Portulaca grandiflora
Over the last year, I spent some time photographing a plant that grows easily at the home — Portulaca grandiflora, also called Moss Rose. I like this plant because it is small, colorful, and very strong.
For this photo series, I wanted to show the plant in a different way. Not just like how I see it under the sun, but with more color and style. So I decided to use some light setups. I attached color filters in front of the speed-lights with blue, red, and yellow colors.
I used our living room as a studio and some basic tools I already had. I changed the angles and light direction to create more drama in the photos. It was fun to see how each bud, flower, and seed pod changed character under different light colors.
One interesting thing I learned is that this plant is actually a succulent. That means it stores water in its leaves. No wonder it can survive in difficult conditions! Also, it’s a fast grower and can spread quickly, making it great for filling empty pots in front of the house windows.
Taking these photos helped me look at something common with new eyes. I enjoyed combining technical lighting with the natural shapes of the plant. I hope the pictures show that even a small garden plant can become something magical with the right light.
All the best…
