Another surgery and a sad news [EN-ES]

Since a few days ago I can no longer say that I am a photojournalist, the reason is simple, the magazine I worked for could no longer afford to have a multi-employed photographer and I can not work in one place. The situation in Cuba right now makes you look for different sources of income and it's a shame that I can no longer continue in a job that I love. My luck, I have other jobs, but I don't want to stop working in photography because it is a passion I have had for years, maybe this coming week I will interview for a photography studio, wish me luck. That's why I'm going to miss doing work like the one I'm presenting to you today.

These were part of the images I took while covering a news story about medicine in Cuba and of great impact on society. I will give you only my experience if you want to know the news you can go to magazine report.

For me, it was already normal to attend a surgery room and I have already talked about it in another publication, although this time I did not get to enter completely. We were not allowed to enter the room completely and had to stay in the adjacent room. What was different was being able to witness the journalists interviewing the protagonists of the day. I say, journalists, in the plural, because we were not the only ones to attend the event, even the television came by. It was like that to hear the story of how this surgery came to Cuba so many years after it was already being performed in most countries of the world. This would be the first one to be performed in Cuba and in an educational way to be able to teach it in all the hospitals of the country where it was possible to perform it. In the following images, you will see the main surgeon, the director of the Institute of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery, one of the assisting doctors together with the anesthesiologist and the Spanish surgeon who made it possible to bring this surgery to Cuba.

Desde hace pocos días no puedo seguir diciendo que soy un fotorreportero, la razón es sencilla, la revista para la que trabajaba no podía permitirse más tener un fotógrafo pluri-empleado y yo no puedo trabajar en un único lugar. La situación en Cuba ahora mismo te hace buscar distintas fuentes de ingreso y es una pena que ya no pueda seguir en un trabajo que me encantaba. Para mi suerte tengo otros trabajos, pero no quiero dejar de trabajar en la fotografía porque es una pasión que tengo desde hace años, quizás esta próxima semana haga una entrevista para un estudio de fotografía, deséenme suerte. Es por ello que voy a extrañar hacer trabajos como el que les presento hoy.

Estas fueron parte de las imágenes que realice al cubrir una noticia sobre medicina en Cuba y de gran impacto para la sociedad. Voy a darles solo mi experiencia, si desean conocer la noticia pueden ir al reportaje de la revista.

Para mí ya era normal asistir a un salón de cirugía y ya he hablado de ello en otra publicación, aunque esta vez no llegue a entrar del todo. No se nos permitía entrar completamente al salón y debíamos permanecer en la habitación adyacente. Lo diferente fue poder presenciar la entrevista que le realizaban los periodistas a los protagonistas del día. Digo periodistas, en plural, porque no fuimos los únicos en asistir al evento, hasta la televisión se pasó por allá. Fue así como escuchar la historia de como esta cirugía llego a Cuba tantos años después de que ya se realizaba en la gran mayoría de países del mundo. Esta sería la primera que se realizara en Cuba y de manera educativa para poder enseñarla en todos los hospitales del país donde fuese posible realizarla. En las próximas imágenes verán al cirujano principal, la directora del Instituto de Cardiología y Cirugía Cardiovascular, uno de los doctores asistentes junto al anestesista y el cirujano español que permitió traer esta cirugía a Cuba.

This person you see above has been the one who has taught Cuban doctors to perform this type of surgery, thanks to the friendship he has with several Cuban surgeons. It is from this friendship that initiatives such as these have arisen, in his own words. These are the kind of things that make me like having worked for the magazine so much, I still have a couple of stories to tell luckily, so some more will come to my blog. Esta persona que ven arriba ha sido quien ha enseñado a los doctores cubanos a realizar este tipo de cirugía, gracias a la amistad que tiene además con varios cirujanos cubanos. Desde esa amistad es que han surgido iniciativas como estas, dicho desde sus palabras. Son este el tipo de cosas que hacen que haber trabajado para la revista me gustase tanto, aun me quedan un par de historias que contar por suerte, así que alguna más llegara a mi blog.
