Green space and fancy coffee shop in Favela-like neighborhood, Estuary Cafe

While the river where the cafe is located considered as a slum or favela-like area, hidden among its little alleyways, there’s a green space and refined coffee shop with tropical interior and exterior. Its location is also close to the Engineering faculty of UGM and a newly built apartment in the city.

It’s a little strange to see such a fancy coffee shop in the neighborhood but after entering the compound where nice cars are parked, I was intrigued; What makes this place stand out?

Even though located in alleyways, their parking space is quite huge and can accommodate more than 10 cars. It also has spacious motorbike parking space and from the front, it looks like a fancy diner/bistro where you have to dress up just to enter the place.

Being under dressed and with my backpack, I was hesitant. After entering the place, apparently its patrons are just like me, with their backpack and potentially to be students from universities nearby.

They have an open bar setting and a cashier with dessert and pastries are displayed on the refrigerator next to it. Not only serving coffee and frappe, they also serve meals and various snacks that are not commonly found around cafes and coffee shops here.

I was feeling uncomfortable on the first floor but I walked around and found many more options from indoor, semi indoor, to outdoor with views of buildings and greenery along the river. If you love taking pictures, this is the perfect coffee shop to go.

This cafe not only exudes premium price, the bathroom is definitely matching the vibe. It was really clean and one of the cleanest bathrooms in a cafe I’ve ever visited in this city and the whole province. It was well-thought out and designed. Oh, don’t worry, it was only the vibe that’s premium but the actual price of its menu is quite reasonable for a mid-high end place in town.

I remember going to a similar cafe in Bali and this feels like a clone of it. While the cafe in Bali is twice and thrice more expensive, this one is the cheaper version but without being cheap.

Anyway, after ordering honey latte and one of their crostini, I looked for a place where I could feel a little more comfortable. Apparently, the hidden gem for those who work from the cafe is the second floor.

They have crescent shape table with each every few cm is equipped with plugs. There are also many tables and the temperature was kept at cool level in which despite many patrons were there, it was still cold.

The crostini was quite underwhelming. While the portion was generous and the topping was okay, I should have gone with the classic garlic crostini that I prefer than this bolognese crostini.

Their honey latte was so-so but I can tell they use good quality coffee because the taste of coffee wasn’t overpowered by the milk. They also have the roastery just next to the main compound where they source their coffee especially for the slow bar. The price was really reasonable and I was honestly surprised since a few co-working and cafes with inferior quality were a lot more expensive than this place.

It was really comfortable working from the place with big windows and especially the outside that has greenery views and lively feathery friends. There are also books that can be read on the spot. It’s why this place is really cozy and a perfect spot to come back for a little work from a cafe session.

I also ended up staying there for more than 2 hours before having to go back to my place before rain pours down again.Perhaps this is the appeal and why a lot of young urban professionals, even families, organize their meeting, hangout or simply chit chat here. That’s because the place not only has a nice view and spots that accommodate different needs but also its cozy atmosphere when you find the right spot.

While this city is relatively small, every month there’s always a new cafe being built. I am sure that in the future, every building in this city will turn into a cafe or coffee shop haha.

And while the premium location and buildings are already occupied, perhaps it was why, even located in a favela’s like neighborhood, as long as the place is nicely decorated with nice interior and spacious parking space as well as good pricing, people would still come. To me going there and into the alleyway was quite an interesting experience considering the traffic and chaos, just outside the main street. But once getting into that space, it was another world.

Those aren't most comfortable but they definitely look aesthetic and one of the best spots at the place :D

Mac how nice that place looks, it's very spacious, I always love how they mix nature with modernity in that kind of architecture, I loved the internal trees. Too bad the coffee was not that good, but for the experience I would make the effort because it looks very nice.

It is! I hope their coffee could be better since the roastery is just next to their building. They're definitely selling the place more than their coffee.

Aesthetic place but I wish you had a better tasting experience. Do you know the brand of specialty coffee they had?
