A Weekend Escape to Ocumare de la Costa: A Personal Connection with the Sea

In the middle of all the work and daily routine, it’s always refreshing to take a moment to stop and enjoy. For me, there’s no better way to recharge than being at the beach. Luckily, just an hour and a half away from my city lies what I consider to be the best coastline in my country — Ocumare de la Costa.

Nestled at the foot of the Coastal Range, Ocumare is surrounded by stunning natural scenery. The road itself offers a beautiful drive with lush green mountains, and once you arrive, the peaceful vibe of the town welcomes you immediately. There are several beaches in the area, but for transportation convenience, we chose to visit El Playón, one of the most popular ones, known for its white sand and crystal-clear waters.

Although I love the beach, I usually avoid going when it’s crowded. That’s why I try to go on days when most people are likely busy — and last Saturday turned out to be perfect. It was almost like I had the whole beach to myself, which felt like a personal gift from nature.

This trip was totally unplanned — the idea came up the night before, and without overthinking it, we packed what we had and left. Sometimes, the best experiences are the spontaneous ones.

I’ve always felt a deep connection to the sea. When I’m at the beach, I rarely leave the water. I find peace in the sound of the waves, in the gentle sway of the sea, and in the vastness of the horizon framed by green mountains. This time, it had been nearly a year since my last visit to the beach, so this escape brought me pure joy and left me feeling full of energy and gratitude.

I hope I don’t have to wait that long again to return — and maybe next time I’ll visit Bahía de Cata, another beautiful spot nearby.
