The Menthon Saint Bernard Castle stands on a hill above Lake Annecy in the French Alps. The nearest large town, Annecy, is about 12 km from the castle. From the lake to the castle there is a very picturesque, but rather steep road, with a completely absent pedestrian area.

I must say that this corner of France is very green, and a lot of nature has been preserved in its original form. The road went up, but very smoothly, so it was not difficult to walk up.

And what the air is there. True, in this place you want to fall on the lawn, roll around in the fresh grass and look at the sky.

Here, at one turn, a castle appeared. Young trees are wrapped in a net. At first, we could not understand why this was done. This is what the road to the castle looks like. You can drive here by car, but we went on foot.

Behind the fence were very beautiful ponies and a donkey. Who happily stuck their muzzles out to the fence to be petted. A local donkey who did not eat all the grass in a row, but carefully chose and picked what he ate. We laughed for a long time at this picky donkey. In this castle, even the donkeys act like counts.

And the castle is getting closer with every step we take. The Menton family lives here all winter and after May 1st, they move to Paris for the whole summer, and at that time, the Menton-Saint-Bernard castle is open for visiting.

The view of the lake and mountains is stunning from here! We were so engrossed in our gaze that we almost forgot about the main purpose of our visit!

Having thoroughly enjoyed the panorama, we joined our tour group (you can only enter the castle with a guide every half hour) and began exploring the interior of the castle.

Although the Menton family has produced many famous people, we know perhaps only one - Saint Bernard. The same one after whom the famous breed of rescue dogs was named. He was born in this castle and, according to legend, was carried from here to Aosta by Saint Nicholas right before his own wedding, because he felt that his true calling was to serve the Lord. The castle was named after him.

Saint Bernard de Menthon was born into a wealthy aristocratic family, right in this castle in 1008. He received a very good education in Paris and returned to his native land. After returning, a profitable marriage awaited him and Bernard of Menthon ran away from the altar and his parents' home. He fled to Italy, and there he became a monk. The main activity of Saint Bernard became the foundation of two shelters for pilgrims in the mountains in the Alps. After his death, he was declared a saint. Saint Bernard is the patron saint of all climbers and skiers.

The castle is conveniently located on a two-hundred-meter mountain and was originally wooden, but from the 12th century to the 19th century it was constantly being rebuilt and rebuilt. Fortunately, some rooms have been preserved in their original form. As I saw, the furniture and all the objects inside the room date back to the 13th, 15th, and 16th centuries. And for 1000 years now the castle has stood in its final form.

From May to September, the owners allow tours of some of the rooms while they live in Paris.

But as you may ask, since the castle is residential, how was it possible to preserve the original interior of the castle? And everything is very simple: The castle is so big that the residential and historical rooms are separate. There are 105 rooms in the castle.

Unfortunately, immediately after the castle courtyard we were forbidden to take photos, and they vigilantly watched to make sure that the camera lenses were securely covered. Everyone is filming inside the castle though. I managed to take a few photos too.

And there is definitely something to see inside the castle! After all, it has belonged to the Menton family since its founding, which happened in the 11th century, almost a thousand years ago!

The castle was rebuilt and modified many times, acquiring its final appearance only in the 19th century. Inside, a huge number of antiques, tapestries, and paintings are kept. We were greatly impressed by the old library, filled with ancient maps and manuscripts, and the medieval kitchen, which was left almost untouched.

The Menthon castle is surrounded on all sides by a fence. The castle has a very ideal location, beautiful views open only from it.

France can truly be considered a pearl of medieval castles. And the castles here are like castles, not like palaces. These are the kind of castles I was hoping to see in Italy, but I was disappointed when I saw them there. But in France we had a blast. And when we have a question about where we could go again, to which region of France, we would want to see all the medieval castles of this country.
