I recently visited the village of Orłowo and the nature reserve there - Lake Orłowo Małe Nature Reserve. This trip was very strange, and the further I went, the worse it got. The reserve aroused in me the opposite emotions to other places of its kind. I returned home sad and with a wounded faith in people.

A bit of history and information

This small nature reserve was established back in 1958. It is a faunal reserve and deals with the protection of the pond turtle listed in the Polish Red Book of Animals as a very high-risk, endangered species. It covers an area of just 14.76 hectares and includes within its boundaries a small lake called Orłowo Małe and adjoining forest areas.

Beginning of the expedition

Initially, @aleximprovement and I decided to go to another reserve called Koniuszanka II, but the day before we changed our minds and went to visit the turtles. We took our cameras with us and set off on our journey. On the way, we were caught in a storm, which meant we had to wait for a while in the village of Orłowo. Taking advantage of my free time, I asked a local how to get there. Instead of an answer, I heard a question that brought sadness to the old man's face - "Do you want to see a turtle?". I replied, with a short "yes", in response I heard "you have no chance of that, the turtle is gone". Grandpa blamed the fishermen and the people who were supposed to be managing the area. From his facial expressions and the way he spoke, his love and commitment to this reserve shone through. Despite this information, we decided to go and the old man showed us the way.

Lake Orłowo Small Nature Reserve

The reserve was located in a deep forest. The surroundings were nice, but we immediately noticed a lot of rubbish, which should not happen in a nature reserve. There were a few cars standing next to the reserve, but they were not tourists' cars, only fishermen's cars. Back home I did a little research and came across conflicting information. Some people said that a turtle has little chance of survival caught with a fishing rod, and some said that this was not true. Anyway, my question is why are people fishing in a reserve that protects a water-dwelling species? It was very strange and aroused a lot of negative emotions. We didn't even meet a single tourist during the hike. The state of the reserve is agonising. There are no directional signs, the paths had long since become overgrown and the footbridge that took us nowhere was collapsed. I read that an observation tower had been erected here a few years ago. Unfortunately, the water level had dropped, the lake had shrunk, and from the vantage point only bushes were visible. Rubbish was lying everywhere, it was mainly cans and beer bottles and fishing tackle. The place was wild and pretty, but sad and neglected. Despite all this, I managed to take some nice pictures.

Summary

I don't recommend going there, but for that, publicising the issue is even required. It's sad that such a place has fallen into disrepair and I fervently hope that this reserve can be saved. Although is there any point if the turtles are supposedly gone? Privately, I have taken an interest in the matter and have started to read a lot about the place. If I manage to explore the subject further, I will definitely write a post about it.

Niedawno odwiedziłem wieś Orłowo i tamtejszy rezerwat przyrody - Rezerwat przyrody Jezioro Orłowo Małe. Ta wyprawa była bardzo dziwna, a tym dalej zaszedłem, tym było jeszcze gorzej. Rezerwat wzbudził we mnie emocje odwrotne do innych miejsc tego typu. Do domu wróciłem smutny i ze zranioną wiarą w ludzi.

Trochę historii i informacji

Ten niewielki rezerwat przyrody powstał już w 1958 roku. Jest rezerwatem faunistycznym i zajmuje się ochroną żółwia błotnego wpisanego do polskiej czerwonej księgi zwierząt jako gatunek bardzo wysokiego ryzyka, zagrożony wyginięciem. Jego powierzchnia to tylko 14,76 hektara i w swoich granicach mieści nieduże jezioro Orłowo Małe i przylegające obszary leśne.

Początek wyprawy

Początkowo razem z @aleximprovement zdecydowaliśmy, że pojedziemy do innego rezerwatu o nazwie Koniuszanka II, ale dzień wcześniej zmieniliśmy zdanie i pojechaliśmy odwiedzić żółwie. Zabraliśmy ze sobą aparaty i wyruszyliśmy w podróż. Podczas drogi złapała nas burza, przez co musieliśmy chwilę poczekać we wsi Orłowo. Korzystając z wolnej chwili, zapytałem miejscowego, jak dotrzeć na miejsce. Zamiast odpowiedzi usłyszałem pytanie, które wywołało na twarzy starego człowieka smutek - "Chcecie zobaczyć żółwia?". Odpowiedziałem, krótkim "tak", w odpowiedzi usłyszałem "nie macie na to szans, żółwia już nie ma". Dziadek winił rybaków i ludzi, którzy mieli zarządzać tym terenem. Z jego mimiki i sposobu mowy biła miłość i zaangażowanie do tego rezerwatu. Mimo tych informacji zdecydowaliśmy się pojechać, a starszy człowiek wskazał nam drogę.

Rezerwat przyrody Jezioro Orłowo Małe

Rezerwat mieścił się w głębokim lesie. Okolica była ładna, ale od razu zauważyliśmy sporo śmieci, co w rezerwacie przyrody nie powinno mieć miejsca. Obok rezerwatu stało kilka aut, ale nie były to samochody turystów, a tylko i wyłącznie rybaków. W domu zrobiłem mały research i natrafiłem na sprzeczne informacje. Niektórzy mówili, że żółw ma małe szanse na przeżycie złapany na wędkę, a niektórzy mówili, że to nie prawda. W każdym razie mam pytanie, dlaczego ludzie łowią w rezerwacie, który chroni gatunek mieszkający w wodzie? Było to bardzo dziwne i wzbudzało dużo negatywnych emocji. Podczas wędrówki nie spotkaliśmy nawet jednego turysty. Stan rezerwatu jest agonalny. Brak kierunkowskazów, ścieżki dawno zarosły, a kładka, która zaprowadziła nas donikąd, była zawalona. Przeczytałem, że kilka lat temu postawiono tu wieżę obserwacyjną. Niestety stan wody spadł, jezioro się zmniejszyło, a z punktu widokowego było widać tylko krzaki. Śmieci leżały wszędzie, były to głównie puszki i butelki po piwie oraz przybory wędkarskie. Miejsce to było dzikie i ładne, ale smutne i zaniedbane. Pomimo tego wszystkiego udało mi się zrobić kilka ładnych zdjęć.

Podsumowanie

Nie polecam się tam wybierać, ale za to nagłośnienie tej sprawy jest wręcz wymagane. To smutne, że takie miejsce popadło w ruinę i mam przeogromną nadzieję, że uda się ten rezerwat uratować. Chociaż czy jest sens, skoro żółwi już podobno nie ma? Prywatnie zainteresowałem się tą sprawą i zacząłem dużo czytać o tym miejscu. Jeśli uda mi się zgłębić ten temat, to na pewno napiszę o tym post.
