What's up Hivers? Three days ago I have published situation about my mother in low's garden. It is a matter of regret that most of the farming activities carried out in many areas of Sri Lanka, where floods and landslides are common these days, have been destroyed. It is a fact that we all know that people make a lot of sacrifices and do cultivation work. The aim of the growers is to save the crops from the weather and insect disasters and get a good harvest. But natural calamities cannot be controlled by us. So, even if it rains continuously in the area where I live, it is not so bad that the crops will be destroyed. Due to this rain, there is no problem for those who have done cultivation in the gardens of our living area. Through this content, I am going to make a latest update about the cultivations in the garden done by my parents, wife and myself.

Snake gourd is a vine-like vegetable that produces long pods. It is advisable to boil only half of these as the nutritional value may be destroyed. A few months ago, the vegetable community here introduced how to make a delicious snake gourd salad. Our body can get more nutrition by making it raw as a salad. My mother planted some Snake gourd seeds in the ground in the back garden and two plants have grown and are currently flowering. You can also see that the results are starting to show now. Snake gourd crop is a crop suitable for hot conditions, so the quantity that can be harvested is more by avoiding the rainy season. But since there is not much rain, we can have high hopes for the harvest. Snake gourd can be more productive by growing it into a strong fly. A few pieces of wood about 2 meters high should be made into a rectangular shape and this should be made by making vines. Do not pay too much attention to the shape of the template. When the fruit emerges, it can be protected from insects by covering it with a polythene cover. (as in photo)

The above plant called Ceylon spinach can be used as food and medicine. This plant can also be used for garden decoration as the water falls on the leaves and brings a glow. Mostly eaten by villagers. Although it does not have the taste of vine spinach, the medicinal value is very high. The Ceylon spinach plant, which does not grow much higher, is one of the fastest growing plants in the world. It was found out that this plant has many other names while browsing the internet. This is not only in Sri Lanka but also spread in other countries, so there is curiosity as to why the name Ceylon spinach was used. However, we prepare Ceylon spinach and spinach from our garden.

See how a few kangkun stalks have grown in the ground in our garden, which is a leaf species that can be prepared in a very tasty way, although it lacks medicinal properties. In places where there is a lot of water, these vines spread over the ground. More benefits can be gained by planting well-ripened kangkun stalks in small holes in the ground with water. These are widely used in the preparation of Chinese food. This type of cultivation can be easily cultivated in a garden without any care.

Take a good look at how my father planted a few Pennywort plants by cutting off the top of some empty water bottles and adding sand, soil and decayed leaves inside. Pennywort is sold in the market at a high price, but for our consumption, it is obtained from the garden or the garden of the wife's parents. Therefore, it is possible to eat fresh Pennywort leaves with high nutritional value through cultivation. These empty water bottles have several holes at the bottom to stop the water from seeping. I always like to imbibe the agricultural knowledge of elders so they follow. Pennywort is beneficial for health when made as a green salad or eaten half-boiled.

You may remember that I gave you a rough understanding about ginger cultivation in the previous content. The wife's mother had planted yams in her garden and grown the plants in a bed on the ground. But in my garden ginger plants have been planted on empty fertilizer bags mixed with sand, soil and manure. Although this method does not yield more than planting in the ground, it is more suitable for a garden with less space. There should be proper maintenance here.

Turmeric plants in our garden are grown both in pots and on the ground. Turmeric, which was in short supply in the Sri Lankan market during the last Corona period, is now available to us. The powder made from this turmeric root is used in the kitchen to increase the color and taste of food. With the rains, the vitality of these plants has increased.

After the harvest, the eggplant plants in our garden were destroyed during the last dry season. Therefore, we put new eggplant seeds in the beds and on the ground where there is fertile soil in the hope of another eggplant fruit. There is no greater joy than watching them slowly grow. Soon you will be able to see its harvest.

Many types of chillies which are used to increase the spiciness of food have spread in our garden. It would be a surprise if these green chili pods of different colors, sizes and flavors are not seen in a Sri Lankan diet. But eating too much of these can damage the stomach. Therefore, it is more beneficial to use it only when needed.

Green chillies of different sizes and shapes can be grown in any garden. These small plants can produce fruit at any time of the year. The flowers and leaves of such plants should be protected from snails, caterpillars, ants and lizards. When the leaves grow well, you can protect them from the above animals by spraying a soap foam solution.

These days there are only two big papaya trees. It is not easy to save them from monkeys. Therefore, ripe papaya seeds are planted in another place to get a new papaya crop. You have to wait patiently to get papaya fruit.

Some time ago, flowers were planted in our garden for decoration, but they were removed for the purpose of getting more crops. A few ornamental plants like the above are planted in pots. It is our wish as a family to give more fertility to the garden. See you again with an update on the garden.
