Subfamily Lymantriinae

Just looking at the picture gives me goosebumps and makes my hair stand on end. This is an extremely dangerous hairy caterpillar; it is relatively large, making it easy to spot when resting on plants or green grass. However, it is a different story when it settles on trees, as its brown color allows it to blend in perfectly with the bark or twigs. I actually do not know the color of its body, as it is almost entirely covered in dense, fine hairs; if you look closely at its back, you can see four distinct tufts of hair that are thicker and more strikingly colored. I am well aware—and have personally experienced—the terrible effects of accidentally touching or brushing against this caterpillar; its hairs can cause severe swelling and a painful, burning sensation, but the most unbearable part is the intense, uncontrollable itching.

I personally managed to find this particular caterpillar on the areca nut tree right in front of me; I immediately removed it using a small branch and threw it into the trash.
