A good second installment of Crescent City "House of Sky and Breath"
💕 Hello Hive Community! 💕

With this author's books I've learned that, ultimately, second parts are always better than the first. Last week I told you that I had started Sarah J. Mass's new saga, Crescent City. Which is part of this author's multiverse, whose stories encompass fairies, shapeshifters, magic, romance and lots and lots of action. In the last review I told you that the ending was quite catastrophic, with an intense battle and many secrets revealed, especially by our protagonist, Bryce Quinlan. In this new installment we continue to dismantle more secrets and the future war approaches.

The first chapter of this book is extremely confusing, it is the typical "trust the process", because it is not narrated by a known character or never mentioned before and makes sense much later. We are introduced to Sofie Renast, a Vanir with a very strange lightning power who is persecuted and killed for being a rebel. After these events, the life of our protagonists will change, since the threads of destiny make them get involved with the rebel cause, although they did not want to draw the attention of the Asteris. And we couldn't miss the secrets of Danika Fendyr, a character that doesn't stop fucking even in death, I think she's definitely not one of my favorites because she destabilizes the story a lot, even though she died at the beginning of the first book, she was involved in many things that make Bryce end up doing crazy things for answers.

And while our protagonists had reconciled at the end of the previous book, in this one they wanted to make things right and give themselves some time of peace, to get to know each other and then formalize their relationship on the winter solstice. But for Bryce and Hunt things don't look good, as Bryce's father, the fairy king, decides to officially give her your last name, make her a princess and marry her off to another Fairy prince, which doesn't go down too well with anyone. And Cormac, the fae prince, turned out to be not just another stuck-up guy, but belonged to the rebels, so to avoid getting married, he and Bryce decided to form an alliance, which their closest friends also supported. I actually like Hunt and Bryce's relationship, it's cute, they complement each other and it's quite fun to read. Bryce is not my favorite female character, but I don't hate him, I think he's good, out of 5 stars I could give him 3. And Hunt, he has almost everything I like in a grey moral protagonist, but he lacks something, still I can give him 4 stars and that makes me like him a lot.

I couldn't just tell you about Bryce and Hunt, because there are so many characters to talk about. Ruhn, Bryce's brother, and his romance with Lidia Cervos, or better known as La Cierva, when he didn't know who she was, the prominence he had in this book made me feel like he was a main protagonist. Declan and Flynn, his friends, also had special parts, although I feel they are wild card friends, as they help only to solve problems, but we still don't get to see a backstory. Ithan the werewolf, brother of Connor who would be Bryce's almost boyfriend when the pack of devils existed, Tharion the sea man, I don't remember his species, and Hypaxia the witch queen, half sister of La Cierva. We also have certain antagonists like "the Hind", the Crone and Pollux, who, while not too great in power, are there to make things more complicated. And there are too many plots that, if I were to opine on them all, would be more than the 700 pages this book is 700 pages long.

I feel there are many things to explore about our "secondary" protagonists and their plots, but the main thing here is the rebellion against the Asteri, who proved to be the real villains who have the whole world at their mercy. And on a mission to infiltrate their territories, Bryce, Hunt, Ruhn and Braxian (another Malakat) are trapped by the Asteri. But Bryce using the horn, travels between worlds, aiming to go to Avernus, but ending up in another Faes world, one with winged men, a world called Phytian. And God only knows how MUCH I screamed when I realized that Bryce had landed on the world of ACOTAR, in the territories of the inner circle of the night court, with Rhysand welcoming him. That moment was epic, so much so that I left screenshots in the images for you. I really enjoyed this book, as much as the first one, but if I must admit that the first ending was better, this one only comes close because of Rhys's line. Sarah J. Mass has a beautiful way of writing, she makes you get into a world that is too complex, but when you understand it you enjoy it to the fullest. I'm a huge fan and hope she continues to put out amazing stories. See you soon!

I found your analysis of the secondary characters and how they feel they deserve more exploration and prominence very interesting. Sometimes it's tempting to focus only on the main protagonists, but a really rich story is usually full of characters and subplots that add richness to the whole. your enthusiastic review has convinced me even more that I should delve into this fascinating world created by Sarah J. Maas.
