Construction on "Gulf Avenue" / Construcciones en la "Avenida del Golfo". (English/Spanish).

Today I went out thinking I'd come back with a really nice story to tell. I thought it would be interesting to walk around the neighborhood with my cell phone in hand and write something that most of my Hive colleagues might like. But there was another option: to board the little train that runs daily along Havana's seafront and from there give you the perspective you get when you ride it, going from Vedado to Old Havana and back.

But the train didn't appear, and before me lay a series of modern buildings along the seawall. There were several hotels and buildings with very interesting designs. Camera in hand, I began to create my story. Architecture is a subject that interests me greatly

The first stop was the "Girón" residential building, built in the late 1960s and an example of the brutalist style in Cuba.

The next building is the Grand Aston Hotel. I remember when its construction began. We were all at home due to the COVID-19 lockdown. I was able to see how it transformed into what it is today. Visually, it's attractive due to its shapes, the predominant straight lines, the alternation between concrete and glass, the blue color that reminds us of the sea... So I put my creativity to work, looking for interesting angles, inverting planes, and capturing interesting reflections.

As I walked past the hotel, a man driving a rental car approached me, thinking I was a foreigner. He commented that it was strange to see a woman photographer. I replied that he'd be speechless if I introduced him to all my photographer friends. Along the way, I also saw a wedding, fishermen, construction workers...

New construction continues to coexist alongside existing ones in the area. But, despite their newness, these older buildings continue to be excellent examples of Cuban architecture. Take the Atlantic Residential Complex, for example.

Continuing straight ahead, my feet took me to the Meliá Cohiba Hotel. The sun made my work difficult, but I managed to get some photos.

And just to the right, the Habana Riviera, much closer to that wide avenue that is the Havana seawall, but which I'll talk about in a future post. I took some photos that I loved, so they deserve a special post.

Hoy salí a la calle pensando regresar con una historia bien bonita que contar. Creí interesante pasearme cerca del barrio con el celular en mano y escribir algo que pudiera gustar a la mayoría de mis compañeros de Hive. Pero existía otra probabilidad: abordar el trencito que diariamente hace su recorrido por el malecón habanero y desde ahí dar a ustedes la perspectiva que se tiene cuando se pasea en él, yendo desde El Vedado hasta La Habana Vieja y viceversa.

Pero el trencito no apareció y ante mí se alineaban una serie de construcciones modernas, a lo largo de todo el malecón. Hay varios hoteles y edificios con diseños muy interesantes. Cámara en mano, empecé a crear mi historia
La arquitectura es un tema que me interesa mucho.

La primera parada fue el edificio de viviendas "Girón", construido a finales de la década de los años 60 y ejemplar del estilo brutalista en Cuba.

La próxima edificación es el Hotel Grand Aston, recuerdo cuando empezó su construcción. Estábamos todos en casa debido a la política de confinamiento a causa del COVID. Pude ver cómo se fue dando su transformación hasta convertirse en lo que es hoy. Visualmente es atractivo dado por sus formas, la predominante de líneas rectas, la alternancia entre el concreto y el vidrio, el color azul que nos remite al mar... Entonces puse a trabajar mi creatividad y trabajé los ángulos, invertí planos y me apropié de reflejos interesantes.

Mientras caminaba frente al hotel, un señor que maneja un auto de alquiler se acercó al pensar que era extranjera. Comentó que era extraño ver a una mujer fotógrafa. Le contesté que se quedaría sin habla si le presentara a todas las amigas fotógrafas que tengo. En el resto de la trayectoria, también pude apreciar una boda, pescadores, trabajadores de la construcción...

En la zona se siguen construyendo nuevas obras que coexisten con las ya existentes. Pero, a pesar de lo nuevo, éstas edificaciones con más años de existencia continúan siendo excelentes referentes de la arquitectura cubana. Por ejemplo: el Residencial Atlantic.

Continuando en línea recta, mis pies me llevaron al Hotel Meliá Cohiba. El sol hizo difícil mi trabajo pero logré algunas fotos.

Y justo a su derecha, el Habana Riviera, mucho más apegado a ésa amplia avenida que es el malecón habanero pero del que hablaré en una publicación futura. Hice unas fotos que me encantaron por lo que merecen una publicación especial.
