faithful. It is one of the most authentic jewels this wonderful city holds.
See you soon!

The history of the church is worthy of praise. And the fact that it's been there standing tall and proud after how many years already, it's just amazing how it's beauty is effectively preserved. This is such a good read. Feels like I went there too.
