Edge of departure

I took these five photos in a very short moment under the heavy rain. But inside that moment I found this beautiful wasp. It’s wings were wet and it couldn’t fly away, and I decided to visually explore this beauty.

As you may know when shooting macro, time feels different. Small movements become big events. One step of the insect, one antenna move, suddenly the whole frame changes.

What attracted me first was the contrast. The aggressive black and yellow body against the soft, almost fragile pink petals. The flower looks appealing, tempting and calm, while the wasp looks sharp and alert. I felt like I was watching a quiet tension. Not a fight, but the bee was nervous I guess, since it could not fly.

Some frames are tight, focusing on the head and eyes. I like how the eyes reflect light and give a soft shining. It almost looks like the wasp knows it is being watched. I wonder how did I look like through it’s vision. In other frames wider look is present, letting the wings and body lines appear. Those thin legs holding on the petal look delicate, even though we usually think of wasps as dangerous.

The dark background was not planned, it happens by the use of flash, but it helped a lot. It isolated the subject and removed any distraction. The pink became stronger, more emotional. For me this series is not about biology or insects. It is more about form, color, and moment. About how something small can fill the whole frame and demand attention.

When I finished shooting, the wasp was still walking on the flower here and there. I am truly thankful to bee’s patience for these five photos. This is a short story of a wet bee trying to find a suitable edge of departure.

All the best…

Hi @equipodelta, thanks for reaching out and for the praise. First I thought this is a kind of scam, I was not aware of redditposh before. I had a chance to look into it and now I think it is no harm, it may also attract people to join Hive.
