When planning our vacation to Crete, we initially included a visit to Santorini in our itinerary. The name Santorini may be unfamiliar to some, but I'm sure everyone has seen the image of snow-white walls with a blue roof on a slope overlooking the sea. Personally, I saw this unforgettable photo a long time ago, and ever since, I've longed to visit the place where it was taken.

Seats near the windows are more expensive. There's also a kind of business class, for which you have to pay extra.

So, after a brief delay, we followed. The scene was more than amusing. It reminded me of both sci-fi series where people spend years searching for a new home after the destruction of the Earth and finally find one, and of the biblical flood, when dry land appeared on the horizon. That very moment, when a crowd of people crowded into a huge hangar, and then the ramp began to descend, illuminating the interior with light, and the first settlers took steps toward a new day of life.

We boarded our buses, counted our numbers, and set off along a terrifying mountain road where, in theory, two cars should be able to pass each other. It looked like a camel caravan crossing the desert over dunes. Along the way, we met the guide, learned about the tour program, and after that, the guide began telling us various interesting facts and things about the island.

You won't find much real information or facts about this place online; most of it is foisted on us by tour operators. It's the most visited place in all of Greece. In reality, Fira and Oia aren't exactly ancient cities, but they certainly stand on the sites of older towns. An earthquake in 1956 wiped these towns off the face of the earth. They were rebuilt to their present form. However, it's more of a tourist centre than a residential area. Of course, people are living here, but not many; they mostly live in shops, restaurants, and hotels. All the people live on the opposite, gentler slope.

First, we visited Oia city, but about it I will write a separate post. Then we moved to Fira. As our group drove to Fira, everyone was constantly looking around, hoping to memorise and take away a piece of this stunning beauty.

The guide stopped the bus somewhere in a corner, before reaching Fira. She, of course, asked us not to tell anyone about it, saying it was a deviation from the program and she could be punished, but she was so cool and eager to show us the beautiful views and take us on a short walk. I believed her at first, but considering how many groups were ahead of us, behind us, or heading towards us, I realised it was a marketing ploy.

Gidė sustabdė autobusą kažkur kampe, dar nepasiekusi Tiros. There's a cable car there, and for those looking for something more adventurous, there's a donkey ride. When we reached the city centre, I noticed sculptures of naked people sitting in seemingly unintended places, like the temple facade, for example. Or simply on benches.

At this very spot, our group split up. Some decided to go to the temple, some just to stroll around the city, and some were itching to get to the black beach. Total chaos ensued, in my opinion, although I realised the guide was already accustomed to tourists changing their plans mid-journey. Ultimately, a transfer to the ferry was found without any problem for those who wanted to stay in the city. We'd all be travelling on the same boat anyway.

The journey from Fira took no more than half an hour. The bus stopped at a parking lot, and our group continued along the coast on foot. The guide led us confidently past numerous bars, cafes, and tavernas to a unique and inimitable place. Frankly, we weren't hungry at all, so we left this establishment, checked the departure time, and walked along the beach in search of a place we liked. Opposite each cafe is a small section of beach, which the cafe itself maintains. There are umbrellas, sun loungers, changing rooms, and showers. All these amenities are absolutely free, but you have to order something.

So we chose a place with decent sun loungers and settled in. The waiter didn't keep us waiting, appearing before us with a menu. We chose two cocktails. But they cost about 15 euros per glass - a pleasant surprise. We spent the next hour and a half there. The sand was very hot, so I only reached the water's edge in flip-flops. The entry into the water is shallow and smooth. The water is clean and warm. Overall, we were satisfied.

A little later, our happy and well-fed group appeared on the horizon, and we headed back to the port. Incidentally, we were running late, so the driver tried to speed up, and when we got off the bus, we were forced to run to the ship. After taking our seats, I thought: why should we sit here when we can go out to the balcony? So we went. And I scolded myself for not doing this that morning, because there are some interesting views from there, too.

There are also overnight excursions, the main highlight of which is watching the sunset. I can't judge how much extra money is reasonable for such a dubious pleasure. I was quite satisfied with what I saw. I wouldn't spend a full vacation on Santorini, as for me, it's akin to a vacation in the Maldives, with nowhere to go. A kind of Alcatraz. Santorini is a place where you just need to get gorgeous photos, enjoy the views, and simply experience a snow-white paradise.
