It is still a nice job to get up every morning to have to observe the whales!! This week was superb. We were able to observe all the phases of life of humpback whales. A mother and her calf in the middle of jumping education session, more discreet phases with solitary individuals performing apnea of more than 25 minutes, sessions of jumps, pectoral movements on the surface, caudal reactions, of the identifications and even this morning of reproduction sequence. What better, what more?!! As a reminder, we observe these cetaceans in the bay of Sal Rei in Cape Verde, and they go to this country to find warm and calm waters in order to give birth to "small" calves of 700kg with more safety compared to the water temperature. ICi, the sea is at 20°C, in the poles where whales live, it is at 2°C. A calf would not survive... After two months of breastfeeding, the baby will reach two tons and one or two more. It will then be ready to carry out its first migration to the North Pole and also ready to face storms, predators, fatigue... 50% of them will not reach adulthood. Reproduction also takes place here. With a gestation period of 11 to 12 months, this will give the females time to migrate north and come back next year to give birth. Here in the disorder a series of photographs that I hope will make you want to know this animal better. |
