Even though it's cold outside now, I want to share my memories of the island of Crete, where the sun shines more often than in my country. I've been to Crete twice. The first time was many years ago when we were on vacation there for a week, and the second time we visited it while living in Greece, just for a weekend.

My beloved Greece is simply made for a pleasant vacation. For me, a lover of antiquity, it is full of interesting places worth visiting, and numerous Christian shrines are scattered throughout the country, including the island of Crete. And, of course, you can have a wonderful beach vacation here. Who doesn't like to spend at least one day sunbathing?

Mano mylima Graikija tiesiog sukurta malonioms atostogoms. Man, senovės mylėtojai, ji pilna įdomių vietų, kurias verta aplankyti, o daugybė krikščioniškų šventovių išsibarstę po visą šalį, įskaitant Kretos salą. Crete has something that I really like: a calm pace of life, a completely simple lifestyle, healthy and delicious food, aromatic wine, incredibly beautiful clear sea, clean air, beautiful nature, mountains, 300 sunny days a year. How could all this not make a person happy? To be honest, every day there gave us endless joy. While visiting Crete, I could not get rid of the feeling of complete happiness and peace. I felt these feelings from the very first moment.

I would say that Crete is neither small nor large. The island has a capital city, Heraklion, which is practically in the center of the island. Historically, the western part of the island is more important, with cities such as Rethymno and Chania. The eastern part of Crete consists of the cities of Agios Nikolaos and Sitia. All other towns and villages are geographically located within the boundaries of these cities. Of course, if I lived here permanently, I would definitely want to visit all the major cities of Crete and the small mountain villages, which I find very attractive.

Sakyčiau, kad Kreta nėra nei maža, nei didelė. Salos sostinė Heraklionas yra praktiškai salos centre. Istoriškai salos vakarinė dalis yra svarbesnė, joje yra tokie miestai kaip Rethymno ir Chania. Rytinėje Kretos dalyje yra Agios Nikolaos ir Sitia miestai. Visi kiti miesteliai ir kaimai geografiškai yra šių miestų ribose. If I had to describe Cretan cuisine, it would be delicious and quite diverse, like all Greek cuisine. I advise you to try cold coffee and local pastries. And it is better to go shopping or eat where local Greeks visit than in tourist areas. There are many taverns on the coast. We used to taste seafood there. Greeks like to treat their guests with delicious snacks. After the meal, they almost always offered us crab or dessert for free. And their food portions were really huge – we often shared a salad bowl with my husband.

Jei turėčiau apibūdinti Kretos virtuvę, sakyčiau, kad ji skani ir gana įvairi, kaip ir visa graikų virtuvė. Patariu paragauti šaltos kavos ir vietinių pyragaičių. O apsipirkti ar pavalgyti geriau eiti ten, kur lankosi vietiniai graikai, o ne turistų lankomose vietose. Pakrantėje yra daug tavernų. Mes dažnai eidavome ten paragauti jūros gėrybių. Graikai mėgsta vaišinti savo svečius skaniais užkandžiais. Po valgio jie beveik visada mums nemokamai pasiūlydavo krabų ar desertų. O šiaip jų maisto porcijos yra tikrai didžiulės – dažnai dalydavomės salotų dubenėlį su vyru.>

We chose Agios Nikolaos with our family, and we really met a lot of families with children there. And the town itself is also beautiful. It is small enough to get lost in it, but also big enough to feel the rhythm of city life. This town is popular with tourists because of the freshwater lake in the city center. There are beaches with sand and small pebbles, but there are many good places where you can enter the sea without large stones, so the beaches are perfect for children. However, sunbeds and umbrellas are not free, you have to pay for them.

Mes su šeima pasirinkome Agios Nikolaos, ir ten tikrai sutikome daug šeimų su vaikais. Pats miestelis taip pat yra gražus. Jis yra pakankamai mažas, kad jame būtų galima pasiklysti, bet ir pakankamai didelis, kad būtų galima pajusti miesto gyvenimo ritmą. As far as I could see, younger tourists, lovers of all kinds of parties and fun on the beach with other young people, choose cities such as Malia and Hersonissos. These two cities are considered noisy and are always full of tourists, especially young English people. There are many bars and nightclubs here, where they can have fun. Therefore, we thought that a vacation with children here would not be pleasant, because loud music, noise and bustle come from every establishment. We only visited these places as tourists. The situation in Hersonissos is a little better, because the main hotels are a little outside the city and have their own beaches. Tourists can walk around the city, have fun, and then return to the peace and quiet of their hotel. However, while touring there, from Malia we visited the Homo Sapiens Museum and the famous Cave of Zeus. For this we had to drive to the Lasithi Mountains, of course, by rented car. And, of course, on winding roads

Kiek teko matyti, jaunesni turistai, mėgstantys įvairius vakarėlius ir linksmybes paplūdimyje su kitais jaunuoliais, renkasi tokius miestus kaip Malia ir Hersonissos. Šie du miestai laikomi triukšmingais ir visada pilni turistų, ypač jaunų anglų. Čia yra daug barų ir naktinių klubų, kur jie gali linksmintis. Todėl manėme, kad atostogos su vaikais čia nebūtų malonios, nes iš kiekvienos įstaigos sklinda garsi muzika, triukšmas ir šurmulys. Mes šias vietas aplankėme tik kaip turistai. While still living in the Peloponnese, we heard from a local Greeks that there is another interesting resort in Crete for those who want a private vacation with comfort – Elounda hotels. Elounda is a popular resort among the rich and famous. Private villas are visible only from the sea, and each of them has its own private beach. Yes, it is very convenient, and such comfort guarantees absolute privacy and isolation. However, high prices for everything are part of this comfort. From Elounda is the closest way to visit the famous island of Spinalonga – of course we also visited it and it left us wonderful memories, but I will definitely write a separate blog about it.

Dar gyvenant Peloponeso pusiasalyje, vietiniai graikai mums papasakojo, kad Kretoje yra dar vienas įdomus kurortas tiems, kurie nori privačių atostogų su komfortu – Elounda viešbučiai. Elounda yra populiarus kurortas tarp turtingųjų ir žinomų žmonių. Privačios vilos matomos tik iš jūros, o kiekviena vila turi savo privatų paplūdimį. Taip, tai labai patogu, o toks komfortas garantuoja absoliučią privatumą ir izoliaciją. Tačiau aukštos kainos už viską yra šio komforto dalis. My favorite way to spend a vacation, and also my family's, is to combine relaxation with exploring the place and visiting the main historical sites. Here in Crete, for this we chose a hotel in the Rethymno-Chania direction, in western Crete. But no matter which part of the island we would have chosen, I believe that Crete would not have disappointed us. On the contrary, Crete filled us with peace and energy, and we returned home with the feeling that we had left an island paradise.

Mano ir mano šeimos mėgstamiausias būdas praleisti atostogas – tai derinti poilsį su vietos tyrinėjimu ir pagrindinių istorinių vietų lankymu. Čia, Kretoje, tam pasirinkome viešbutį Retimno-Chania kryptimi, vakarų Kretoje. Bet nesvarbu, kurią salos dalį būtume pasirinkę, manau, Kreta mūsų nebūtų nuvylusi. Priešingai, Kreta mus pripildė ramybe ir energija, ir mes grįžome namo su jausmu, kad palikome rojaus salą.>

The snow-white island of Santorini, which we also visited, deserves a separate description, but this magical island can also be reached by ferry from Crete. High-speed ferries depart from the ports of Rethymno or Heraklion, and the journey takes only 2-3 hours. However, it should be noted that this trip is expensive.

Sniego baltumo Santorini sala, kurią taip pat aplankėme, nusipelno atskiro aprašymo, tačiau į šią stebuklų salą taip pat galima nuvykti iš Kretos keltu. Greitaeigiai keltai išplaukia iš Retimno arba Herakliono uostų, o kelionė trunka tik 2–3 valandas. Tačiau reikia pasakyti, kad ši kelionė yra brangi.>

In Crete, tour guides like to tell tales that this island is washed by three or even four seas, but in fact it is like a horizontally stretched sausage, washed by the Aegean Sea at the top, and to the south by the Libyan Sea. The Aegean Sea is not as stormy as we saw in Rhodes, but still there are often big waves here. However, this usually does not interfere with swimming. The coast of the Libyan Sea is windier, especially in the evenings, but the wind blows from the mountains, not from the sea. And the sea in these places is quite calm.

Kretos kelionių vadovai mėgsta sekti pasakas, kad šią salą skalauja trys ar net keturios jūros, bet iš tiesų ji yra tarsi horizontaliai ištempta dešrelė, kurią viršuje skalauja Egėjo jūra, o pietuose – Libijos jūra. Egėjo jūra nėra tokia audringa, kokią ją matėme Rode, bet čia vis tiek dažnai būna didelės bangos. Tačiau tai paprastai netrukdo maudytis. Libijos jūros pakrantė yra vėjuotesnė, ypač vakarais, bet vėjas pučia iš kalnų pusės, o ne iš jūros. O jūra šiose vietose yra gana rami.>

The beaches of Crete are very clean and well maintained. Most of them are really suitable for a quiet holiday by the sea. We loved to take a walk along the coast in the evenings, and while walking we came across a few wild beaches. There, tourists lie on their own towels and use their umbrellas, if they have any. These beaches are more open, but getting into the sea is a bit more difficult due to the sea urchins that are often on the bottom. If you ever want to swim on such a beach, it is best to wear protective footwear. We always take these water shoes with us on trips.

Kretos paplūdimiai yra labai švarūs ir gerai prižiūrimi. Dauguma jų tikrai tinka ramiam poilsiui prie jūros. Mums labai patiko vakarais pasivaikščioti palei pakrantę, ir vaikščiodami aptikome keletą laukinių paplūdimių. Ten turistai guli ant savo rankšluosčių ir naudoja skėčius, jei tokius turi. Šie paplūdimiai yra atviresni, bet į jūrą įeiti šiek tiek sunkiau dėl jūros ežių, kurie dažnai yra ant dugno. Jei kada nors norėsite maudytis tokiame paplūdimyje, geriausia avėti apsauginę avalynę. Because we love going on excursions, we rented a car in Crete. The advantage is that on this island, driving is on the right side of the road, as we're accustomed to. There's not a huge amount of traffic. Rental prices are quite reasonable.

Kadangi mums patinka keliauti, Kretoje išsinuomojome automobilį. Privalumas yra tas, kad šioje saloje važiuojama dešiniąja kelio puse, kaip mes esame įpratę. Eismas nėra labai intensyvus. Nuomos kainos yra gana prieinamos.>

On the island of Crete, you can see mountain goats, and in many places they seem to have been domesticated and come to people for food.

Having lived in Greece for a year, I can say that I really liked this country, and after visiting Crete, I liked it even more. The people here are wonderful, the landscapes are charming and picturesque, the food is delicious, the prices of quality goods are reasonable and sometimes even very inexpensive, there are architectural monuments of great historical significance, wonderful beaches, a pleasant climate, great weather, and a clear blue sea...

Kaip pragyvenusi metus laiko Graikijoje, galiu pasakyti, kad man ši šalis labai patiko, o po kelionės į Kretą ji man patiko dar labiau. Čia gyvena nuostabūs žmonės, kraštovaizdžiai jos žavūs ir vaizdingi, maistas skanus, kokybiškų prekių kainos prieinamos, o kartais net labai nebrangios, yra begalė didelės istorinės reikšmės architektūros paminklų, daugybė nuostabių paplūdimių, malonus klimatas, puikus oras ir skaidri mėlyna jūra...>
