So, where do you think we are today?

At first glance, the first photo seems to hide more than it reveals, and you might find yourself wondering what exactly we’re looking at here. But if you look more closely and then check out the other photos, you’ll realize that we’re standing in front of a very special building.

That’s right—it’s Sanssouci, the elegant private palace of Frederick the Great, which is one of the most famous landmarks in Potsdam. It was built in the 18th century for the Prussian king and is surrounded by a large, beautiful park. The vineyard terraces in front of the palace are particularly well-known, and you can see them clearly in the first two photos.

“Sanssouci” comes from French and means “without worry”; it was intended to serve as a place of peace and relaxation for the Prussian monarch. I think it probably served that purpose well, although Frederick didn’t allow himself much rest. He was quite active and, above all, preoccupied with his many wars—both small and large—some of which he ultimately managed to win.

Today, Sanssouci Palace and its surrounding park are among Potsdam’s most popular attractions, though there are plenty of other palaces to visit there as well. So go ahead and treat yourselves to a trip there and see with your own eyes...

Ja, wo sind wir denn heute wohl?

Das erste Foto scheint erst einmal mehr zu verstecken, als zu zeigen, und man mag noch ein wenig rätseln, was wir hier denn zu sehen bekommen. Aber wenn man genauer hinblickt und sich dann auch die anderen Fotos ansieht, erkennt man dann doch, dass wir hier vor einem ganz besonderen Gebäude stehen.

Genau, es handelt sich im Sanssouci, das schicke Privatschloss von Friedrich dem Großen, welches zu den bekanntesten Bauwerke in Potsdam gzählt. Es wurde im 18. Jahrhundert für den preußischen König erbaut und ist von einem großen, schönen Park umgeben. Besonders bekannt sind die Weinbergterrassen vor dem Schloss, welche man auch gut in den Fotos sehen kann.

Sanssouci kommt aus dem Französischen und bedeutet „ohne Sorge“ und sollte dem preußischen König als Ort der Ruhe und Erholung dienen. Ich denke, diese Funktion sollte es gut ausgefüllt haben, obwohl sich der alte Fritz wohl selber nicht viel Erholung gegönnt haben wird. Er war eher umtriebig und vor allem mit seinen vielen kleinen und großen Kriegen beschäftigt, von denen er letztendlich dann auch so einige gewinnen konnte.

Heute gehört das Schloss Sanssouci mit dem umliegenden Park zu den beliebtesten Sehenswürdigkeiten Potsdams, wobei es dort noch eine ganze Menge anderer Schlösser zu besichtigen gibt. Gönnt euch also ruhig mal einen Ausflug dorthin und überzeugt euch selber...
