On January 14, the 165th Visit of the Divine Shepherdess (Divina Pastora) to Barquisimeto took place. This is a religious event that has been taking place uninterruptedly every January 14 since 1856, with the exception of those corresponding to the years 2021 and 2022, due to the sanitary measures that were adopted in order to avoid the spread of Covid-19.
The Divine Shepherdess is an invocation of the Virgin Mary that had its origin at the beginning of the XVIII century in the city of Seville, and that between 1736 and 1740, arrived to these lands.
El pasado 14 de Enero, se llevó a cabo la Visita 165 de la Divina Pastora a Barquisimeto. Este es un evento de carácter religioso que ha estado realizándose de forma ininterrumpida cada 14 de Enero desde 1856, con excepción de los correspondientes a los años 2021 y 2022, por las medidas sanitarias que se adoptaron con el fin de evitar la propagación del Covid-19.
La Divina Pastora es una advocación de la Virgen María que tuvo su origen a principios del Siglo XVIII en la ciudad de Sevilla, y que entre 1736 y 1740, llegó a estas tierras.
The image of the Virgin, made of polychrome wood and dressed in new clothes every year, travels 7.5 kilometers on the shoulders of the parishioners, who carry her from her sanctuary in the town of Santa Rosa to the Metropolitan Cathedral of Barquisimeto.
This procession is considered the third largest Marian event in the world, only surpassed by the events held in honor of the Virgin of Guadalupe in Mexico, and the Virgin of Fatima in Portugal; so it usually gathers a large number of attendees, including locals, as well as visitors from all over the country and abroad.
It is estimated that during the route and the various liturgical acts that take place throughout the day, a little more than 3 million people congregate, so that on these dates, the population of the city doubles, reaching the maximum hotel occupancy available in the region.
La imagen de la Virgen, elaborada en madera policromada y vestida con ropajes nuevos cada año; realiza un recorrido de 7,5 kilómetros en hombros de los feligreses, que la trasladan desde su santuario en el poblado de Santa Rosa, hasta la Catedral Metropolitana de Barquisimeto.
Esta procesión está considerada el tercer evento mariano mas grande del mundo, solo superado por los actos que se realizan en honor a la Virgen de Guadalupe en México, y la Virgen de Fátima en Portugal; por lo que suele congregar una numerosa cantidad de asistentes, entre los que cuentan los locales, así como visitantes de todo el país y del extranjero.
Se estima que durante el recorrido y los diversos actos litúrgicos que tienen lugar durante todo el día, se congregan poco mas de 3 millones de personas, por lo que en estas fechas, la población de la ciudad se duplica, alcanzándose el máximo de la ocupación hotelera disponible en la región.
