Tradition and beauty in the village of Guayos

Hello, friends. A few days ago I had the opportunity to visit Guayos, a charming little town in the municipality of Cabaiguán.

Guayos is that kind of place that during the day is quiet, but during the night it transforms into a place with a lot of activity, with some colonial and early republican constructions it is crossed by the central highway. This small town, like many others in Cuba, was formed around an old sugar mill that, although it was dismantled more than 10 years ago, still leaves its mark with the railroad line that crosses the side of the town.

The curious thing is that, despite its apparent tranquility, Guayos is known for being a super party place. Here the biggest parrandas of the province, known as the Changüíes de Guayo, take place, in an encounter that every year confronts in a friendly and festive way two opposing neighborhoods, La Loma and Cantarrana. A whole week of celebration where the carrosas, congas and fireworks are the undisputed protagonists. A cultural phenomenon that has transcended time, since it was first performed in 1925.

Unfortunately, I arrived a little late to fully enjoy the parrandas, as they are celebrated in December. Walking through the streets, you can see some carts still half disassembled.

Undoubtedly, this is one of those places worth visiting, either for its rich history, its charming architecture or the promise of a party that will surely leave a mark in the memories of those who attend.

If you have the opportunity to visit this place, do it. But I definitely recommend that you do it during the Changüíes. It will be a unique experience, and I mean it.
