OzarkLife Wanderings ~ May 4, 2023

It’s raining outside right now, but @nomaddreamer and I were lucky enough to tromp through the forest this morning before it started. Good thing, because I’m headed down to the big city to see my parents this weekend and I needed some trees and nature before that!

We sat quietly for about 20 minutes at the Pileated Woodpecker’s tree hoping to get a close-up, but no such luck. I have about 10 pictures of a red-headed blur and even more of treetops in my efforts to photograph him today, so instead of blurs I figured I’d just share his nest. Looks cozy!

He apparently has another Pileated Woodpecker neighbor, as we heard, then spotted, another in a different area of the woods. I couldn’t manage to get his picture either, but I did take time in my attempts to admire the different perspective of watching the sky through the treetops.

If it seems odd to be hoping for a picture of a woodpecker, you have to realize that these guys are very large birds, and are very shy and not often spotted. Plus, they’re just really pretty!

I’m determined to get a good picture of one this year, rather than just the fuzzy long shots I’ve gotten so far. Obviously today was not that day.

The weather forecast for next week is mostly really warm thunderstorms, so I’m hoping there will be some clear times when we can get back out to our trail. It’s always fascinating to see what’s changed in the plants and wildlife over even a short period of time when we get some good storms!
