Skiing On Lake Ice - Venturing Onto A New Trail

A neighbor of mine mentioned an island that I hadn't heard of before that had a lean to on it. I decided to ski to it. It was -18 C in the morning but about -6 C in the afternoon.

I left my car in a parking lot in the district of Niemi.

There were many skiers walkers and even cyclists on the ice.

The trail led to Mukkula manor.

I'd been here many times before but I had never tried this trail before.

The views are fantastic but the skiing itself is a little boring.

Karjusaari is a cape all of which used to be a public recreational area until it was re-zoned and developed. It's for wealthy people. There is a small undeveloped area left reserved for the public somewhere. I'm not sure where it is.

On my way to the island called Enonsaari directly ahead I was told that the island I originally planned to ski to had no trail leading to it made. I'll take what I can get, Enonsaari. It's almost entirely reserved for the public.

Close to that tall mast you can see Messilä, a ski resort and a camping area.

The city center is across the lake, the opposite shore of which is about 6 km away.

A lady who I asked about a nice place to stop and turn around at told me there is a lean-to a short distance away.

Here it is.

There was a couple inside the lean-to who had made fire. I learned stuff about Karjusaari I had not known before. I need to find that public recreational area on it.

You can see the ski resort better from this vantage point.

I went back the same way I came.

That big box of a building is a malting house. The wind was blowing from that direction. There was a sweet, pungent smell that was clearly recognizable.

Almost back to Niemi and my car.

On solid ground now and next to my car. An ice fisher told me the thickness of the ice was about 40 cm today where he fished. He said it was mostly clear ice. Quite strong.
