A few days ago, we took the opportunity to get out and about again. The weather is very changeable at the moment and it rains quite often, so we have to make the most of every dry spell. As planned, our trip took us out of the city and into the countryside, and at one of our stops I was treated to a surprising sight.

As usual, I always like to look at the different trees I find in nature, and at one point I couldn't believe my eyes at first. Even from a distance, I saw a tall conifer with small round fruits hanging from its branches. At first I wasn't sure, but of course I quickly moved closer to see for myself.

Vor ein paar Tagen hatten wir die Chance genutzt und waren mal wieder ein wenig draußen unterwegs. Das Wetter ist gerade sehr wechselhaft und es regnet ziemlich oft, so dass wir einfach jede trockene Gelegenheit nutzen müssen. Unser Ausflug hatte uns wie geplant raus aus der Stadt und aufs Land geführt, und bei einem unserer Stopps bot sich mir ein überraschender Anblick.

Wir üblich schaue ich mir immer gerne die verschiedenen Bäume an, und an einer Stelle wollte ich zuerst meinen Augen nicht trauen. Schon von weiten sah ich einen hohen Nadelbaum an dessen Ästen kleine runde Früchte hingen. Zuerst war ich mir nicht sicher, aber ich bin natürlich ganz schnell nähergekommen, um mich zu überzeugen.

And yes, these round fruit capsules belong to one of my favorite trees. The bald cypress, also known as the swamp cypress, is actually native to North America, but a few years ago I encountered it for the first time in Japan. In addition to its majestic appearance, it was probably the characteristic fruits that caught my attention at the time, which fall to the ground in abundance during the fall. There, they often open up and, if you bring your nose a little closer, they exude a very pleasant sweet scent.

Und jawohl, diese runden Fruchtkapseln gehören zu einem meiner Lieblingsbäume. Die Echte Sumpfzypresse, auch Sumpfeibe genannt, ist eigentlich in Nordamerika heimisch, aber von ein paar Jahren bin ich ihr das erste Male auch in Japan begegnet. Neben dem recht majestätischen Anblick waren es wohl auch die charakteristischen Früchte, die es mir damals angetan hatte, und welche im Laufe des Herbstes zuhauf auf den Boden fallen. Dort öffnen sie sich oft und wenn man seine Nase etwas näher ranhält, verströmem sie einen sehr angenehmen süßlichen Duft.

Characteristic of that tree are the so-called “cypress knees,” root bulges that normally grow significantly out of the ground. Here on this example, they were rather small and flat, and I assume that they were cut off for safety reasons. Probably so that the children romping around here don't trip over them and break their bones.

Charaktertisch für die Echte Sumpfzypresse sind die sogenannten Atemknie, Wurzelausbuchtungen, die normalerweise deutlich aus der Erde herauswachsen. Hier an diesem Exemplar waren sie eher klein und flach, und ich nehme an, dass sie aus Sicherheistgründen abgeschnitten wurden. Wahrscheinlich sollen die hier herumtobenen Kinder besser nicht darüber fallen und sich die Knochen brechen.

Here we see a seed capsule that has already burst open, revealing a resinous interior. It is this very resin that gives off the sweet smell I mentioned earlier, which I naturally had to check out for myself. And yes, that's exactly how these seed capsules should smell, and this time too, I took a few of them home with me. Autumn mean also harvest time, and even though I don't have much use for these round balls, I'm always happy when I see them lying in front of our house or in my car. As I've often said, it doesn't take much to feel good....

Hier sehen wir eine bereits aufgeplatzte Samenkapsel, die innen recht harzig ist. Und genau dieses Harz verströmt dann wohl auch den erwähnten süßlichen Geruch, den ich natürlich auch gleich getestet habe. Und jawohl, genau so müssen diese Samemkapseln riechen, und auch diesmal habe ich mir ein paar davon mit nach Hause genommen. Herbst ist nämlich auch Sammelzeit, und auch wenn ich mit diesen runden Kugeln nicht viel anfangen kann, freue ich mich doch jedes Mal darüber, wenn ich sie bei uns vor dem Haus oder bei mir im Auto liegen sehe. Wie bereits oft erwähnt, es braucht meist nicht viel, um sich gut zu fühlen....
