LIKE THE WONDERFUL SOLITUDE OF A LUNAR LANDSCAPE - A tour in the surroundings of Cabo de Gata

Auf unserer (Rück-)Reise (Richtung Schweiz) haben meine Freundin und ich irgendwo an der spanischen Mittelmeerküste am Rande der Gewächshäuser von Almeria (Spanien), woher die Tomaten der Supermärkte Europas kommen, und dem Testgelände "Centro de Experiencias Michelin Almería", wo Michelin auf 100km vertraulichen Teststrecken ihre Autoreifen unter den verschiedensten Bedingungen testen, die Umgebung von Cabo de Gata und den dazugehörigen Naturpark "Cabo de Gata-Níjar” erkundet.

On our (return) journey (towards Switzerland) my girlfriend and I stopped somewhere on the Spanish Mediterranean coast at the edge of the greenhouses of Almeria (Spain), where the tomatoes of Europe's supermarkets come from, and the "Centro de Experiencias Michelin Almería" test site, where Michelin test their car tyres in a wide variety of conditions on 100km of confidential test tracks, we explored the surroundings of Cabo de Gata and the associated natural park "Cabo de Gata-Níjar".

En nuestro viaje (de vuelta) (hacia Suiza) mi novia y yo nos detuvimos en algún lugar de la costa mediterránea española, al borde de los invernaderos de Almería (España), de donde proceden los tomates de los supermercados europeos, y el centro de pruebas "Centro de Experiencias Michelin Almería", donde Michelin prueba sus neumáticos de coche en una gran variedad de condiciones en 100 km de pistas de pruebas confidenciales, exploramos los alrededores de Cabo de Gata y el parque natural asociado "Cabo de Gata-Níjar".

Die Region um den Naturpark "Cabo de Gata-Níjar" zählt zu den trockensten Gegenden Spaniens und Europas. Die zerklüftete Mittelmeerküste wurde von längst erloschenen vulkanischen Aktivitäten geprägt und geformt, und ist darum geologisch und mineralisch sehr interessant. Noch heute sind die längst erstarrten Lavaströme ersichtlich. Mit der spärlichen Vegetation und der Halbwüstenflora gleicht die Umgebung von Cabo de gata einer Sahara-Randzone oder einer Mondlandschaft. In einem Teil des Naturparks haben bereits die Römer an der Costa de Almería Salz-Fabriken/Salinen angelegt.

The region around the nature park "Cabo de Gata-Níjar" is one of the driest areas in Spain and Europe. The rugged Mediterranean coast was shaped and formed by long extinct volcanic activities and is therefore very interesting geologically and mineralistically. The long-solidified lava flows are still visible today. With its sparse vegetation and semi-desert flora, the surroundings of Cabo de gata resemble a Sahara fringe zone or a lunar landscape. In one part of the natural park, the Romans already established salt factories/saltworks on the Costa de Almería.

La región que rodea el parque natural "Cabo de Gata-Níjar" es una de las zonas más secas de España y Europa. La escarpada costa mediterránea fue moldeada y formada por actividades volcánicas extinguidas hace mucho tiempo, por lo que es muy interesante desde el punto de vista geológico y mineral. Las coladas de lava, largamente consolidadas, siguen siendo visibles hoy en día. Con su escasa vegetación y su flora semidesértica, los alrededores de Cabo de gata se asemejan a una zona marginal del Sáhara o a un paisaje lunar. En una parte del parque natural, los romanos ya establecieron fábricas/salinas en la Costa de Almería.

Als wir Anfang Februar 2023 in der Umgebung unterwegs waren, war Nebensaison und die Gegend fast menschenleer. Nur die einheimische Bevölkerung und einige spazierende Camper, vorwiegend aus Nordeuropa, kreuzten unseren Weg. Auch wir erkundeten zu Fuss die zerklüfteten Klippen um den Leuchtturm Faro de Cabo de gata oder fuhren mit unserem kleinen Büschen zu entlegenen Stränden, wo sich nur wenige Kite-Surfer im kühlen und rauhen Mittelmeer mit dem bissigen Wind spielten.

When we were travelling in the area in early February 2023, it was low season and the area was almost deserted. Only the local population and a few strolling campers, mainly from northern Europe, crossed our path. We too explored the rugged cliffs around the Faro de Cabo de gata lighthouse on foot or drove our small bushes to remote beaches where only a few kite surfers played with the biting wind in the cool and rough Mediterranean.

Cuando viajamos por la zona a principios de febrero de 2023, era temporada baja y la zona estaba casi desierta. Sólo la población local y unos pocos campistas paseantes, principalmente del norte de Europa, se cruzaban en nuestro camino. Nosotros también exploramos a pie los escarpados acantilados que rodean el Faro de Cabo de gata o condujimos nuestras pequeñas busetas hasta playas remotas donde sólo unos pocos kitesurfistas jugaban con el viento cortante en el fresco y áspero Mediterráneo.

Als Unterkunft haben wir ein besonderes Schmuckstück entdeckt. Direkt neben den letzten kommerziellen Gewächshäuser wurde ein alte Hütte restauriert und in drei Studios umfunktioniert. Dabei wurde die Originalstruktur renoviert und nachgebaut, und geheizt wurde mit einem Holzofen. Da ich im Winter ziemlich verwöhnt von gut funktionierende, elektronischen Heizungen, mit und ohne fossile Brennstoffe, bin, freue ich mich jedesmal, wenn ich selber Feuer mit Holz machen kann. Ein weitere Pluspunkt war der Unterkunft eigene Bio-Garten, wo wir uns frei bedienen könnten. Zwar gab es gerade das Gemüse, dass gerade reif war, dich wir habe uns mehrmals eine grosse Pfanne mit Brokkoli, Rosenkohl und anderem Blattgemüse gekocht.

For accommodation we discovered a special gem. Right next to the last commercial greenhouses, an old hut was restored and converted into three studios. The original structure was renovated and recreated, and heating was provided by a wood-burning stove. As I am quite spoiled by well-functioning electronic heaters in winter, with and without fossil fuels, I am always happy when I can make my own fire with wood. Another plus point was the accommodation in our own organic garden, where we could help ourselves freely. Although the vegetables were just ripe, we cooked a big pan of broccoli, Brussels sprouts and other leafy vegetables several times.

Para alojarnos descubrimos una joya especial. Justo al lado de los últimos invernaderos comerciales, se restauró una antigua cabaña y se convirtió en tres estudios. Se renovó y recreó la estructura original, y la calefacción se proporcionó con una estufa de leña. Como en invierno estoy bastante mimado por los calefactores electrónicos que funcionan bien, con y sin combustibles fósiles, siempre me alegro cuando puedo hacer mi propio fuego con leña. Otro punto a favor fue el alojamiento en nuestro propio huerto ecológico, donde podíamos servirnos libremente. Aunque las verduras estaban recién maduras, cocinamos varias veces una gran sartén de brócoli, coles de Bruselas y otras verduras de hoja.
