Someone told me that my story inspires
They told me write, that's what I'm trying to do. I've been writing for years, but it's different this time. Telling about my life or what I've done makes me nervous. I'm not insecure, just excited to start a new experience. My breathing gets deep, my stomach tightens and my hands don't respond as fast as I would like. I feel like this group is about inspiration and I've been told that my story inspires.
How do I write about my whole life, how do I present myself properly? I read several ways to do it, I saw some posts of people introducing themselves. Inspiration is always good, taking references is fine, but what if I try to do something original? I don't start with the beginning of life, but I detail my present and from there we travel back to the beginning. A good way to see if you find this "new character" interesting.

Con 22 años he escrito cinco libros.

Summary of who I am
My name is Manuel Salazar, I am a freelance journalist and a book author. At the age of 22 I have written five books. I published a short story with a publishing house (called Indohail) and I took my first step as a new author with a work called Hunter's Shipwreck that I financed on my own. I didn't want to work with publishers. I have had a sense of getting ahead without being constrained by a publishing line or controlled by a company. For this reason I work as a freelancer. At my young age I decided to marry my beautiful bride. I embarked on a path where my life has been interesting. In this paragraph I summarize. Now I will go in detail part by part. I hope you feel at ease with this reading.

Comienzos

Si no podía, Persy (mi mascota) siempre estaba allí escuchándome.

Beginnings
Reading the small paragraph where I leave a letter of life, questions may arise: Why be a writer? Why be a journalist? Why choose this path at a young age? Everything can be answered if I tell you about my beginnings.
In clichéd soap opera stories there is usually a boy who lives with his bad nanny while his parents work. That was my story, a shy and insecure little boy who didn't see his parents. Mom was a manager in a big pharmaceutical company and dad in a hotel. Money was plentiful, but at my age I didn't see that. The only thing I had in sight was the one who took care of me every day and who, in spite of everything, I kept a certain affection for.
To survive I created stories. I used to say that my only friend was my pet, a mongrel terrier who listened to everything I told her. He would take my toys and invent something new. Just like Backyardigans (the Discovery Kids series) every day we had a new adventure. We were both the same age, five at the time.
I liked to invent, I had ideas from series I watched. I would try to write down the ideas to have my own stories and cartoons that I thought I would have in the future. If I could, I would read those little stories to my relatives. If I couldn't, Persy (my pet) was always there listening to me.

More than once I took all my toys and created huge wars, Persy and I were on one side. The stuffed animals belonged to another side. Persy was never active, she would just follow me and when I asked her to attack she would throw herself on the ground.
When I was six years old, situations occurred that marked my life. An abuse that I don't want to talk too much about made my mother reconsider and quit her job to dedicate herself to my life. Added to that, less than a year after making that decision, she became pregnant.
Life became different. I was no longer alone, but I didn't feel completely at ease either. The arrival of my brother gave me the perspective of having to take care of someone and not allow him to feel alone like me. As he grew older I told him stories. Now it wasn't just Persy, but also my brother Sebas and the next year, my sister Vicky (If my mother got pregnant again).
I took it upon myself to help my siblings with everything. I even protected them from my own parents. One day my mom said she was going to enroll them in daycare and I cried for her not to. I guess I had traumas with being taken care of by other people.

photo_2023-05-08_20-46-27.jpg

Me costaba mucho.

As I got older, I wrote better. I would sit down and make up stories, scripts, short stories and try to make them as good as possible. I would compare them to books I read, seeing if I could make something really good.
I never finished a story. I'd start one and another and another, but I'd never finish them. I had a hard time. My siblings always wondered why I didn't follow the story I had already told them, I really couldn't do it.
At 10 years old, my brothers could ask me those kinds of questions and Persy was still there. Old, slow and a little sluggish, but wherever I went she moved. If I went to sleep, she would lie next to my bed. I would tell her about my days, tell her about my stories, Persy was always my friend.

12 years old, dark days were approaching...
Adolescence is a complicated process for everyone. There are school changes, new people, differences in our bodies. At my school I was the smallest, the first in line and even the one who took the longest to reach puberty. The jokes about my size were never lacking, but my face of disinterest in everything prevented any teasing from spreading too far.
I had few friends, with my cousins I didn't get along very well and with my parents I had a distant relationship. My siblings were growing up and reached the age where they wanted to get into mischief. They broke toys, scratched walls, many of my possessions were degraded by them. I had no consoles or games to lock me up. My refuge was Persy, also making things up in my head.
Dogs are not forever. I arrived home, I see Persy lying down and when I looked at her, she had a ball in one breast. I ran with my mom, we took her to the vet and they told us that nothing could be done because with her age an operation would be fatal. My beloved friend had become ill, and as she was fading away, so was I. I did not give importance to the task. I didn't care about homework, I didn't want to go to school. I just wanted to spend time with her.

I was offered various natural remedies, but none of it helped. The end was near, I was aware of it. The words of "everything will be all right" didn't matter, because I knew what was coming. I devoted myself for six months to Persy. I wanted to tell her everything, spend time with her, I wanted to give myself the illusion that when I came in and she was happy, it meant I was getting better.
None of that was real. One weekend I had to stay with my grandmother, as soon as I could get back to the house I ran to look for her. I couldn't get her. My mother looked at me and didn't know how to tell me that it had already happened. What hurt me the most was that I didn't say goodbye and that I felt she had died alone because I wasn't there.
When she shut down, I did too. I can't lie by saying that everything went on easily. I spent maybe more than four years not being myself. There was no creativity anymore, I didn't enjoy having friends or people I liked. I was just empty out there.
I even remember mentioning to my mother that I wanted to be a writer. She said that dream wasn't worth it and I didn't have the strength to fight for it. So there went my desire dying....

Redemption
But in the end this is not about drama, I don't want my story to be pitiful or make me look sad. If anything, I want you to notice the persistence, faith and strength I had to move forward.
Life went on, it took about four years for me to see the light again. At the age of 16 I started a different life. I got in touch with people, I read several books, I met good people and some of them even gave me advice. Not everyone I interacted with knew about the things I was going through, but there was someone in particular who I would sit with every time I left school and talk to for hours. I was late leaving to spend less time at home, she would get picked up late. So we made a good connection where she helped me a lot.

Serías buen escritor”, me dijo Patricia.

She became my best friend. We talked all day long, told each other about who we liked, how we studied and the problems we had in our families. That last point helped us connect a lot, we were going through similar situations. She was the first to notice that I had a certain talent for writing.
Her name is Patricia. We are not close now, but I treasure the time we spent together. We would even go for walks, just to tell each other things about each other. It was a genuine friendship that we didn't know how to continue with the distance of a new life at the universities. Although with this I am getting ahead of myself.
Long before I parted from Patricia, one sad day when I felt disgusting and thought that there was no point in continuing, I took my phone and wrote the first pages of a book that I never finished (It was called "Personas"). That day I learned that my emotions were driving me to create art. I showed these first images to three people, including Patricia. They all concluded that I had talent. "Why don't you write? You would be a good writer," Patricia told me. I thought about it, I remembered that when I read 100 Years of Solitude when I was 15 I wanted to be like Gabriel García Márquez. His way of narrating, the creation in his stories and his descriptions that take you into that world, captivated me.

“No podrás tener plata”

No había opciones.

I told myself that I would study social communication. I wanted to be a writer, journalist, chronicler and editor. It was a complicated dream because my father always wanted an engineer son. I could not study engineering, I was aware that it was not my thing. It was like shooting my dad when I told him that I was determined to follow my dreams.
"You will starve to death."
"You can't live on dreams"
"You won't be able to have money"
These were various phrases that I heard for months. None of them discouraged me, but rather I felt the urge to do better and prove that I could really achieve my dream. "If you decide to study that career, you pay for it yourself," was my father's ultimatum. How would a 16-year-old boy afford a private university?" Because yes, where I live I could only pursue it at a private institute. There were no options.
I didn't back down, having no idea how to go about it, I told him I would study regardless of his support. I stuck to my faith and talked to God telling him that if it was his purpose to help me to find a way to afford this career.
Help came. I got a small job and someone found out about my situation. A cousin who was out of the country without me asking her for anything, I had not even communicated with her. She called my phone telling me that if I needed money to pay for my college, to let her know that she was willing to pay for my whole career.
The answer from heaven came, the road was illuminated and I advanced triumphantly towards a new destiny.

Pase universitario

photo_2023-05-15_13-59-11.jpg
La primera portada que hice

University pass

College nurtured me. I learned so much from different journalists, I read a lot of books, I practiced a lot. A friend of mine who had already graduated had taught me part of what it was like to have my own style. It wasn't until my journalism classes that I showed the real talent I had.
I remember shyly going to my teacher and telling her that I wrote. She, Andrianibel Perfecto, told me I could send her anything I wanted. I started sending her my writings, but I took the first piece I thought could be published and passed it on to her. She was delighted, polished my style, perfected the way I did things, making me the writer I am today.
That was Hunter's Wreck, my first big book. Before I published it I wrote more. I took pandemic time to spend hours writing, days doing it, even finished several works.
During that time I had my first big breakthrough. A publishing house was looking for short stories in pandemic time. I sent one that I wrote in three days. The work was simple, but with a charm that I wanted to impress on those who read it. Success

Lloré, me entristecí, me rendí…

Usé a medias Wattpad.

QuoteThe publisher appreciated it, added it to their collection and many people were interested. We had the opportunity to work together. Show him other projects and get published. A great thing for a 20 year old. A great story that started to take my talent to new levels.
Like any protagonist, the story had to have some obstacles. Losses after the publishing pandemic did not allow the printing process to continue. There died that dream, the dream of publishing with someone big that would catapult my career.
I cried, I was saddened, I gave up... Momentarily.
The stubborn, fastidious and angry protagonist that lived in me pushed me to continue creating. To look for outlets on my own, to do something new. That's when I made the decision to publish through Amazon, all independently. But it wasn't enough, publishing through Amazon didn't create the impact on people I was looking for.
The university was passing, there I was known as a talented writer. I didn't make the leap in quality until two years later. I had tried many things, I published some short stories on a page. I created a Facebook page. I half-heartedly used Wattpad. Different alternatives to get people's attention, but I didn't achieve what I really wanted.

photo_2023-05-15_14-07-53.jpg

QuoteA big leap.
I was two months away from finishing college. An idea came into my head, we would advertise Hunter's Wreck digitally for free. We would market it right, find ways to print it, and advertise the physical publication. We did an arduous process of work where we got the attention of a lot of people.
I was recognized, I got on the radio, in the newspapers, in the digital news. I met many people motivated to want to read the book, but also those who wanted to write. We looked for different ways of printing. In Venezuela there were no printing houses, no publishing houses. However, the support we saw attracted the attention of places that wanted to take on the task of printing this work.
That is how we got the first presentation of a book I had. The site was filled, it became news and the advance continued. I was a guest with booths at events, signed autographs, gave talks and lectures. Life took a pretty drastic turn where I was beginning to see the fruits of my talent. Something I had worked very hard at and believed I could achieve. Even my father publicly admitted his mistake of wanting to force me to study something and accepted that this was my destiny.

QuoteThe story is still being told.
I got jobs as an editor, as a consultant for people who wanted to write, as a ghostwriter. Different ways of making a living that helped me advance in my projects. I got married because of this advancement and was able to set my goals in a better way as a graduate.
I am 22 years old and still striving to be a great writer. Right now I am considering different ways to continue showing this art that God blessed me with. That's how I got here. A friend recommended this to me to create my own blog. I plan to use this as a tool to show my reports, my research, interviews, my own stories and book previews.
I want to make an interesting profile where you can see every step of my career, but not only that. To be able to show educational, inspirational content, to create something that helps others. That's my purpose with everything I write. To educate, help and inspire to make a change.

QuoteIn the end I have written my whole life with the purpose of making everything better. I did not want my siblings to feel alone, I sought to brighten the lives of others, even to create a happy world. These reasons I have been following ever since. I am not just someone who wants to be a writer, or a famous and smart person. My true intentions have always been tied to doing something different. I remember Hayao Miyazaki saying that he was trying to give a more optimistic view of the world to those who watch his works. That's what I'm looking for. To create books that make people see reality in a different way, but not only see it, but also build it. To work for a different place, to improve and make what surrounds us work.
It is a big dream, for some people impossible. I believe it is possible, as they said in the Lorax, nobody will do anything until someone is interested in doing it. I am interested in generating that change. That's why my works always have a message to carry. Both Hunter's Shipwreck and Indohail have this purpose. So does every play I have written.
I have more than six completed works. All waiting for the moment to be shown to the world. The road has already begun, we will not stop until we get it. There are days when I sound like a serial protagonist, but so far that has led me to success. I will keep dreaming, working and trying to build something better. My next book to be published will be Indohail, I can guarantee that it will be something great and that it will lead the way to all the next works that are already there, waiting to generate a change in those who read them and in the whole society.
