Prigi Beach - Underrated Fabulous Tropical Beach in East Java

avatar

DSC08929.JPG

" Are you guys sure you want to go to the beach?"

Why is Prigi beach underrated?

DSC08819.JPG

To me, an actual tropical beach would be filled with coconut and palm trees, still virgin and not much of improvement here and there. It's as raw as it gets and not overrun by beach clubs or even shades. I got this experience only the other day when I visited an area called " Trenggalek," a city on the southern part of East Java from Surabaya. The beaches around here are facing the indian ocean but they are not directly to it instead it is actually a bay that leads to the Indian ocean. There are several beaches around this area that offer various water sports activities including paddle boarding, snorkeling, and fishing. I went there just because I want to do snorkeling but I was not lucky.

DSC08806.JPG

From my hometown, the beach is about 4 hours drive which actually makes it about 6 hours drive from the capital of east java, Surabaya. I would say it's really better to stay around this area. The homestays and hotels are decent enough with basic needs and the internet is pretty fast. In fact, I was considering staying around this area for more than a day just because the scenery and overall view were heavenly. I am not huge into surfing but snorkeling, paddle boarding, exploring the little islands around the area would be something I am down to. This is the place if you want to actually get away from urban life. Not to mention, it's not overrun by tourists especially during weekdays.

During this trip, I was very unlucky with the weather. It was raining intermittently and there were also thunderstorms in between. But since I came all the way to enjoy the beach, I made the most of it. Have you ever visited the beach during rain or heavy storms?

What can you do there?

DSC08827.JPG

When we got into the ticketing booth, the staff asked us if we really wanted to go to the beach. " Are you sure? will you not regret it?" but my mom just convinced him that we'd be fine. I mean, previously, my mom and I were walking through thunderstorms just to take pictures. So, what's the difference with this one? We are also already familiar with the beach landscape since I went there a lot as a kid. We know that this won't be too terrible for actual swimming and sitting on the beach even during rain.

DSC08814.JPG

So, we got the ticket which cost 15000 IDR for each person and drove into the hill and down to the beach area. As soon as my eyes saw, there were plenty of traditional wooden boats parked. It got me thinking about some beaches in Thailand. I haven't been there but I just saw it from pictures and it all looked too familiar. There were also no beach clubs, and no umbrellas, it was just the beach. But before I had fun swimming at the beach, we stopped by a seafood stall selling smoked fresh tuna.

DSC08832.JPG

DSC08843.JPG

Seafood is fresh in this area as it's also a fishing town and a famous fishing spot in the province. We got ourselves smoked tuna with spicy soy sauce sambal before going to have more fun at the beach. While the seller was preparing the food, I had a chit chat with her and asked about the fish and stuff around. The woman was also using special wood to give more aroma to the fish and extra smokiness. For a smoked tuna and rice it cost less than $3 which and the size was no joke. It was a whole fish that I rarely had back home as such fish would cost me more than $10 at modern supermarkets and raw. But for $3 at the time, I already got it cooked, fresh, and came with rice. After she finished preparing the food, I left my phone, and my camera with my mom who was staying at the food stall while I walked to the beach area.

DSC08834.JPG

The smoked tuna and it's fogging up my camera.

DSC08833.JPG
the special wood to enhance the aroma from the fish

The beach was all mine, that's what I thought. I couldn't really express the feeling in words being on the beach while the rain was pouring. It was thrilling. I was alone with my thoughts —feeling so overjoyed while I closed my eyes and just felt the rain falling down on me.

DSC08820.JPG

As the rain was about to stop, I started seeing boat owners come to take the water out of their boats. For a split second, I thought of approaching them and offered help but "hey isn't this supposed to be just for relaxing?". So I just stood from a distance and observed what they did. Then from a distance on my left side, I saw a middle aged man walking towards me.

What would you do if a stranger approached you?

" Do you want to ride on a boat?" he asked.
" to where?"
" Wait here" he ran towards his motorbike and back with a sign.

He offered me a service for the boat ride to the snorkeling spot and some other tiny rocks and islands. " is it okay even during times like this and can I get to the snorkeling spot" I asked hesitated because it was still raining and what if there was a huge wave coming at us or some other stuff happening. Not to mention, I was alone and was honestly ready to run.

" yes yes, it's fine. It's actually calm in the middle" he convinced me.
" I give you discount"
" Okay, wait a moment. I have to call my mom"

mac'sproperty.jpg

As you can see it started raining again and the water got into my camera lens

Eventually, once I was with my mom, he increased the price even to the snorkeling spot. Although, I also thought twice since it wasn't a great time to do that. So, we just opt for the boat ride around some tiny islands and seeing rocks as we both never did that in the past, especially on this beach.

DSC08848.JPG

I uploaded this on youtube and it's not a long clip, just enough to give you a picture about the boat ride.

The man told us that boat belongs to a famous indonesian celebrity

DSC08922.JPG

Looking back, it was like having a private boat ride. We asked around about the place but it seemed like he didn't speak Indonesian well nor even javanese. At some point, I think he couldn't even hear us properly during the boat ride. Also, to be fair, I was really skeptical with the price. " is he going to just abandon us in the middle of floating house or something?" but apparently it was all covered and we got back safely. The man also told us to take as many pictures as we like. Finally, at the end of the trip, he thanked us and said, " I will give you a ride for free if you bring more people next time. Just remember our boat name". We just smiled and left while I took pictures of the boats and also wondered if the people around here spoke a different javanese dialect or something since they hardly understood me and my mom or is it because we are coming off too friendly and asking too much?

DSC08923.JPG

DSC08905.JPG

DSC08896.JPG

After getting off the boat, my mom and I explored the rocky part of the beach. Apparently, I found some trash here and there. " What's wrong with people?!" I got angry and picked up the trash I found and put them where they belong. These plastics should not be here and despite the sign, some ignorant people still do it.

DSC08915.JPG

DSC08916.JPG

As we were about to go back, The water was also moving away and I started seeing rocks and more seaweed. Not to mention, the rain stopped too. Well, maybe next time for that snorkeling trip.

DSC08931.JPG

DSC08918.JPG

Fun fact : I did this trip while I hadn't sleep for over 28 hours. I was wide awake and didn't feel tired despite everything I did on this trip. Even now after waking up, everything felt surreal. But yeah, going on a trip without sleeping isn't something I recommend but often guilty of.

See you in my next one!

I love that you were able to enjoy your boat trip Mac, for me the beach is literally less than 10 minutes away, but I don't know how to swim and I don't like very much the beach 🥲, but I do like to sit on the sand and watch the sea, it's relaxing; however being in the deep sea scares me, let alone going by boat or snorkeling or diving.

When I was a little girl I almost drowned several times, and even as a teenager too, you'd be surprised how long I've gone without swimming at a beach 🙃, but I love the scenery, the breeze and the sound of the waves.

When I went to college I had to travel by ferry every week and just approaching the railings gave me terror, the ocean is too huge, so huge that it's scary what's down there, On the other hand I have no problem traveling by plane, I enjoy that, inconsistency right? 😅

You really are risky, with that rain I wouldn't get on that boat not even if they paid me to do it hehehehe I accept it! I'm a coward, not like you and even less without having slept at all.

Beautiful photos of the post I hope you continue to have a good time on your trip @macchiata 🤗💞

wait what? if it's literally 10 minutes I would go daily just to sit there. You're totally lucky on that front. I used to live nearby the beach but fear of tsunami just kept me away from it. I am sorry you had drowning experiences, it must be very traumatic for you that you don't swim at the beach. I mean, I am pretty scared but I was like, fuck it haha. I am also trying to get accustomed as I only strictly swim at the swimming pool. 😂 was the boat looks pretty scary? I've been told that the boat looks like it's going to flip at any moment haha

Jajajaj I feel sorry I know, so you can see the level of fear, in your previous post the last photo where a swing on the beach with the rain, I thought it was taken from a horror movie that photo hahahaha I swear! only I did not comment because I felt sorry, but it is not the photo, the photo is probably beautiful, it's me and my fear that sees it that way.

I will show you a picture of the beaches when I go to take pictures, hopefully soon, I live on an island in Venezuela, it's called Margarita Island and humbly it's beautiful 🥰 although I'm afraid of it 🙃.

I understand about tsunamis here thanks to the universe we haven't had that, and I hope we never have 😥😥, but I know over there if they do have dangerous seasons, so it's better to be away and that you have moved.

I live 10 minutes away from the beach but by car, it should be emphasized, walking would take me a long time 😅😅.

Keep having fun @macchiata 🤗

I have several photos of that which will available in my next post. I think by now everyone is tired of my travel post, so I'll just do that next week or something😂 Please do! since I follow you I should be seeing your pictures soon!

I don't think in your country there would be tsunami or similar unlike in mine where it's called the ring of fire and tsunami can be triggered by a huge earthquake either on land or from the sea. So, looking forward to your future beach time!

🤣 yeah, it was a bit creepy but thankfully he wasn't a bad person. I am hoping to go back next time when the weather is nice but for that, maybe next year or something. Thanks for checking out!

I've really been wanting to do that although parts of me a bit scared but it's fun, isn't it? 😅 in the past I did it with a guide but this time, I want to experience alone without a guide.

Indeed it is, truly a magical feeling when you are swimming with the fish and saw the magical view underneath the ocean. Also scary but it's worth it.

I enjoyed reading as if I was with you on that trip. Maybe I am your mom? 😂

Kidding aside, was it raining so hard? The waves were not as strong as what I have experienced before traveling on a small boat while there was a thunderstorm. But still, next time, please be careful. 😅
It was an adventure though. I hope your mom was okay the entire time.

The smoked tuna looks so tasty! Now I want to eat some seafood. Seafood is really best enjoyed in places like this because it's cheaper!

Next time, I think you should sleep before traveling. 😅

hahaha maybe you're my "ghost" mom that hovers around me 😂

It was raining intermittently. Sometimes it's drizzle but sometimes it's straight up storms and it was pretty insane how the weather and the rain there was. What's even crazier was, the guy didn't offer us life jacket 😂 so yeah it was quite adventurous and apparently they think it's fine boating during storms without life jacket.

I rarely sleep during traveling because I am often very excited and just over-researching things to be prepared. I tried not to but like you see, now due to not researching the weather, I got there when it's raining 😅

Your “over-researching” did not include the weather 😂
I think locals who have those kinds of boats don’t think much about life jackets but I hope they have it in their boat 😅 They’re so used to sailing in the storm already I think.
It’s fun experience 😂

I am also like that, because of too much excitement it’s hard to sleep. But still you should 😅

This is the advantage of a waterproof camera. I had mine in my pocket in the middle of a river the other day. No worries when it got soaked.

Yea, and they're not as powerful and have limited add-ons. Convenient though.

This is really a natural beach, not a virgin beach. Because a lot of human activity there. Especially the fishermen who depend their lives on the contents of the ocean.
But fishermen are part of the natural coast. They always guard their sea. The sea is their hope.

It's nice to see them go out to sea with hopeful faces and come back with smiles on their lips.
Then they lined up their boats neatly. Your photo is cool about that boat object.

I am also somewhat similar to you, I am always looking for a beach that is quiet and rarely visited. It really becomes a very natural beach and I would also always avoid the holiday season. It's no longer a beach. but turned into a sea of people.

Have a nice trip

Thank you! it's hard to find a beach that's not crowded these days. I like empty beach like that and travel during weekday as it's definitely more empty.

Travel during weekday as it's definitely more empty.

That is the best and most realistic choice of time to get to beaches or tourist spots that are not crowded with visitors.
I will follow your path.

Wow, it's been a really adventurous day. I also think you're overdoing the whole not sleeping thing. You must have a sleep problem. I used to have it a lot. I used to have a hard time remembering things I did without sleeping so much after I fell asleep and woke up. I think my brain was already asleep lol.

I generally have sleep problems and it's not easy to fix it especially when I am at my parents. But I sleep just fine when I live alone. There's also a lot of noise pollution around me at the moment and the presence of others somehow bothers me and makes me not able to sleep well. 😂

Sorry to hear that :( . I had sleeping problem too. Especially when it is too hot, I can't sleep. I'm trying but it is not easy. Just a secret between us, I solved that problem by drinking a beer before go to bed 🤣

I finally got to go sailing for the first time in Argentina and it was so much fun. I've always wanted to go kayaking and just paddle around too. Definitely a little jealous you got to do this one. Looks awesome.

paddle boarding and snorkeling next time! It was raining, nothing to be jealous of and I sort of wished it wouldn't. Seems like I am going back there soon just to swim again. 😄
