Üretken sanat - Generative Art [Tr - En]

Selamlar arkadaşlar,
Daha önce Vera Molnar'a ithafen bir yazı yazmıştım. Bu yazıda Vera'nın kim olduğunun yanı sıra ufak bir kodlama örneği de paylaşmıştım. Belli bir konsept etrafında her defasında benzersiz çıktılar elde edebildiğim basit bir sistemi tanıtmıştım. Bu yazımda ise üretken sanata dair bir tanım etrafında kendi ifadelerimi ve çalışmalarımı paylaşmak istiyorum.

Yakın geçmişte ortaya çıkan ve blok zincir üzerinde NFT terimiyle anılan görsel çalışmalar çoğu kişi gibi benim de ilgimi çekiyor. Genel olarak bir insanın klasik şekilde hayal gücü ve el becerisini kullanarak ürettiği çizimler gerçekten harika ama bunun yanında bir de jeneratif ya da generative veya da üretken sanat diye tabir edilen bir akım daha var. Yazımın başlığından da görebileceğiniz üzere ben "üretken" kelimesini tercih ediyorum. Burada sonuçlar, el beceresi ile fiziksel bir mecra yerine mesela yazılan algoritmalar yardımıyla bir ekranda sergileniyor. Olasılıklar çok tabi, ekran yerine bir tuval üzerine robotik kollar yardımı ile de çalışma yapılabilir. Ya da sadece doğal süreçler kullanılarak oluşturulan eserler de var. Ancak günümüzde daha çok bir yazılım algoritmasının dahil olduğu sistemler anlaşılıyor, kanımca.

Yazımın kapak resmi bana aittir. Birkaç zaman önce yine bir aktivite için hazırladığım bir çalışma. Aslında statik bir resim değil, orijinal halinde hareketli olan renkler sabit şekilde duran siyah-beyaz alanlar üzerinde geziniyor. Sanki bir çıkış arıyor. İsmini de bu yüzden "Tutsak Gökkuşağı" koymuştum. Renklerin oluşturduğu sıvı şeklindeki hareket rastgele üretilen değerler ile oluşturuluyor. Şimdi tekrar bakınca sanki göze de benziyormuş :) İzlemek isterseniz bu linki takip ederek ulaşabilirsiniz. Çevrim içi sergilemede küçük bir kanvas üzerinde görüntülemeyi seçtim, çünkü arka planda çok fazla piksel işlemi var. Eğer kullandığınız sistem görece yavaş ise biraz kasma problemi olacaktır.

Konuya geri dönersek, üretken sanat akımını genel hatları ile tanımlayan aşağıdaki alıntıyı paylaşmak isterim:

Burada belli kuralları şart koşan ve sürecin içerisinde rastgelelik kavramını da bulunduran bir sistem kurmak gerektiğini anlıyorum. Rastgelelik olmazsa sonuç fraktallara dönüşebilir zaten. Tabi bir de bu sistem, bedenimize göre, doğası itibari ile harici bir sistem olacaktır.

Harici dedim ama aklıma bir fikir geldi. Hani "psychedelic" diye tabir edilen çizimler vardır. Bilemem insanlar gerçekten bir uyuşturucu madde altında mı yapıyor o çizimleri. Ama bu da üretken sanat olarak tanımlanamaz mı? Kurallar bilinçaltının dikteleri olabilir. Rastlantısallık ise beyin kimyasının bozulması ile ne zaman hangi nörotransmiterın ne kadar salım yapacağının dengesizleşmesi ile elde edilebilir sanki. Geriye harici bir mekanizma kalıyor. Bu şart da yerine getiriliyor aslında, sonuçta sayko bir anda kim kendinde olabilir ki :)

Öte yandan tüm bu yaratım süreci, özellikle dijital versiyonu, sanki kuralların ışığında gözlem yapmak gibi bir şey. Ya da kuralları kendimin koyduğu mini, mikro, hatta nano da değil piko, olmadı femto boyutundaki bir dünyada, işler nasıl da ahenkle akıyor diye düşünebilmek için o kuralları sıraya dizip dizip bir sürü denemeler yapmaya benziyor. Bu işin daha güncel versiyonlarında yapay zeka desteği de bulunuyor. Bu konuya şimdilik girmek istemiyorum. Ama bir metafor eklemeden de duramayacağım; tüm bu uğraşlar insanoğlunun kadim Tanrı parçacığını belki de kendi ruhunda arama dürtüsünün farklı tezahürüdür. Daha akademik ifade edersem önemli olan süreç ve sürecin tasarımı...

İnternet üzerinde gerek sosyal medya platformlarında gerekse özel galeriler üzerinde birçok üretken sanat örneğine rastlayabilirsiniz. Yazının başında NFT kavramı ile giriş yaptığım için size fxhash platformunu ziyaret etmenizi tavsiye ederim. Tezos üzerinde çalışan kaliteli bir yer. Görselleri burada listelemenin ne kadar etik olduğunu kestiremiyorum. Ama en azından bir göz atarsanız söylemeye çalıştıklarım zihninizde daha iyi canlanır.

Son olarak doğal süreçlerin de bu sanat akımında rol oynayabileceğini göstermek için çektiğim duman ve su damlacığı fotoğraflarını aşağıda paylaşmak istedim. Vurgulamak istediğim ise en ufak hava akımının bile sonuç üzerindeki etkisinin çok büyük olduğu. Tam bir kaos ve insana kendini sorgulatıyor bazen.

Su damlacıklarını fotoğraflarken elektronik sigaralarda da kullanılan ve sıvıyı tanecik haline getiren bir mekanizma kullandım. Daha doğrusu bu mekanizmaya sahip ev tipi dekoratif bir cihaz kullandım. Arka taraftan uygun bir açı ile gelen ışık sayesinde tanecikler güzel görüntüler oluşturdu.

Aşağıda da duman ya da sis şeklinde oluşan izler bulunmaktadır. Kullandığım ekipman yukarıdaki süreçte kullanılanlar ile aynı, tek fark aşağıdaki görüntüler için uzun pozlama yaptım.

Tam burada yine bir hissiyat bastı; yazılım ile üretirken rastlantıları dahi kontrol ederek kendimi ne kadar büyük ve yaratıcı gördüysem, doğal süreç karşısında da o kadar kendimi önemsiz ve küçük gördüm...

Kullandığım üsluptan da anlaşılacağı üzere bu yazı akademik ya da eğitim amaçlı değildi. Konuyu zihnimde canlandığı şekilde serbestçe ifade etmek istedim. Ancak yüzeysel anlatımım nedeni ile üretken sanat üzerine negatif fikirlerin oluşmasını da hiç istemem. Previously, I wrote an article dedicated to Vera Molnar. In that article, I shared who Vera was, as well as a small coding example. I introduced a simple system where I was able to achieve unique outputs each time, around a certain concept. In this article, I would like to share my feelings and works, related to one of the definition of generative art.

Like many others, I am interested to the emergence of visual art on the blockchain, which is also referred to by the term NFT. In general, the drawings produced by a person using his/her imagination and dexterity in the classical way are really great, but there is also a movement called generative art. The outputs are displayed on a screen with the help of, for example, written algorithms instead of a human effort on a canvas. The possibilities are many, of course. Instead of a screen, work can be done on a canvas with the help of robotic arms. Or there are works created using only natural processes. However, today, in my opinion, systems involving a software algorithm are more commonly understood.

The cover image of my article belongs to me. It is a work I prepared for an activity some time ago. In the original version, it is not a static picture. The colors are hovering over the fixed black and white areas. It is as if the colors are looking for an exit. That's why I named it "Trapped Rainbow". The fluid movement of the colors is created by randomly generated values. Now that I look at it again, it also looks like an eye :) If you want to see it in action, you can follow this link. For the online display, I chose to display it on a small canvas because there is a lot of pixel processing in the background. If the system you are using is relatively slow, there will be a little bit of browser slow down.

Coming back to the subject, I would like to share the following quote that defines the generative art movement in general terms:

... However, Boden and Edmonds (2009) state that rule-based analog productions can also be called generative art, that the use of computers is not compulsory in generative art, and that the key element of this art form is "rules".

... it can be said that the elements that make his works accepted as generative art are the system he uses, the combinational use of precise rules, the randomly drawn numbers from the box that determine the production steps and the order of the work.

I understand that it is necessary to establish a system that stipulates certain rules and includes the concept of randomness in the process. Without randomness, the result may diverge to fractals, I gusess. Of course, this system will be external in nature, according to our body.

I said external, but I have an idea. You know, there are drawings called "psychedelic". I don't know if people really make those drawings under the influence of drugs. But can't this also be defined as generative art? The rules could be dictates of the subconscious mind. Randomness seems to be achieved by destabilizing the brain chemistry by altering when and which neurotransmitter releases how much. Only an external mechanism needed then. In fact, this condition is also fulfilled, after all, who can behave as his or her self in a psychotic moment :)

On the other hand, this whole creative process, especially the digital version, is like making observations in the light of rules. I would also describe it as making the rules myself in a mini, micro, or may be not even nano, pico but femto sized world. And then lining these rules up and doing a lot of experiments to see how things flow harmoniously. Additionally, the more recent versions of this art movement also have artificial intelligence support. I don't want to go into this for now, but let me add a metaphor here: perhaps all these endeavors are different manifestations of the urge of human beings to search for the famous God Particle, in their own souls. In more academic terms, what matters is the process and the design of the process...

There are many examples of generative art on the internet, both on social media platforms and in private galleries. Since I referred to the concept of NFT at the beginning of the article, I recommend you to visit the fxhash platform. It is a great place built on Tezos. I don't know how ethical it is to list the images here, but if you at least take a look, you will better visualize what I am trying to say.

Finally, I wanted to share below the photographs of smoke and water droplets that I took to show that natural processes can also play a role in this art movement. What I want to emphasize is that even the smallest air flow has a great effect on the result. It's chaos and makes you question yourself sometimes.

While photographing the water droplets, I used a mechanism used in electronic cigarettes that turns the liquid into particles. More precisely, I used a household decorative device which has this mechanism built in. I think they call it atomiser. Thanks to the light coming from the back at an appropriate angle, the particles created beautiful images.

Below are traces of smoke or fog. The equipment I used is the same as in the process above, except that I used long exposure for the same water drops.

Right here, again a feeling struck me; the more I saw myself as great and creative by controlling even the randomness while producing with software, the more I saw myself as insignificant and small in the face of the natural process...

As can be understood from the sound of my writing, this post was not intended to be academic or educational. I wanted to freely express the subject as I feel. However, I do not want to create negative ideas about generative art because of my superficial expression.
