🇬🇧 The Salins de l'Almanarre are not originally a natural environment. For centuries, man exploited salt thanks to an ingenious network of basins fed by seawater. Salt farming activity has gradually shaped a unique landscape: dikes, channels, shallow lagoons and basins with varying water levels. When salt production ceased, nature quickly reclaimed the place. Today, these ancient salt marshes constitute one of the most important wetlands of the French Mediterranean coast. They provide valuable habitat for hundreds of animal and plant species, including the famous pink flamingos. The Salins de l'Almanarre combine conditions of shallow water, allowing them to use their astonishing technique of feeding, abundant food, and tranquility. With their heads upside down in the water, they filter the mud with their highly specialized beaks to capture tiny organisms. |
