Wednesday walk: Visiting Corinth - Something From Ancient Times

I love that spring brings new things: short and long walks barefoot in the grass and sand, a rain of petals that knocks me off balance, a different small-big life, flowery dresses and unheard music.

The world seems brighter and fairer when you fall asleep and wake up with open windows. Only in spring I go crazy out of myself, I want to dance so much, I long for something so much, and I want to be somewhere I've never been before. Our life always leads to meeting spring, which we seem to have known in all our lives before this one and will meet in all our lives after this one.

But the weather, full of sunshine, tempts you to leave the house and go outside, go for a walk by the sea, for long walks with the children, picking wild flowers and nice pebbes. We do it daily if there is no rain, and one day a week, we go for a longer walk to explore some new places.

And this Wednesday it is Corinth. About the city of Corinth itself. This is a relatively new city, rebuilt after the earthquake in 1858, and was shifted closer to the Gulf of Corinth by 3 kilometers. We can say that Corinth means two cities located at a distance of 3 km from each other: Ancient Corinth and Corinth.

This is a large Greek city in terms of population and once even claimed to be the capital, due to its advantageous strategic location and population.

To be honest, we didn’t like the city itself at all. Corinth gave the impression of a dusty and depressed city. There are many closed premises that seem abandoned. Although there is a very beautiful embankment, the beach and restaurants. And there are many branded clothing stores.

In Corinth from 14-30 to 18 hours - siesta. Nobody and nothing is working. The main tourist street - pedestrian street. On its sides there are cafés and shops. There is a little bit of everything: a pastry shop, local fast foods, shoe stores, supermarkets, pharmacies, shops with clothes and beach accessories, etc.

If you hold your backpack on your chest and are not distracted by anyone’s requests, you can quite easily run through the market. When shopping, do not rush to part with your money: bargaining is appropriate, perhaps not as colorful as in Turkey, but essential for the average tourist.

In Corinth, we liked the embankment most. It is small and empty due to the siesta, with the unusual color of the water in the bay.

Small yachts and sailboats rock nearby on the waves... Idyll...

Ancient Corinth is famous primarily for its archaeological exhibitions in the open air and in the museum. The place is not only deeply historical, but also deeply revered by the Greeks: this can be judged by the religious nature of the events we saw on the territory of Ancient Corinth. It is not surprising if you lift the curtain of time a little and look into the past.

It is strange to walk along the destroyed streets, having known the heroes of Troy and the Macedonians, having seen the Apostle Paul, having known the power of the Crusaders and Ottomans...

In the end, we decided to go to the café. The ice cream here was very tasty, and we also ordered a Greek drink - cold coffee frappé. I recommend it to anyone who will be in Greece.

Going home, we stopped at the Corinth Canal, connecting the Aegean and Ionian seas. It makes a grandiose impression. Corinth and the Corinth Canal seem to have existed forever. Corinth - yes, but the canal was built only in 1893. What happened before? There was an isthmus, the narrowest part of Greece, only about 6 kilometers away. And the enterprising inhabitants of this true paradise organized the crossing of ships from the Aegean Sea to the Ionian Sea. After the canal was built, sailors could shorten their journey by about 400 kilometers.
