Hello again! I recently shared with you my experience in the Managed Floristic Reserve: Lomas de Fomento, a natural paradise in the Cuban Escambray. In that first article, I focused on the amazing variety of flora I found during my visit. However, today I want to take you by the hand through the mysterious trails of this reserve and enter the fascinating world of its fauna.

As we ascended the majestic "Piedra Gorda" mountain, the diversity of flora left us in awe, but it was also impossible not to notice the captivating sounds of the animal life around us. On more than one occasion, our guide pointed out the presence of endemic birds, whose songs filled the air with unique melodies. Unfortunately, the focus of the first article did not allow us to delve deeper into the wildlife treasures this reserve has to offer, but now is the time to do so.

The Reserve is home to an amazing biodiversity of animal species that have found their safe home here. The insect kingdom is a world to be discovered in this reserve. On this occasion we were able to appreciate an immense diversity of butterflies since the low use of insecticide has increased their diversity. Crickets hide in the leaf litter. It is here that we also found scorpions, common creatures in this area, but whose relevance goes beyond their appearance. In medicine, their venom is of inestimable value, as it is used to treat certain cancerous diseases. The interaction between these small creatures is essential to maintain the balance of the ecosystem, and the reserve is witness to this dance of life in its purest state.

¡Hola de nuevo! Hace poco compartí con ustedes mi experiencia en la Reserva Florística Manejada: Lomas de Fomento, un paraíso natural en el Escambray Cubano. En ese primer artículo, me centré en la asombrosa variedad de flora que encontré durante mi visita. Sin embargo, hoy deseo llevarlos de la mano a través de los misteriosos senderos de esta reserva y adentrarnos en el mundo fascinante de su fauna.

Mientras ascendíamos por la majestuosa montaña "Piedra Gorda", la diversidad de flora nos dejó maravillados, pero también fue imposible no notar los sonidos cautivadores de la vida animal que nos rodeaba. En más de una ocasión, nuestro guía señaló la presencia de aves endémicas, cuyos cantos llenaban el aire con melodías únicas. Lamentablemente, el enfoque del primer artículo no nos permitió profundizar en los tesoros de fauna que esta reserva tiene para ofrecer, pero ahora es el momento de hacerlo.

La Reserva alberga una biodiversidad asombrosa de especies animales que han encontrado aquí su hogar seguro. El reino de los insectos es un mundo por descubrir en esta reserva. En esta ocasión pudimos apreciar una inmensa diversidad de mariposas ya que la poca utilización de insecticida ha hecho que aumente su diversidad. Los grillos se esconden entre la hojarasca. Es aquí donde también se encuentran alacranes, criaturas comunes en esta zona, pero cuya relevancia va más allá de su aspecto. En la medicina, su veneno posee un valor inestimable, ya que se utiliza para tratar ciertas enfermedades cancerosas. La interacción entre estos pequeños seres es esencial para mantener el equilibrio del ecosistema, y la reserva es testigo de esta danza de la vida en su estado más puro.

Among the mammals, it is possible to find deer in the wild. Unfortunately, during my visit I did not have the opportunity to see any of these elusive animals, since there are very few specimens in Cuba, which makes them even more special and difficult to find. However, I was able to delight myself with one of the two species of jutia present, the monkey and the jutia conga, the latter being the largest mammal endemic to Cuba. Its presence in this natural environment is a reminder of the importance of protecting and conserving this rich diversity of life.

But that's not all; bird lovers will find their paradise in this reserve. From the splendid tocororo, Cuba's national bird with its distinctive red, blue and white plumage, to the zunzún (bee hummingbird), whose diminutive size and swift flight make it a winged jewel that is a spectacle to behold. I would have loved to capture every instant with my cell phone, but unfortunately, the zoom did not do justice to the majesty of the hutias and the tocororo.

Entre los mamíferos, es posible encontrar al venado en su estado salvaje. Lamentablemente, durante mi visita no tuve la oportunidad de avistar alguno de estos escurridizos animales, ya que existen muy pocos ejemplares en Cuba, lo que los hace aún más especiales y difíciles de encontrar. Sin embargo, pude deleitarme con una de las dos especies de jutia presentes, la mona y la jutia conga, siendo esta última el mamífero más grande endémico de Cuba. Su presencia en este entorno natural es un recordatorio de la importancia de proteger y conservar esta rica diversidad de vida.

Pero eso no es todo; los amantes de las aves encontrarán su paraíso en esta reserva. Desde el espléndido tocororo, el ave nacional de Cuba con su distintivo plumaje rojo, azul y blanco, hasta el zunzún (colibrí abeja), cuyo tamaño diminuto y vuelo rápido lo convierten en una joya alada que es todo un espectáculo para observar. Me habría encantado capturar cada instante con mi celular, pero lamentablemente, el zoom no hizo justicia a la majestuosidad de las jutías y el tocororo.

Let's talk now about the impressive diversity of reptiles. There are several species of endemic lizards and, occasionally, some non-venomous snakes can be spotted. Cuba has been blessed by nature, and here, wildlife lives in harmony. There are no poisonous animals to threaten our exploration, giving us the freedom to fully enjoy this magical environment.

My visit to the Managed Floristic Reserve: Lomas de Fomento was unparalleled, captivating me with its flora and fauna. This sanctuary of life in the Cuban Escambray left an indelible mark on me, reminding me of the importance of valuing and protecting our natural wealth. Hablemos ahora de la impresionante diversidad de reptiles. Habitan varias especies de lagartijas endémicas y, ocasionalmente, se pueden avistar algunas serpientes no venenosas. Cuba ha sido bendecida por la naturaleza, y aquí, la vida silvestre vive en armonía. No existen animales venenosos que amenacen nuestra exploración, lo que nos brinda la libertad de disfrutar plenamente de este entorno mágico.
