Fending off the water =/= Wehret dem Wasser 👹🍣🎎 Wonderful Japan ENG-GER

If there's one thing we have in our region, it's water. Well, Japan is an island country, so the sea can't be far away. But there are also a lot of rivers and over the course of time, humans have learned how to make use of these rivers. Of course, this doesn't always work out the way you want it to, but when it comes to water, people have had one or two ideas that at least help to protect them from the catastrophic floods that in the past have often come upon them unexpectedly and all the more violently.

As you've probably already noticed, I don't live that far from the coast, and that's why I pass by the sea quite often. I usually plan these routes to add a little variety to my everyday driving, and it usually does my mood a lot of good. The sea really has a positive effect on me, regardless of the time of year or the sea. Being near the water always works!

Wenn es eines bei uns in der Region gibt, dann ist es Wasser. Nun ja, Japan ist ein Inselreich und da liegt es nahe, dass das Meer nicht weit sein kann. Aber es gibt auch eine ganze Menge Flüsse und der Mensch hat im Laufe der Zeit gelernt, wie es sich diese Flüsse zu diensten machen kann. Und dabei hat er dann auch verstanden, dass er sich nicht hilflos den Elementen ausliefern sollte, sondern besser versucht, diese zumindest ein wenig unter Kontrolle zu bringen. Natürlich klappt das meist nicht immer so, wie man sich das wünscht, aber in Sachen Wasser haben wir dann die so eine oder andere Idee gehabt, die uns zumindestes die meiste Zeit über vor Flutkatrastrophen schützen tut, welcher in früherer Zeit oft unverhofft und dabei umso gewaltiger über uns hereingebrochen sind.

Wie ihr wahrscheinlich bereits mitbekommen habt, lebe ich gar nicht so weit von der Küste entfernt und daher komme ich recht oft am Meer vorbei. Meist plane ich diese Routen extra ein, um ein wenig Abwechslung in meinen Fahralltag zu bekommen, und meist tut das meiner Stimmung ziemlich gut. Das Meer hat einfach eine positive Wirkung auf mich, wobei die Jahreszeit und das Meer dabei nebensächlich sind. Meer geht immer!

On my trips, I quite frequently cross a man-made canal, which connects our large river with the sea via a shorter route and which in times of excessive water supply helps to dispose of these water masses more quickly into the open sea. This canal is regulated by a large weir, which you can also cross by road, giving you a direct view of the large body of water in front of you. But it is only from a distance that you can see how huge this structure is, which is used to control the water levels and protect people from disasters.

Bei meinen Fahrten überquere ich immer wieder einen menschgegrabenen Kanal, welcher den großen Fluss bei uns auf kürzerem Weges mit dem Meer verbindet und dabei hilft, in Zeiten zu großen Wasserangebots diese Wassermassen etwas schneller ins offene Meer zu entsorgen. Reguliert wird dieser Kanal von einem großen Wehr, über den auch eine Straße führt, wovon man einen direkten Blick auf das große Wasser hat. Aber erst aus einiger Entfernung sieht man, wie gewaltig doch diese Anlage ist, mit der das Wasser hier kontrolliert werden soll.

Flanked by six towers, the water gate stretches for around 200 meters across the canal, which has reached a great width at this point. As already mentioned, there is no shortage of water in Japan, so many rivers have become quite wide up to their mouths. Bridge building seems to be quite a lucrative business in Japan, as there are so many watercourses to cross in this country.

On that day, the sea outside the gates of the weir was rather calm, but sometimes it whips wildly and aggressively, showing that the sea has no bars after all and that you should be careful whenever and wherever you come to the coast. It was only during the last earthquake that there was another tsunami warning, and in the worst-affected region, the tides caused great devastation. Fortunately, there was no major damage in our city. But it is probably this kind of feeling that makes me look at this construction with awe every time I see it.

And next time too, when I pass here and cross the canal, I will be fully aware of where I am and what important place this is. But at the same time I will also enjoy being near the water and near the coast, and I am sure that I will quite good about it!

Flankiert von sechs Türmen streckt sich das Wassertor über rund 200 Meter lang über den Kanal, welcher an dieser Stelle selbe eine große Breite erreicht hat. Wie bereits gesagt, an Wasser herrscht hier bei uns kein Mangel, so dass viele Flüsse bis zu ihrer Mündung ziemlich breit geworden sind. Brückenbau scheint in Japan ein recht einträgliches Geschäft zu sein, so viele Wasserläufe müssen hier im Lande überquert werden.

An jenem Tag war die See vor den Toren des Wehres eher ruhig, aber manchmal peitscht sie auch wild und angriffslustig und zeigt, dass das Meer eben doch keine Balken hat und man immer und überall vorsichtig sein sollte, wenn man an die Küste kommt. Erst beim letzten Erdbeben gab es ja wieder eine Tsunamiwarnung, und in der am stärksten betroffenen Region haben die Meeresfluten für große Verwüstung gesorgt. Glücklicherweise ist bei uns die Katastrophe ausgeblieben. Auch hier kann ein Wehr von Nutzen sein, und zumindest einen Teil der Wassermassen draußen lassen, bevor sie den Fluss hinauf rollen und dort Schaden anrichten. Wahrscheinlich ist es auch dieses Gefühl, welches mich jedes Mal mit Ehrfurcht auf diese Konstruktion blicken lässt.

Und auch das nächste Mal, wenn ich hier vorbeikomme und den Kanal überquere, werde ich mir voll bewusst sein, wo ich bin und was für ein wichtiger Ort dies ist. Aber gleichzeitig werde ich es auch genießen, in der Nähe des Wassers und der Küste zu sein, und ich bin mir sicher, dass dies meiner Laune wirklich gut tun wird!
