🇫🇷 Je me lance avec cette série "STOP" dans le récit de quelques escales. Je ne vais pas les faire dans l'ordre chronologique, juste par envie des histoires pour dépoussiérer quelques vieux souvenirs.

Nous sommes ici à l'Atoll de Maratua sur l'île de Bornéo.

🇫🇷 Voici la 3e et dernière partie de mon escale plongée à Maratua

Mes plongées autour de Maratua s’enchainaient durant plusieurs semaines. Je prends mes habitudes entre les plongées sur le tombant, celles au milieu du groupe de barracudas lorsque la météo et la marée m’y autorise, le platier qui regorge de surprises et même un sortie sur les iles voisines à la recherche de raies Manta que je ne trouverai jamais ! Le soir, je me rends souvent à l’hotel Nabucco où j’ai sympathisé avec l’équipe de direction et le personnel. Le temps d’une bière, d’un repas et d’un débriefing sur la plongée du jour ! La vie est douce ici, cela fait déjà un mois que je garde ce rythme et ne m’en fatigue pas !

My dives around Maratua went on for several weeks. I take my habits between the dives on the reef, those in the middle of the barracuda group when the weather and the tide allow me to do so, the reef that is full of surprises and even an outing on the neighboring islands in search of Manta rays that I will never find! In the evening, I often go to the Hotel Nabucco where I sympathized with the management team and the staff. Time for a beer, a meal and a debriefing on the day’s dive! 🇫🇷 Un soir, notre conversation de plongée nous emmène à parler d’un lac qui serait à quelques centaines de mètres à l’intérieur de l’île et qui hébergerait des milliers de méduses. Incroyable histoire contée par mes amis Rayner et Evelyne. A une époque que je ne tenterait pas de préciser, la baisse du niveau de la mer a créé ce lac et a emprisonné ces méduses à l’intérieur. Elles ont ainsi survécu jusqu’à aujourd’hui isolées de la mer et sans aucun prédateur. Ce dernier point est très important car il a autorisé ces méduses à ne plus posséder de système de défense, c’est à dire de poison urticant. Et oui, sans ennemi, plus besoin de se défendre !! Voici donc qu’il y aurait un lac au milieu de la forêt, rempli de méduses dont les tentacules seraient inoffensives… Et bien allons voir !

🇫🇷 Me voilà donc le lendemain en train de « randonner » en forêt avec un sac contenant des palmes, un masque et un caisson photo. La situation est assez cocasse mais j’adore ça ! Il me faudra une bonne demi-heure pour trouver le lac. Le lac est verdâtre et je ne vois rien depuis la surface. Je suis seul et la situation est assez glauque. Je trouve tant bien que mal une berge pour me mettre à l’eau et me laisse glisser en douceur dans l’eau. Les fonds sont étranges. Rien de connu pour moi. Là où on s’attendrait à trouver des branchages, j’y trouve des éponges et des mousses que je n’ai jamais vu ailleurs. Il ne faut pas oublier que ce lac est encore salé et que la vie sous-marine se rapproche davantage de celle que l’on trouve en mer que de celle que l’on peut trouver pour un lac d’eau douce. Les photos d’éponges s’enchainent mais toujours pas de méduses. Peut-être serait-ce parce que je suis toujours à moins de 5m du bord… Aurais-je peur ?!! Je pousse donc ma curiosité vers le centre du lac et en moins de 30 sec je me retrouve soudainement entouré de méduses. La situation est incroyable ! J’ai beau me répéter la conversation avec Rayner et Evelyne sur le côté inoffensif des méduses, mais j’ai tout de même du mal à accepter le contact avec les méduses. Et puis je tente, un doigt le long d’une tentacule, et en effet rien d’urticant ! La même situation en pleine mer avec la même espèce de méduses m’aurait fait crié et sortir de l’eau immédiatement. Mais ici rien de cela. Je continue donc ma visite du groupe de méduses en tentant de prendre quelques photos et d’immortaliser ce moment unique. Il n’existe qu’une dizaines de lacs dans le monde offrant la même situation. C’est donc réellement un moment unique !

The depths are strange. Nothing known to me. Where one would expect to find branches, I find sponges and mosses that I have never seen elsewhere. It must not be forgotten that this lake is still salty and that the underwater life is closer to that found in the sea than to that which one can find for a freshwater lake. The sponge photos are linked but still no jellyfish. Maybe it’s because I am always less than 5m from the edge... Would I be afraid ?!! So I push my curiosity towards the center of the lake and in less than 30 seconds I suddenly find myself surrounded by jellyfish. The situation is incredible! Despite repeating the conversation with Rayner and Evelyne about the harmless side of jellyfish, I still have a hard time accepting contact with jellyfish. And then I try, a finger along a tentacle, and indeed nothing urticant! The same situation in the open sea with the same species of jellyfish would have made me scream and come out of the water immediately. But here, nothing like that. So I continue my visit of the group of jellyfish by trying to take some photos and immortalize this unique moment. There are only a dozen lakes in the world offering the same situation. So it’s really a unique moment!

🇫🇷 Aujourd’hui, soit quelques années depuis cette baignade dans ce lac, Chatgpt m’a listé une dizaines de lac « à méduses » répartis dans le monde. Palaos, Papouasie, Indonésie, mais il n’a pas listé celui-ci ! Et je me suis bien gardé de lui en donner la localisation !
