Una espiga vieja / An old ear of corn

Una bola de lana grisácea
por todo la casa paseaba,
paso por la mesa de la sala
frente a un arreglo al que no dio importancia.

Siguió sin mirar,
pero aquel olor la hizo regresar,
había espigas viejas de clara tonalidad
y decidió una con su mano tomar.

A grayish ball of wool
wandered around the house,
passing by the living room table
in front of an arrangement it paid no attention to.

It continued without looking,
but that smell made it return.
There were old spikes of a light color,
and it decided to take one with its hand.

Se la llevó hasta su casa
y entró por la puerta afanada,
se acercó a un recipiente con agua
que tenía espuma exagerada.

En aquel recipiente colocó,
la espiga con ilusión,
esperando que recobrara el color
y que el agua cumpliera su misión.

He took it home with him
and hurried through the door,
approaching a container of water
that was covered in foam.

He placed the ear of corn in the container,
full of hope,
waiting for it to regain its color
and for the water to do its job.

Se fue antes de que anocheciera
y regresó cuando un día nuevo era,
la espiga ya no estaba en la escena,
se había hundido entre la espuma sin clemencia.

La lana gris con su mano la sacó,
el agua le quitó y entonces comprendió
que la vejez es de admiración
y con amor a su hogar la regresó.

She left before nightfall
and returned when a new day dawned,
the spike was no longer there,
it had sunk mercilessly into the foam.

She pulled out the gray wool with her hand,
removed the water and then understood
that old age is something to be admired,
and with love for her home, she returned it.
