Knossos Palace In Crete - Luxury Ruins

Translated from Lithuanian with Google.com
In school, I was most interested in two topics in history class: Ancient Egypt and Ancient Greece. Now, of course, I can't even remember a word about the topic, but I never miss the opportunity to see ancient ruins. The idea to go on a tour to Knossos arose by chance, but it was perfectly timed, because without it, I wouldn't have been able to call my vacation fulfilling.

The drive from Hersonissos, the town where we were staying, wasn't long. Crete isn't a very large island, so everything is relatively close. Especially when you're on a tour in a rental car, you can stop, take photos at your favourite spots, admire the natural beauty, and time flies.
Kelionė automobiliu iš Chersoniso, miesto, kuriame apsistojome, nebuvo ilga. Kreta nėra labai didelė sala, todėl viskas yra gana arti. Ypač kai keliaujate išsinuomotu automobiliu, galite sustoti, nusifotografuoti mėgstamiausiose vietose, pasigrožėti gamtos grožiu, ir laikas prabėgo nepastebimai.>

At 9 a.m., we were already standing in line for tickets in the bright sun. Credit to the archaeological complex's administration: they'd erected a long, wide wooden canopy from the ticket office to the roadway, making the long line in the scorching sun less of a hassle. The line moved quickly because several ticket offices were open at the same time, but looking back, I realised we'd arrived early, as those who arrived later couldn't fit under the canopy.
9 val. ryto jau stovėjome eilėje prie bilietų ryškioje saulėje. Archeologinio komplekso administracijos nuopelnai: jie pastatė ilgą, platų medinį stogelį nuo bilietų kasos iki važiuojamosios dalies, todėl ilga eilė kaitrioje saulėje nebuvo tokia varginanti. Eilė judėjo greitai, nes kelios bilietų kasos dirbo vienu metu, bet atsigręžusi supratau, kad atvykome anksti, nes vėliau atvykę netilpo po stogeliu.>

The site where the ancient city was hidden deep underground was once home to agricultural fields. Numerous figurines, clay pots, amphorae, and rings have been found here since ancient times. Turkey did not permit excavations, so the palace was hidden deep underground.

For many years, the palace lay underground and remained only a legend, but in the late 19th century, scientist Arthur Evans purchased the land where he planned to conduct excavations and, indeed, unearthed not just a palace, but an entire ancient city. Evans attributed the excavated palace to the Minoan civilisation. All the original artefacts discovered are now housed in the Archaeological Museum in Heraklion. For many years, the labyrinth of the Minotaur has intrigued many archaeologists, scientists, and historians. To this day, more questions remain about this historical monument than answers.
Visi rasti originalūs artefaktai dabar saugomi Herakliono archeologijos muziejuje. Daugelį metų Minotauro labirintas intrigavo daugelį archeologų, mokslininkų ir istorikų. Iki šiol apie šį istorinį paminklą lieka daugiau klausimų nei atsakymų.>

The Palace of Knossos is somewhat preserved (or restored) inside, but it's very, very difficult to understand what it looked like from the outside. Someday, like the Phoenix, it will rise from the ashes, but not today.

According to ancient legend, the Palace of Knossos was the oldest skyscraper in the world! Several thousand years ago, it was a modern building in ancient Greece, complete with all the modern conveniences: flush sewerage, ventilation, running water, and lighting. This magnificent building was destroyed by the Santorini volcano. It's difficult for us moderns to imagine what kind of mansion it once was. Today, all we can see on the site of the Palace of Knossos are its remains - low, thick walls and restored columns.

Remember the Minotaur? It's believed that the labyrinth where he roamed was located near the palace, or even within it. There's no definitive evidence. Millions of tourists come every year to admire the legendary palace and soak up the ancient beauty and grandeur of this place. My husband and I were also fortunate enough to visit Greece. Naturally, we couldn't resist visiting the Palace of Knossos.

As we understand, Knossos itself is a complex of buildings grouped around a large courtyard. They are on different levels, connected by corridors and staircases. The famous three pillars have been reconstructed and look quite stately and majestic! During our tour, there were a lot of tourists from different countries, most of whom were in guided groups. Everyone moved around chaotically, which I think is typical for such a place.

First, we round the corner of the palace from above, roughly at the middle level. Then we reach the top, where the symbolic horns of the sacred bull are installed, along with several surviving fragments of some buildings and frescoes. At roughly the same level, we can peer into the room below. We can also estimate the size of the rooms and make some guesses about where these staircases might lead. It's almost like a doll's house: everything in cross-section.

All this variety of columns, passages, staircases, superstructures, and houses upon houses might make some people think of the Minotaur's labyrinth, but I personally associated it with a beehive or perhaps an anthill. However, the most striking distinguishing feature of the Palace of Knossos is the presence of a bathroom. Besides washing themselves within the walls of their home, these ancient comrades also drained water. That's what's amazing.

But that's not all. They didn't want to see a peacefully floating cat, let alone inhale its scent. So they installed a closed sewer system. It's hard to believe that people came up with this idea thousands of years ago, considering some people still dig holes in open fields with a handy stick.

Bet tai dar ne viskas. Jie nenorėjo matyti ramiai plaukiojančios katės, jau nekalbant apie jos kvapo įkvėpimą. Todėl jie įrengė uždarą kanalizacijos sistemą. Sunku patikėti, kad žmonės šią idėją sugalvojo prieš tūkstančius metų, turint omenyje, kad kai kurie žmonės vis dar kasa duobes atviruose laukuose patogia lazda.>

After all the utilities were installed and the rough finishing was completed, the kings invited the most renowned designers of their time. They painted their columns red or black or even indulged in flights of fancy. Naturally, guests arrived at such beauty. And the host of the house received them, seated on such a throne.
Įrengus visas komunalines paslaugas ir baigus grubų apdailą, karaliai pakvietė garsiausius savo laikų dizainerius. Jie nudažė kolonas raudonai arba juodai arba netgi pasidavė fantazijos skrydžiams. Natūralu, kad svečiai atvyko pasigrožėję tokiu grožiu. Ir namų šeimininkas juos priėmė, sėdėdamas tokiame soste.>

It's actually quite nice to see the palace's elements in bright colours, but it's still a bit confusing: what of what we saw can be attributed to its millennia-old history, and what was added after the fire and earthquake 500 years ago.

After we'd walked around the palace, the only thing left to do was take a photo of it with tourists in the background. So we wandered back to our car along a shady alley. And there was another surprise: peacocks grazing freely.
Apvaikščiojus rūmus, teliko juos nufotografuoti turistų fone. Taigi, grįžome prie savo automobilio šešėlių pilna alėja. Ir mūsų laukė dar viena staigmena: laisvai ganėsi povai.>

The Palace of Knossos is a Minoan monument preserved in its best condition. There are two other palaces on Crete, but they resemble ruins. The Palace of Knossos is located near the city of Heraklion. The number of buses in the parking lot immediately indicates how popular this attraction is with tourists.
Knoso rūmai – tai geriausiai išsilaikęs Mino laikų paminklas. Kretoje yra dar du rūmai, tačiau jie primena griuvėsius. Knoso rūmai yra netoli Herakliono miesto. Autobusų skaičius automobilių stovėjimo aikštelėje iš karto rodo, koks populiarus šis objektas tarp turistų.>

This is a legendary place that every self-respecting tourist should visit at least once in their life. Come to Crete, visit the Palace of Knossos, travel, and experience new and interesting things. After all, that's the meaning of life. By travelling, we develop and grow spiritually!
Tai legendinė vieta, kurią kiekvienas save gerbiantis turistas turėtų aplankyti bent kartą gyvenime. Atvykite į Kretą, aplankykite Knoso rūmus, keliaukite ir patirkite naujų bei įdomių dalykų. Juk tai yra gyvenimo prasmė. Keliaudami mes tobulėjame ir augame dvasiškai!>
