Animal care, innovation or both? [EN-ES]

I'm running out of photos from my work as a photojournalist but here's one more. This time we are going to talk about Bioterios and how the animal care law is implemented in them. Yes, I know you don't know what a biotherium is, and I didn't either, but I'm here to teach you. You can look up the definition of the word or ask ChatGPT for a better explanation, to me it's nothing more than a place created specifically for animal experimentation and yes, animal experimentation, that's what today's pictures are about.

Not so long ago I had the opportunity to capture the way a biotherium works in Cuba, specifically at the Center for Molecular Immunology (CIM). There, experiments are carried out on animals to test vaccines and drugs created to fight different types of cancer. This may be a dilemma for many people, even if they are trying to fight cancer but believe me that for those who carry out these procedures, it is also a dilemma. The only difference is that they are clear about the fact that it is the best way to analyze the drugs that are created. But in addition to them, they apply at all times the animal welfare law that was so recently approved in Cuba, and before them, they apply international law, with the care of a veterinarian constantly. But it does not stop there, on top of that they apply a scientific principle that seeks to generate the least damage and the least possible use of animals. I wanted to make all this clear before launching into the actual content, which is the images. Anyway, I am open to debate on the subject in the comments, hence the question in the title.

Let's get down to it. Like any scientific facility, the site is full of procedures and measures to not contaminate the site. Right down to a map of what the flow of any material should look like so as not to contaminate any samples, which was explained to us before we entered. Hence, we were covered from head to toe at all times, when we stopped by to witness the work that was being done that day.

Although if experimentation has been carried out on other animals, they usually have mice as a rule. Mostly white, which are popularly known as laboratory mice. Although later you will see some very different ones. As soon as we entered I could see how is the procedure to inject them, it may seem abrupt to see the image, but it is a very effective way to avoid any movement that hinders everything. It is something that lasts very little time, so the stress caused to the animal is minimal. After that, they return to their place and always in groups because they are animals that need social interaction.

Here you can see the naked mouse, as it was called during the interview. These have certain peculiarities that I don't want to mention because I'm sure I won't say it well, for all those doubts I leave the link to the report at the end of this publication. Here is where the biggest challenge for me as a photographer comes in, these small houses, to give them a name, are made of a material that did not allow me to make a good focus with the camera. I tried with both lenses, but it was difficult in both cases and maybe that's why you might miss a little more sharpness in these animals. If so, let me know in the comments and if you have a way to improve this in pre-production as well.

We are getting to the end and we move on to the area where the analysis of the samples or the necessary measurements of any parameter are carried out. I must say that the behavior of the animal is the most important analysis that is done because it is what often defines what is happening to the animal. In this part of the biotherium, there were only a few questions left, but the small place allowed me to create very good images that, due to the rush of depending on transportation and not being inside for a long time, I could not take. I didn't even try because they would end up rushing me and it would be in vain. Who knows if I will come back again.

So far today's publication, maybe a little small because I omitted many things that if you are curious you can read in the magazine report, if you are a nerd you should like it. Leave me any comment I always answer and if it is constructive criticism about documentary photography even better, I have a long way to go. See you next time.
