Architectural features seen in Delgoda town in the Western Province.
Hi my fellow Architecture+Design lovers,
How are you guys? I hope you are all in good health. Every time I take a short trip, I am more interested in exploring architectural elements because of the knowledge and experience I can gain from it. In fact, different architectural features can be revealed in every building. Different shapes, materials used, techniques and crafts can be found in it. When you visit the streets near the main city, you can find shops, shopping complexes, etc. in various shapes, with various elements added to them. I had the opportunity to visit the Delgoda area of the Colombo district. I will emphasize here some of the architectural features of several shops that I saw during that visit.
The first thing that caught my attention was a tourist lodge built with creative shapes. Look closely at its finish. Its entrance door was installed on the side. The wall where the name plate is located in front is covered with beautiful stone pieces, adding to its majestic appearance. The building containing the rooms of the resort does not have a high roof, and the wall containing the rooms has a triangular roof covered with tiles. It also has two windows. Palm trees have been planted inside the garden, creating the beauty of a natural environment.
A leading clothing business called Thilakawardhana Textiles was located in Delgoda town. This was not a building belonging to this business location, but an old-style building. Usually, clothing stores cover their buildings with glass to better display the models inside. But this feature is not seen here. The reason is very clear. Thilakawardhana Textiles has become a well-known clothing brand throughout Sri Lanka, so customers know it just by looking at the nameplate. Six arched doors can be seen to enter. A cluster of ornamental plants was planted continuously above the lower floor. The first floor and the second floor also have a different exterior shape.
The horse racing-based gambling establishment in Delgoda called Sporting Times is located in an old building. It is evident that a general construction plan has been followed, as it does not have an attractive architecture.
As we walked further along the Delgoda town, we saw business establishments built in accordance with modern construction plans. The business buildings, which started at the showroom level, were covered with transparent glass without walls. The roofs were covered with asbestos sheets. The stairs to the upper floors were made from the outside.
Delgoda, despite being a developed city, still has an old feel to it, with its unpainted walls. In a way, the mix of modern and old-style buildings is a great way to showcase the architectural elements. Its arched windows are reminiscent of those of a mosque. In proportion, rectangular windows are also installed.
I was able to observe many other old-style buildings that had not been renovated for a long time during this visit. Although I could not see their unique architectural features, modifications are not allowed according to the street line regulations in some cities. The appearance of the electrical company selling red and blue colored lights seems to bring a certain attraction. It is clear that there is a certain attraction in lighting several lights during the day.
During my visit, I came across two more tourist resorts. In fact, the charm of these two resorts is greater with their white-colored surroundings. It is notable that many tourist resorts established in almost every part of Sri Lanka follow the green-friendly concept by spreading ornamental plants around them. Many countries in the world can be seen following this concept today.
As I continued my journey, I came across a mosque, and I noticed two interesting shapes on the wall, so I took a photo of it. I had never seen those two shapes on the outside of a mosque before. You can explore how unique the architectural features are through the content of the contributors on this platform. See you in the future with more beautiful architectural content.
Exploring Delgoda’s architectural diversity sounds like a fascinating experience! The blend of modern and old-style buildings really adds character to the town. Your observations really bring out the uniqueness of Delgoda’s urban landscape.
@yugadi, Firstly thanks your encouraging feedback. Absolutely old and modern mixed architectural features enhances uniqueness to urban areas.
The city has some beautiful designs, the tourist lodge in the first photo is my favorite, I like the windows, they look like a miniature house, the wall covered with stones gives it a country and elegant style.
Greetings.
