A Cuban in China: The First Night

Arrival was in the evening, a little after 6 PM. Without problems I went through customs, which is quite a spectacle, a Chinese woman touched me too much (something that happens to me a lot in Chinese customs), but the spectacle is because of how well organized and digitized everything is. It was even easier than getting out of Paris customs. Getting out of there, finding transportation and settling into the hotel was a piece of cake. Now, if you don't even know English, you'll have a big problem, because you won't even be able to use a translator since you don't have internet after arriving.

The night was young. It was not yet 9 pm, when I entered my hotel room and not having internet access yet (VPN problems), I decided to take the camera and go in search of adventure. So I went around the hotel, passing by a bridge where I could see a small picturesque building with a very typical architecture of the country, as you can see in the first image.

La llegada fue en la tarde noche, un poco más allá de las 6 PM. Sin problemas pasé por la aduana que es todo un espectáculo, una china me toqueteo de más (cosa que me paso mucho en las aduanas chinas), pero lo de espectáculo es por lo bien organizado y digitalizado que está todo. Fue incluso más sencillo que salir de la aduana de París. Salir de allí, encontrar el transporte y asentarme en el hotel fue algo muy sencillo. Ahora, si no sabes ni siquiera inglés, tendrás un gran problema, porque ni siquiera podrás usar un traductor al no tener internet acabado de llegar.

La noche era joven. Aún no eran las 9 de la noche, cuando entre en mi habitación del hotel y sin tener acceso a internet aún (problemas de VPN), decidí coger la cámara y salir en búsqueda de la aventura. Fue así como bordee el hotel, pasando por un puente donde se veía una pequeña edificación bien pintoresca y con una arquitectura muy típica del país, como ven en la primera imagen.

After that I tried to capture the atmosphere at that time of night on the street, with some fear, I must say for being an unknown country and was not in a tourist area to say. I threw myself into the adventure in a literal way, so much so that I even talked to some people looking for advice on how to access a phone line with internet and a much younger guy than me ended up guiding me to a place of the company China Mobile, but it was too late for that. But above all I was alarmed that he gave me an envelope with menthol, but I would not know what it was until hours later, in my mind was only the idea that he was giving me and more with the gestures he made indicating me that it was for smoking. Luckily, I found out later that it is a type of menthol that they chew while smoking, as menthol cigars are forbidden there. How crazy!

About the bicycles lying on top of each other, don't ask me, I have the same answer as if I asked you. I can only think that someone screwed up.

Luego de eso trate de captar el ambiente a esa hora de la noche en la calle, con cierto miedo, debo decir por ser un país desconocido y tampoco estaba en una zona turística que digamos. Me lancé a la aventura de manera literal, tan así que incluso hable con algunas personas buscando asesoría en como acceder a una línea de teléfono con internet y un muchacho mucho más joven que yo termino guiándome hasta un lugar de la empresa China Mobile, pero ya era muy tarde para ello. Pero sobre todo me alarmo que me regalara un sobre con mentol, pero yo no sabría que era eso hasta horas después, en mi mente solo estaba la idea de que me estaba dado y más con los gestos que me hacía indicándome que era para fumar. Por suerte, me enteré luego que es un tipo de mentol que ellos mascan mientras fuman, pues los cigarros con mentol allá están prohibidos. ¡Qué locura!

Lo de las bicicletas tiradas una encima de otra, no me pregunte, tengo la misma respuesta que si les preguntara a ustedes. Solo puedo pensar que alguien metió la pata.

Beyond that, I can only emphasize that for my luck I was close to what in Cuba can be called the Chinatown, because of the architecture so similar to an area of Havana where for years a community of Chinese settled. It may seem that in Beijing it is something natural to find architecture of this type, but do not think it is something so common. The city is divided by circles and I was in one of the farthest from the center. The closer to the center, the more modern architecture you will notice until you reach the skyscrapers of the city. But let me point something out, out of all the comparisons one makes to one's home country, in China crime is practically nil when it comes to theft. Notice how the electric motorcycles have coats on top that serve as a wall against the cold, but how important it is that you leave them there, next to the motorcycles without anyone taking them. But it's not the only thing, you find electric scooters and other things lying in front of the stores, without a chain or padlock for security. Things that I would like to happen in Cuba, but it takes 5 cameras for each inhabitant for that to happen, as it happens in China.

Más allá de eso, solo puedo resaltar que para mi suerte estaba de cerca de lo que en Cuba se le puede llamar como el barrio chino, por la arquitectura tan parecida a una zona de la Habana donde por años se asentó una comunidad de chinos. Te podrá parecer que en Beijing es algo natural encontrarse arquitecturas de ese tipo, pero no te creas que es algo tan común. La ciudad se divide por círculos y yo estaba en uno de los más alejados del centro. Mientras más cercano al centro, más moderna es la arquitectura que notaras hasta llegar a los rascacielos de la ciudad. Pero déjame remarcar algo, de entre todas las comparaciones que uno hace con su país natal, en China el delito es prácticamente nulo en lo que respecta a los robos. Fíjense como las motos eléctricas tienen abrigos encima que sirven de muro contra el frío, pero lo importante que es que los deja ahí, junto a las motos sin que nadie se los lleve. Pero no es lo único, te encuentras patinetes eléctricos y otras cosas tiradas frente a las tiendas, sin una cadena o candado puesto por seguridad. Cosas que me gustaría pasaran en Cuba, pero hacen falta 5 cámaras por cada habitante para que eso suceda, como mismo pasa en China.
