Mais encore une fois, il faut partir. Pourquoi partir? Voilà une question qui revient régulièrement en tête de mes discours intérieurs. Peut-être, pour pouvoir arriver? Sans les adieux, que deviendraient les arrivées? Sans avoir quitté Lamap et mes amis aux cœurs si gros, je n’aurais jamais partagé cette journée avec mon ami Pontiano, un passionné de mer résidant à Norsup, qui a amicalement mis sa barque à ma disposition pour aller visiter les fonds de la région. Je n’aurai jamais pu voir le bleu iréel des rivières d’Oyster Bay, me rappelant la réaction d’une jeune fille mahoraise que j’avais menée, à l’époque, flirter avec le récif de son île, et qui, surprise par les bleus saisissants des eaux, avait plongé sa main pour en capturer quelques gouttes et en vérifier ainsi la couleur...

Et aujourd’hui, je ne me serais pas retrouvé à Lathu Island, en face de cette centaine de requins gris, à me demander ce qu’il serait raisonnable de faire ou de ne pas faire...

Le tombant est vertigineux, ne laissant pas le moindre rebord avec la falaise en surface. Devant moi, une centaine de requins gris pris dans une ronde intrigante. A ce moment je suis incapable d’évaluer leur taille et la distance qui nous sépare. La clarté de l’eau est telle, que tous mes repères habituels sont faussés, jusqu’au moment où le groupe de requins explose dans tous les sens, ne laissant en son centre qu’une énorme carangues ignobilis. La belle est venue percuter ce groupe, surement agacée par leur ronde interminable. C’est alors que je comprends qu’il ne s’agit que d’individus juvéniles ne dépassant guère le mètre de longueur...” A suivre...

But once again, you have to leave. Why leave? This is a question that regularly recurs in my inner discourse. Maybe, to be able to arrive? Without goodbyes, what would become of arrivals? Without having left Lamap and my friends with such big hearts, I would have never shared this day with my friend Pontiano, a sea enthusiast residing in Norsup, who kindly put his boat at my disposal to go visit the depths of the region. I would never have been able to see the Aegean blue of the rivers of Oyster Bay, reminding me of the reaction of a young Mahoran girl whom I had led, at the time, to flirt with the reef of her island, and who, surprised by the striking blues of the waters, had dived her hand to capture a few drops and thus check the color...

And today, I would not have found myself on Lathu Island, in front of this hundred of gray sharks, wondering what it would be reasonable to do or not to do...

Logbook Note - Lathu Island, Vanuatu - 27 Sep 2009... The visibility is extraordinary, it is almost disorienting. The drop-off is vertiginous, not leaving any ledge with the cliff on the surface. In front of me, a hundred gray sharks caught in an intriguing circle. At this moment I am unable to evaluate their size and the distance that separates us. The clarity of the water is such that all my usual landmarks are distorted, until the moment when the group of sharks explodes in all directions, leaving in its center only an enormous ignobilis jacks. The beauty came to crash into this group, surely annoyed by their endless circle. It is then that I understand that these are only juvenile individuals hardly exceeding a meter in length...
