One more town in Provence worth mentioning is Cassis.

Having traveled through hectares of lavender fields, inhaled the fragrant air, drank a lot of rosé wine and devoured a lot of foie gras, we said goodbye to the Luberon and taxied to the coast, a suburb of Marseille, Cassis, where we had booked apartments for the night.

Having arrived and found our apartments in Cassis without difficulty, met the hosts and left our belongings in the rooms, we stumbled upon the unbreakable hospitality of the hosts.

Cassis is famous not in itself, but because of one wonderful natural attraction in the vicinity of the city. I will tell you about the famous calanques of Cassis, but now I suggest you take a walk around the city itself.

In general, I don't like seaside cities that are too resort-like. Well, you know that I need the old city, fortresses, churches and all that.

What are the advantages of Cassis? It's a lovely Provence town with historical buildings without large soulless hotels. There is a large sandy beach; I can’t stand pebbles. The town is within walking distance of two important natural attractions of France: the calanques and Cape Canaille.

I’ll tell you about the calanques a little later, but now let’s go for a walk around the city. There are actually no significant attractions in Cassis. But we switched to relaxation and hedonism mode, and decided that there were no plans, routes or points on the map, we were just walking around the city.

The first thing we did was go to the sea to swim. And, I was really glad about our choice of place to stay. From the first steps, the town seemed completely to my taste. The embankment is very lively, but at the same time there are no crowds of tourists. Cassis is not some kind of hole, but it is not a tourist hell either.

The beach was also very pleasing in appearance. I fiercely hate pebble beaches; for me, going into the sea on them is always a fair amount of suffering. Of course, the water seems cleaner and clearer on a pebble bottom, but no, my choice is always the sand. There are currently two main beaches in Cassis: Plage de la Grande Mer and Plage de Bestouan.

I was completely satisfied with the Grand Mer. A minute's walk from the center, toilets, changing rooms, showers. Then we got to the beach de Bestouan. It's a 15-minute walk from the center. The water here is clean, but there are damn pebbles. So I didn't swim there.

After swimming, my husband and I went further to explore Cassis. The most spectacular place in Cassis is undoubtedly its promenade. The local marina is fenced with a special pier where you can walk and admire the views of Cassis from the sea.

There was a nice atmosphere in the city. Everywhere there are groups of men excitedly playing pétanque, but, to be honest, it didn't involve me. You probably have to be a French man to lall in love with this game. But for local flavor and atmosphere, it’s always nice when there is some kind of local peculiarity.

A medieval castle from the 13th century dominates Cassis. We understood that it is privately owned and didn't bother to go up.

Everything is very provincially cute. The city's most famous landmark gave the motto to the city. It is a replica of the Parisian fountain of the 4 Nations. According to urban legend, in 1785 a sailor climbed onto the fountain to better see the holiday in honor of St. John. As a result, he could not resist and collapsed along with the bowl, smashing the entire fountain. So now the fountain is just a copy of the 17th century original. But still, this sight is historical, and it is important for Cassis.

At the end of the 19th century, the castle passed into the hands of the Michelin family. Then he changed owners again, and now the Cassis Castle has a prestigious hotel and restaurant.

As I said earlier, Cassis is primarily famous for its natural attractions. One of them is Cape Canaille. This is not just a local attraction. This is the highest coastal cliff in all of France! The height above sea level is 394 meters. Of course, there are some great cliff top treks from Cassis. But we decided that we were not ready for such tests. However, the main campaign was still ahead, and it turned out to be fascinating.

We rushed on a boat to the calanques of Cassis. Calanques are small, picturesque, secluded coves in the rocks, surrounded by pine trees and other vegetation. You cannot approach them by car, only from the sea or on foot through the windy mountains.I will write a separate post about calanquess.

Cassis was for several centuries under the rule of the Bishop of Marseille. From those times, 4 ancient chapels have been preserved here. Of course, there is also Notre Dame. In addition to Notre Dame and chapels, there is a purely local theme - oratorios. Please don't miss them while walking. Before the French Revolution, Cassis was very religious. At that time, many oratories were built lining the streets of Cassis.

Don't think that Cassis is just a picturesque port and promenade. Inside the city there are those cozy streets that I love so much. Walking around Cassis is very pleasant.

In general, the town fully met my expectations. But it is not very suitable as a base for exploring Provence; after all, it is far from the main Provencal cities. It will be difficult to get out of here without a car. You can come here one day from Marseille for a walk through the calanques.

If you decide to repeat our experience - don’t combine it with lavender, go at least in September - you’ll get much more pleasure and pay less for everything.
